Philly writer blasts Brett Favre, family
http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/news/local/7658631.htm

I've a biased view of course, but goofing on a guys wife and sister and dead father seems classless to me.

6. So you agree his wife his fair game then?
What of her pain?

Can you say Steve Bartman? This guy Russell should take responsibilty for the rout.

I'm sure Philly fans, if you look at their family histories, are pure as the driven snow. Sainthood factory they have up there.

11. I don't think...
it is a "serious" piece. It's a parody of the kind of behavior--I hope--we see surrounding professional athletes. What sports fan could POSSIBLY care taht Favre farts a lot? One who doesn't fart a lot himself?

It's a demythologizing of the mythologized: a way of using the press about Favre and the Pack as a "team of destiny" and "watched over by an angel" to show how putrid and sick those mythologies, as such, are.

15. Ummm.
I agree that some demythologizing of sports figures is always in order. However, the fart bit doesn't make up for the much of the rest of the piece, which lists some rather serious parts of the man's (and his family's) life. Sorry, but there is too much here that is far too serious to say that it wasn't written to bite much harder than necessary.

3. That is LOW. Trash.
After reading that, I just went from not neutral, not particularly disliking either team, to rooting for the Pack this weekend. My dad hates all the Philly teams with a passion. I'm beginning to see why. I hope the Favre family sues that guy for slander.

that's the kind of thing that could lead to violence in the stands. Somebody could get hurt because of this kind of hate mongering.

As much as I love my pack.it's only a frigging game for crissakes! there's no need for this kind of crap!

I've been cruising the philly boards. I havent seen any thing this vitriolic. In fact at one site, 700level, they are excoriating this guy, Russell.

ON EDIT, the irony is the writer claims Philly web fans are the source. I'd like to think they've more class than this.

it's obvious to ME that he is just being playful in his writing. Perhaps sports doesn't allow readers to see irony. Or perhaps it's not terribly funny. Either way, he's a silly reporter...and you're taking it too seriously.

14. Hahaha. Hey if it wasn't true......
it wouldn't be written. Every week the Daily News does this with our opponent. This is pretty tame compared to what we do to Dallas and New York. A little advice, if you are coming to our house this weekend do NOT wear your cheesehead and keep quiet and you might make it out alive. Cling to your little fantasy about "angels" while you can, it all ends Sunday.

60. I do. I love football. I love having my family over on Sundays...like
we've done ever since I was a baby. I love the banter and the shouting and the booing. I love the hugs and high fives I get from my Dad whenever they score. I love that the Packers have a valid chance to win it all once more in his lifetime. I love discussing each little minute detail of a play. I love getting little Brett Favre jersey shaped beer bottle holders in my stocking at Christmas. I love it. I don't have a lot in my life...Football is a way for me to get together with family. It was something in my house on that Sunday when Mr. Poole caught that ball that catapulted my beloved team into the playoffs.

this is why I love football. It's also why I don't knock other people's interests.

Hugs,Laura

62. You don't have to pay attention to this part of it.
I usually don't. It entertained me for tonight, however. Guess I needed a distraction. Wanted to get goofy. Whatever. But there's nothing wrong with spectator sports. They are a form of community for those who enjoy them. The same for those I chat with at the theatre, movie house, concert hall, pub, art museum, bookstore, reading etc... Alas, many of those who provide the "action" in those activities are also overpaid. But what can one do?

69. That's a bit tasteless
Overkill and unfuny, if it was trying to be funny.

71. I never have like Favre...
never will. He's the most overrated QB in the NFL.

All I need to say is this: Go Philly! Beat the Packer's ass into the ground!

77. How can you call someone who holds as many records as he does
overrated? I'm just interested in hearing your reasoning? I have no problem with people not liking him. Heck my father, a lifelong Packer fan doesn't think much of his character. (my father's hard to please and still misses gentleman Bart) I must say, your use of the word overrated is puzzling.

Care to elaborate?

Laura

72. I have a biased view the other way, but I agree with you
This goes beyond the normal trash talking I've heard. Again, it doesn't represent how most in Philly feel.

74. I have a lot of class
And deeds by fans in other cities are ignored when they are just as bad. The media likes to make people remember the Philly stuff for some reason.

75. I hear you
I think this writer is using Philly fans in the worst way. From the feedback I've been cruising, the majority disagree with the personal attacks contained within this article.

Lets play some football!
