1. Ha!
It's punk in Jesus' name, of course!!

Seems kinda silly doesn't it?

I actually stumbled across some on a radio station out in Western NC once. It was quite odd.

2. Put "christian" in front of any type of music:
That's code for "It sucks".

Of course the term punk has been abused since its inception and no one can really agree on what it means.

What a concept...

I suppose there's some Christian Gangsta Rap out there, too.

10. I have yet to understand punk, so I have no hope of understanding Christian punk.
Honestly, I like my music to sound like angry robots either winding down or angry robots rioting.

13. Consult the gospel of Lester Bangs
If you really don't understand its appeal then pick up one of his books. Seriously, the man was a great writer and he's occasionally credited with coining the phrase so he can explain its appeal.

His book Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung is one of the most dog-earred books in my collection. Or you could be lazy and watch Philip Seymour Hoffman's portrayal of him in Almost Famous.

11. At its best, it embraces the radical, peaceful messages of Christ.
At its worst, it's jingoistic death metal for those who can't play guitar.

20. Don't know anything about it
I do know that the entire Christian Rock thing is huge -- generating big money, too.
There are a couple bands that have crossed over that I have listened to. Over the Rhine and Jars of Clay come to mind -- they aren't punk, though.

On a different note. I ordered the first Brandi Carlile CD, and it arrived today. I am just listening through it for the first time and I love it already. It usually takes a couple plays for me to hook into a new CD -- not this one. She is phenomenal. Thanks so much for the heads up. I've already pre-ordered her new release.

25 minutes 'til 'Lost'!!!!
:bounce:

21. Is that the Story CD, or another one.
I want to pre-order The Story, but I'm moving in a few weeks, so I'm gonna wait. God, I love her. They play her on a radio staion out of Port Charlotte every day. She's one of the best I've heard in a long time. I am so glad you like her.

22. This was her break out self titled
Edited on Wed Mar-07-07 09:59 PM by GenDem
New one comes out first week in April. If you look on Amazon she scores a perfect 5 star rating with 83 comments for her first album -- that's unheard of. But, after hearing it, there honestly is not one song that I don't really love. So very powerful.

I'm now into my second play. Her music is so unique and she goes into that really cool raspy twang that sounds so emotionally charged. I can't thank you enough for turning me on to her. I love her!!!!

She is influenced by Patsy Cline and Jeff Buckley and I can hear those artists in her body of work, yet she is no copycat.

2 minutes to 'Lost'.

:hi:

29. An oxymoron?
Christianity = establishment (not always, but religions are in general)
Punk = antiestablishment (in theory, at least)

40. Tooth & Nail Records
They specialize in Christian-themed bands that fall way outside the CCM milieu. I think MxPx is on their label.
