In her place, a halfway decent singer stays!! The nudie, Antonella, left tonight though! So there is some hope I suppose!

My daughter watches it, but busy with homework tonight.

She can't believe Sabrina was voted off either. She wants to know who else?

17. No, Simon is the only honest one who's willing to fight our culture of mediocrity
I mean, yeah, he's part of the system by being with American Idol, which is a celebration of fakery and mediocrity - but even within that system, Simon at least has some integrity and is willing to stand up for at least some modicum of artistry.

21. These people supposedly want to be professional artists - if they can't take it,
Edited on Thu Mar-08-07 10:24 PM by Rabrrrrrr
then they don't deserve it.

Unfortunately, in America's mediocrity-addicted society, being a pop star (engineered and commodified by corporations, with far more value placed on breasts and/or sideburns and clothing than on actual artistic talent) is seeing as being a "professional", instead of a ludicrous self-parody designed to make money for its owners.

Also, unfortunately in America's mediocrity-addicted society, and one which celebrates poor performance with kudos, trophies, and stars in order that the person isn't made to "feel bad" for performing poorly, we have the problem in which "awesome" or "excellent" or "unique" isn't good enough; it's all been dumbed down so that it has to be "really truly unique" and "super bitchin' awesome". And in the same vein, that which would earn a grade of "D" is now "wonderful", and the kids whose soccer team came in 28th place in a league o 29 still get trophies and awards of merit, and so someone shows up on American Idol who can't sing for shit, Simon tells the person they cn't sing for shit, Paula says "Maybe could have been better, but you did well, you tried, you look good" and America goes home and hates Simon, when they should be hating Paula (and themselves) for accepting shit as A-level work.

25. Nobody says A-level to those who cant sing on American Idol
Even Randy has been saying "Dude, it wasnt that good for me".

What is wrong with saying " Maybe could have been better, but you did well, you tried, you look good" ? Paula doesnt say "that was great", to someone who sucked, but she still doesnt feel the need to make them feel like a total fool.

I dont know, maybe I am just too concerned with feelings. We all have them, we dont want them trampled all over.

I have had to fire people many times in the past years, and I always manage to point out their strong points during their exit interview (as it were), so they could build on that, even when I had to point out the things that really sucked about them.

Maybe I am just too darn sensitive for the whole American Idol thing.

27. Sure they do - the whole fucking thing is geared to give a contract
to a C-level "performer". They aren't singers - these are people who are seen as being marketable.

They'll fix pitches and intonation and other singing problems in the studio, and in concert they'll sing with a tape that the sound guy will punch in whenever the singer starts going off key.

The whole problem with "Maybe could have been better, but you did well, you tried, you look good" is that it supports mediocrity. It doesn't say "Wow - you need about 1000 hours more practice before you're ready; either practice more or give it up".

Just like giving trophies to ALL the kids in the soccer league so that no one's fucking feelings get hurt.

Bullshit.

And a lot of those people who get creamed by Simon on the show DESERVED it. If their friends and families hadn't been addicted to mediocrity, they would never have been telling the jackoffs that they sing just fine; they would have spoken the truth. And if the friends and family HAD been telling the jackoffs that they suck, but the jackoff refused to listen, then they need to hear the truth from a professional as well.

I'm amazed at the number of people who are clearly inept, totally and utterly incapable of singing (even beyond the average American Idol's contestant inability to sing) who are told they suck on the show, during the auditions, but who counter back with "Well, my family doesn't think so!" or tell the American Idol judges that they don't know what the hell they are talking about. WHile agree that they often don't know what the hell they are talking, if even those three clueless fucking bozos think that a singer sucks, then rest assured - that singer sucks.

Fuck feelings when people are clearly inept and living a lie because they're willing to accept C- and D- level performance as "really awesome!" or "totally unique!"

29. There are 3 different judges for reasons.
Randy usually says what he feels. Simon puts it out there in a way that seems ugly but we all understand and have thought. Paula wants to make up for it by bringing out the positives.

But, I don't think we have a C-level performer. We have people desparate to get noticed and this is their ticket. And in all fairness, it takes a lot to actually get where these people got. Kelly Clarkson isn't a C-level performer, IMO. Now she was the 1st season (which was still trial and she was by far the only one with talent), but I think everyone in the beginning of their careers is willing to do what it takes.

But still, the point is that Simon is almost always on target as ugly as it sounds. That is the "real world" of the entertainment industry, and that is what these kids would here in the real setting!

30. Compare them to real singers, though, and they are C-level.
Edited on Thu Mar-08-07 11:13 PM by Rabrrrrrr
I've not heard any of them that could hold a candle even to some of the students I've heard at Julliard and Manhattan School of Music and Columbia and the Eastman School, to say nothing of true professional, trained singers.

And American Idol jackoffs aren't even looking to be singers, they're looking to be performers.

19. What do you expect when teeny-boppers vote 10 times for other people's 1 vote
My wife who loathes the show has watched a few minutes here and there as a bonding moment.

She nailed it when she attributed teen-age girls for the reason Sundance went home and the other guy held on. I basically thought also that the other guy picked a contemporary hit that appeals more to the majority audience than Pearl Jam's Jeremy did.

24. I initially gave VFTW some credit for keeping the thugish Scot Savol alive a couple of years back
but when you think of it, who's really more motivated to vote multiple times?

Someone who just wants to fuck with the system or the fan who really wants to see their favorite singer advance through the next round?

As much as some contestants are freaking jokes, I just can't see dropping more cash than one call's worth of money just to advance some joker who is notably inferior to other contestants.

I thought Sanjaya and Haley would be the other two to go.... NOT Sabrina (who I liked) and Sundance (who I didn't, but he could sing at least).

I wonder if that "vote for the worst" crowd influenced the vote very much? Makes no sense otherwise.

26. Sundance's poor choice of song is what kicked him off.
"Jeremy" is a good song but it is not right for American Idol. It doesn't showcase vocal talents, it doesn't rhyme, and it doesn't have a traditionally catchy chorus. The average American Idol viewer is just going to tune it out. He should have known better.

That being said, I don't think he would have went very far in the finals anyway.

Sabrina was better than some of the others, but it's not like it made a difference - she wasn't gonna win.

Same for Sundance - the ONLY guy with any hope of getting far is Blake.

But it's all Melinda and Lakisha, and maybe a surprise from Gina. But I suspect there will be no men in the top 3.

Two out of three weeks, at least.

I'm not saying he's a bad singer, but he made bad decisions that cost him, and he lost out to Mowgli and all his teenybopper power callers. Sundance should have stuck with what brought him to the dance.

Still, now that theme weeks are coming up, he would've been doomed anyway. Can you say "ABBA week?"

45. A problem is the few good singers split the votes of people
Edited on Fri Mar-09-07 01:11 PM by soleft
who actually vote for good singers.

Certain "types" of singers attact a certain "type" of voter. Some people like the Divas, some people like the boy band wannabees, some people like the beefy guys who can really sing. IMO Chris Sligh took votes that Sundance would have had. That's who he lost to, not Sanjaya. The girl who got booted who could sing was a diva type and her competition was Lakisha and Melinda. Out of those three she was bound to lose.

Then there are people who always vote for worst contestent. The competition was between Sanjaya and Barba, obviously Sanjaya is a bigger freak, and that's why he's still on.

It will be interesting to see who gets booted first, Melinda, or Lakisha. Who ever loses will get the others vote and then will be very hard to beat. Same goes for Blake and the other boy band type.

But we will definitely lose a few more good singers before the freaks go. Unfortunately but that's how it always goes.
