33. What is even sadder is that
she is probably doing a lot better than most of the people in her neighborhood, and is possibly the breadwinner of her family, even if she still lives with her parents and has no kids.

6. One time when in Nogales with my son (age 13 at the time)
Edited on Wed Feb-21-07 04:30 PM by Whoa_Nelly
and we were leaving to walk back across the border, a little girl, no more than 2-3 years old, came up to him trying to get him to buy some little 2-piece Chiclets packs for 25-cents each. My son said no thank you to her, and then put the only money he had on him into her little money cup, a total of about $8, and then gently patted her on her head. Then, he turned to me with tears in his eyes and asked me, "Why, Mom? It shouldn't be this bad. She's too little."

Yes...it is heartbreaking, GoPsUx.

14. Indeed I am :-)
He's a wonderful father of two.
My son is fluent in Spanish, and is determined that his children be also. He also is raising them as I did him: It's not your race/cultural heritage that's important. It's the quality of who you are as a person that counts.

Little Grand-Nelly and little Grand-Whoa!

since you can't go back at this point, my advice is to drink more tequila. You'll feel better.

People here are dirt poor.
Their currency is less accepted in their country then american dollars.
I would just say to you
And smack me still if you wish.
But don't judge a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes..

21. Yes, I know all that.
Do you realize that your "all-inclusive" resort (what does that mean anyway) exploits these poor people, so that people like you can have incredibly cheap vacations they cannot get in the United States?

So i guess i shouldn't have came here and tipped many locals close to a weeks wage so i could vacation in florida.
I'm sorry but i don't get your logic.
I doubt Nancy Pelosi would either.
I'm off now to exploit more locals :sarcasm:

40. fwiw, I didn't say he was a bad guy.
Truly, I was just responding to the thread with my honest reaction. I'll concede that my reaction might have come from my own experience of being hit on by drunk men thinking they're doing me a favor, and by seeing drunk men hit on other women, thinking they are doing them a favor.

Peace.

36. Sorry, but I don't understand.
You've been seeing me being tacky? Can you tell me where? Was it when I wasn't offended by a thread that contained a poll about famous homosexuals? Or was it where I was offended by a homophobic thread claiming that gay people were vile, where I defended against it? Or where? I'm not keen on vague innuendo like "I've been seeing it for a long time."

In this case, I simply reacted to what I thought was offensive. A drunk man in a posh resort giving money to someone, then coming here to brag about it. It's the way I read it, and the way I responded. Please point out ANYTHING I've posted here that shows some sort of pattern that you are insinuating.

22. it is difficult to see, buzzed or no.
you're a nice guy, GoPsUx - and if you can empathize with people and/or other creatures, life can be very difficult sometimes, but you probably wouldn't want it any other way.

I hate it when - in this country (or anywhere, really, but I have seen it often here) - I see an elderly woman waiting tables, or an elderly man bussing tables or mopping the goddamn floor. Perhaps it's by choice (right), or perhaps its just because they can't afford to live otherwise. I guess I just see my mother or father or grandmother struggling in these unknown (to me) faces and it makes me so damn mad.

35. Aw. You did good.
That kind of stuff gets me, too. I've been to Mexico a few times, and I always have an internal dialogue in my head about feeling guilty vs. well, at least I'm getting some $$ into their local economy.

I remember the first time I went down there. I was on a Spring Break trip in college. We all got on a local bus, and I suddenly saw this group of priviledged, drunken, obnoxious American kids through the eyes of the hardworking locals just trying to get home to their families and I wanted to disappear ...

Later I remember bargaining on the beach for some piece of jewelry and I suddenly realized I was bickering over a dollar. What was a dollar to me? Sheesh.

The whole experience makes you re-evaluate things.
