Is DU a drug for you???
Like that you can't go a day without it. That you use it as a substitute for friends in RL? Yes we are all real persons but mainly talk online with strange usernames.

1. I haven't missed a day since I signed up.
I may not post every day, but I do read. Drug? No. Addiction? Yes.

12. I think that is a wonderful testament
to the people of DU. I hope I make some real friends here that translate into RL. I'm on the path, I think. I just find that there aren't many people on DU that I wouldn't want to be friends with because they are such good hearted people.

2. Yup
I'm very much a "people person," but since I started working from home, I have very few friends in this town anymore, and none I especially want to hang out with.

It's pretty pathetic, I guess, but like 90 percent of my social life is on the internets.

9. About six months ago I went without the internet for a few months..
Not a huge deal. I just ended up getting good at PHP and math. And I spent way to much at the local bar.

11. YES.
..and I do not apologize.
You all have been a great gift in my life and I think it is a wonderful thing.
If it ever becomes an impediment to my RL I will back away; but right now it's not.

15. I use DU but not as a drug Miss H
I know it appears that I spend a bit of time in the lounge but...

I use DU as my primary news source...(C-Span is on my TV as background, sometimes it is CNN news...I am never sure what is propaganda there though). Truthout and Media Matters are my other sources for news and editorials but not as often as DU.

I am beyond sick because of what my government has done to the world and especially to Iraq and Afghanistan. In my view we have become like your country was just before WWII in many ways.

I know of no better thing to do at this point in order to help mend what has been done than to post here in DU, primarily GD and GD Politics. I spread the news as I can. I share my perspectives and especially I fight or debate with my fellow DUers about impeaching that nigger bush. (First time in my life I have used that word DELIBERATELY...he is the only person i have EVER known who deserves it)

One good thing though, I have met some damn fine people here in the DU, especially here in the lounge...you of course are one of them Miss H, You have a big advantage over my other fellow DUers in that you are German and live in Germany. You already know how much I miss your country and it's people and it's food and...well pretty much everything there...

So no, DU is not a drug for me like something one can become addicted to. For me DU is a place to become enlightened. Becoming educated is a duty for each voter in my opinion. Democracy REQUIRES an enlightened electorate! I use my computer as a weapon, as in: The Pen is Mightier Than the Sword. I may not be very good with it but quite frankly I do not know what else to do. In the end I hope in my own small way I make a difference.

I posted something I read earlier from an Iraqi citizen here the lounge...pardon me if I don't feel like my usual snarky self. I hope it gets read by all my fellow American DUers...in a way it is my version of leading them under a gate which says: "Arbeit Macht Frei" for a tiny look.

I hope that my fellow americans are nearing a tipping point, one where WE THE PEOPLE force this issue of impeachment. I believe that when enough outrage is out there it will happen. I hope that what I do here helps to push America to and past that tipping point. If you look around here, you will see that there are quite a few folks here in DU who are here for those exact reasons. They may not put it the same way as I have but I suspect if they thought about it they would agree with me.

Don't let me mislead you, I also strongly enjoy the destraction of the lounge for its fun and to share snark and I really do love idle chat too. I would like you to understand that for many DUers, myself included, there is another reason for being here as well.
c

16. Addiction, no... drug, perhaps.

It certainly has been an anodyne to the pain I feel being an American...

Especially since 2001, but, really, for most of my adult life (I'll be 58 in June), I've been ashamed to be an American. Yes, we've always been quick with help in disasters (I'm sure the people in the Indian Ocean Basin appreciated the mercy flights after the Christmas Tsunami) but I've long felt that our aid carries with it a stain of "look what WE are doing for you" paternalism which I find offensive in the extreme (can only imagine how much more so the people who receive our aid must feel), as well as the implied obligation our "help" has so often carried...

"Charity" with "strings attached"... not the way this ex-altar boy was taught!

Far too often I find myself listening to the Improper-ganda which passes for news, seeing the heartless greed and lust for power so endemic in my homeland, and find myself re-thinking my enraged responses to bin Laden's "there are no innocent Americans" diatribe, and just wanting the whole thing to end... indeed, dreaming (hoping?) that the more virulent fundies are right about the immanence of the Holy Cleansing Fire... and hoping my babies go quickly and painlessly.

And then I think of Priyanka, who, almost a year ago (18Mar, right?) came in and crowed over her newly-earned Citizenship...

I think of SeattleGirl, and Rev Cheesecake (oops, sorry, Rev CheeseHEAD, memories of a certain Tall Women contest crept in for a moment  ) and u4ic and California Peggy and Grey Warrior... of Billy Skank and LeftyMom and...

(and please forgive my blatant gynophilia... I'm in recovery, but it's a long slow painful process.)

I think of RadFemFL and Miss Honey, who have blessed and honored me with out-of-lounge converse...

Most of all, I think of my beloved AlienGirl who brought me here some years ago, and who stood by me through some very painful days a year ago...

... and I am reminded that there are too damned many good people, too damned many trusted comrades-in-arms RIGHT HERE(!) for me to give up hope.

This place is painkiller, antidepressant and euphoriant... my soul, my heart, need this place. If that is addiction, then DAMN 12-Step programs, I don't want to, and I shan't, give it up!
