My mom lives in an assisted living facility, and she is 84, and she was talking about the nice "elderly" gentleman who moved in on her floor...he's about 87 I think...and HE'S elderly!

just sweet and about as stereotypical a 'little old lady' as one might wish for...with some notable exceptions!
She stays pretty aware of current issues, and although she totally disagrees with the Repubs on most issues, (she has qualms about abortion, but knows it has to remain legal) she tries really hard to avoid cynicism and negativity (so I have to watch my tongue, I tend to RANT!!)

But yeah, she's great - wish she lived a little closer.

I know plenty of people in that age group who I would say are in their late youth and plenty who are early middle aged. I haven't met many who I would consider old. I equate old with elderly. But I can remember a time when anyone past 18 was old; I was about 9 then.

number. I think more of it in terms of attitude. My mother-in-law was seemed oldat 60 - the age she was when I met her - because she had such a shitty attitude. My Dad is 74 and in not so good health but has a very young attitude and seems much younger than my MIL ever did.

A couple of ladies I knew were traveling internationally in their 80's and they died at 100 and 101, their health had declined drastically in their last few years. But they never talked about being old to me, just reminiscing about the past and looking forward to that next adventure. That is the way I want to go. I don't want to look as it being old it's chalking up years of experience.

When I was a little kid, teenagers seemed old (i.e. "grown-up").

When I was a teenager, people who were just out of college and settling down to career and family seemed old.

By the time I got to twenty...well, you know, you can't trust anyone over thirty.

When I hit that point myself, it seemed that people in their thirties were still "young people," and middle-age didn't really begin until one was forty.

When I turned forty, I felt I remained on the older edge of young, but it wouldn't be until fifty that there really was "no going back."

Now, it seems like sixty is the threshold of "senior citizen" status.

The funny thing is, though, that I've known, as I was growing up, many people who were the age I am now. I always remember them as mature, stable, well-set in their ways and their place in the world. People with no doubts about who they were nor questions about where they were going. Why is it, then, that I don't feel the same, now that I'm their age? I get the feeling that, even when/if I turn eighty, I'll still feel like an out-of-place teen inside.
