3. the island of the ladies
It is called that because back when mexico was at war with Spain? (I think thats what i was told)The locals hid thier women and children here to keep them from being killed.
the ocean view is amazing (the bathrooms are scary)
They actually charge tourist 10 cents a square for toilet paper here.
Not to be gross but It was so nasty i didn't bother washing my hands after i relieved myself because I believed I was cleaner than anything in the restroom water and soap included.

15. In Mexico you always need to carry your own paper!
Some Purell hand sanitizer also is needed to keep the germs off the hands!

2. I've never used pesos in Mexico.
Even when I was a kid going shopping in Neuvo Laredo-dollars only.
But I've only seen the "not so nice" parts of Mexico (border towns). Yeah, it's really depressing. Never been to the interior.

6. One of my companies works with the silversmiths in Tasxo?
I'm sure I spelled that wrong! In any case, they have always paid them in dollars. Fair trade and all that. I find it hard to wrap my mind around such desperate poverty. God damn corrupt and greedy governments!

10. The silver from there is everywhere down here
You can get it dirt cheap. But you have to negotiate the prices down.
It is common knowledge to never pay whats asked for anything down here.

20. I don't get it
Why would their preference for US money show that our society was unjust?

People in underdeveloped countries the world over prefer hard currency to the local stuff-- that's just how it is. And even in a highly developed country like Singapore, the locals seem to prefer Japanese yen to the local Singapore dollar.

19. We went back into the jungle
Saw many people living in palapas. I took down some supplies for the library in Akumal and was invited to visit the school. We were told the government doesn't do much to push education and does nothing to help the idigenous people. The Mayan guide we had at Sian Kaan was telling us how they got more help from US agencies to set up their service than from the Mexican govt.
If we want to make a contribution to a group that is trying to help consider this library http://hekabbe.com/

22. We went to Mexico during Xmas and it was very depressing.. The government
has built a toll road from the Cabo San Lucas airport to the resort area, so most

American tourists never see the "seedy" side of Mexico. This lovely toll road takes celebrities and well-heeled

tourists directly to the well groomed resorts. But we hailed a cab and the

driver insisted on taking the "old road".. boy was that an eye opener. Abject poverty

abounds.. the people live in glorified dog houses. We were agahst!! Then after a

couple of days exploring the town, we came to realize that a couple of VERY wealthy families control EVERYTHING in Cabo. The

hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, everything and they travel around in armor plated SUV with machine gun toting guards.

Unfortunately for us here in the States, I guess we'd better get used to it because this is where the U.S. is heading. BushCo and the cronies and coporatists

are close to total control of our precious country and we're maybe only 20 years out from what we saw in the

back country of Mexico. The uber-haves and the rest of us.
