THE OFFICIAL BOSTON DU GATHERING THREAD
Where: Starting at 2pm at the People's Republik on Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square:

880 Massachusetts Ave.
Cambridge, Massachusetts, 02138
United States
phone: (617) 492-8632

When: August 16, 2003

Who is coming: Anyone who damn well wants to who can get to Cambridge

Places to stay: Check this link -

http://www.hotels-guaranteed.com/Massachusetts/Cambridge/210787.htm

Let me get a sound-off on who is interested in this. I will try to get the admins to post this on the main page.

I am not Lynnesin, so make no mistake - this is NOT going to be some extravaganza with food and prizes and whatnot. This is Boston. We are going to sit and drink and talk and play darts until we fall down. Period. I have no room at Chez Pitt for guests unfortunately, so don't ask.

If this sounds attractive, say 'Aye.'

24. When I was 21, it was called the HI-LO LOUNGE
...I lived next door and could crawl home every night from the Plough & Stars down on the corner.
Strictly O'Doul's these days, but I can't wait to meet The Man Who Wrote the Bible! :bounce: :toast:

Do you remember Jacks?

God I miss Cambridge.

Remember the Inn Square Men's Bar?

There were also some scary townie bars in Inman Square: the Shamrock and the Abbey Lounge (which now books punk bands).

88. Absolutely!
The Zircon on Beacon St in Somerville. The Speakeasy I had to think about for a minute. Norfolk St off Mass Av, right? I didn't go there much because I wasn't into 'da blooz' so much yet. What did I know?
Here's one to see if your REALLY a geezer. Locate for me, please, the Charity Ward.

Seriously. The walls are festooned with old Soviet propaganda posters. They have a full-sized mockup of the Fat Man nuclear bomb on a shelf above the windows...no one messes with the People's Republik because they have the Bomb.

The crowd is hip, all ages, neo-beatnik Cambridge types. Good times.

75. will anyone still be around at about 6:00 or so?
just found out that a friend is having a bbq this sat. at 1:00, and I missed it last year b/c I was out of town (got the guilt trip yesterday for even suggesting that I may miss the "big event" two years in a row)... so, can be around later, but not earlier (it's in gloucester). Will people still be there around 6:00?

81. You have to walk, I think toward Harvard Square, but
I'd feel better if someone else confirms this because I'm not 100% sure.

84. Walk West on Mass Ave toward Harvard Sq
Peoples Republik is on the left. You'll see Cambridge city hall on the opposite side of the street.

86. That's right near my shrink's office.
Wonder why I never noticed it when I went to his office? (I know I've seen it from my car and the bus, but I couldn't remember just where it was.)

87. I am coming down from Maine. I am waaaay up here now,
an hour sorta north of Bangor. Friday nite I am going to see DJ Irene from LA spin til the wee hours in Orono with friends from Bar Harbor, then I will attempt to get to Cambridge from Bar Harbor as close to 2pm as possible the following day. I will be a bit raggedy but I will be there..hopefully everyone will still around at 4pm or 5pm if I dont make it there by exactly 2....:hi:

90. Cool! Glad you're going to make it.
You can get to Boston/Cambridge easily from Bangor. I took a bus from Boston to Bangor last year when I went to visit my cousin in Bar Harbor. Fortunately, we got a ride home, and that was much easier.

92. There is a MUCH CHEAPER garage in Central Square!!!
Don't park in Harvard Square-it's a rip off. In Central Square there is a garage on Green Street that's much cheaper and closer to the People's Republik. It's on Green Street, which runs parallel to Mass Ave. If you're coming from the Mass Pike, go right on Mass Ave toward Boston and it's the first right on Pearl Street after the lights at the cross walk. I think a photo place is on the corner. Then you take a right on Green Street after the stop sign and it's on your left.

I will be coming down on 95, route 1, then 93, then I assume Storrow Drive. I never go to Boston from Maine so I am not 100% certain..I will research and figure out how to get there. Thanks for the info and hope to see you there, RationalRose!! :hi:

95. Just a few blocks from Speaker Thomas P (Tip) O'Neill's house
Good location, the home of Speaker O'Neill is just around the corner. One block off of Massachusetts Ave at RUSSELL St. The Speaker was a great Democrat who stood up against the Regan REVOLUTION. Where are the leaders of his type when we need them. Who will fill his shoes to fight this Bushit revolution.

96. I'd say it's a lot more than a few blocks from there.
His home is in North Cambridge, a couple of long subway stops away. He was my US Rep for a long time.

97. look at where people are traveling from
The Speaker is the BIGGEST name ever in politics from Cambridge and one of the all time great politicians. He cared for people and all that is important to many here on the boards.

Look at where people are coming from before you judge where around the corner is. Two miles is not that far if you are coming from Arlington, but many are coming from much further away than that.

Since you know all things Cambridge, you know that the beautiful poem that Speaker O'Neill's son Tom recited at his funeral was "Around the Corner"

98. No need to get snippy about it.
I know people are traveling from far and wide. I just didn't want them to think the place was practically next door, so they could step out of the bar and check it out. When I hear the phrase "around the corner," I think of something you can walk to in a couple of minutes. Maybe that's just me, I don't know. Whatever.

105. North Cambridge is more than a few miles from Central Square
it is the other, less convenient side of Cambridge. If people are coming from highways, they may get lost. The local traffic is always a challenge in Cambridge, and there are a lot of one-way streets. No need to get hostile, jflooney-notmyprez was trying to help so out-of-towners wouldn't get confused.

People's Republik is closer to Central Square and city hall. If anyone needs specific directions, feel free to PM me.

RR
