1. I'd go with malware. Or just start doing your own EPROMS.

3. Once you go Slack, you never go back.
My brother is trying Ubuntu. It's alright, although there are things I don't like about it. There is no root password: you must use sudo for everything that requires administrator privileges.

As far as I am concerned, Slackware is still the distribution that sucks least. It installs a sensible selection of software, especially if you're used to Unix at work, and has simpleminded package management that never tells you "you can't do that."

5. If you're building a server, stick with Slack!
Where I work, I saw one of the guys installing SuSE for a server. KDE desktop and everything. What the fuck do you need X running on a fileserver for? Clueless.

7. Ubuntu seems to be all about the desktop
They're about including NVidia and ATI's proprietary drivers in the distro, and the Beryl desktop thing with the OpenGL X server.

9. Disabling root is a very reasonable thing to do!
That's why Ubuntu installs that way. Even if you are using slack, it's a good idea to disable root.

I got used to it quickly once I started doing it routinely.

Looking around a bit, I found this advice:

10. Meh, I'm not bothered about what someone can do if they had physical access to my machine
It's a given that everything is there for the taking. Hell, all they need is a livecd to access everything. So long as it's secure enough against online attackers is good enough for me.

8. I started with Debian years ago.
It felt the most "right" to me.

The machine I'm writing this on is Ubuntu, which for the most part is Debian/Gnome. It's a shared machine, so I use Ubuntu because it's much less intimidating to my family than the sorts of machines I set up strictly for my own use.

My kids use Windows XP on their machines, with the understanding that they have to maintain them on their own, but they've got to have their iTunes and games, so I think I understand... Also, that sort of conformity is a kind of rebellion in our house. They know I loathe Windows.
