1. Exploded bag of coffee.

I don't know the date as the bag exploded and coffee beans went everywhere but generally a bag of Starbucks coffee won't explode until it's at least 3 or 4 years past expiration. I'm not dead, i didn't even get ill, it tasted nasty though.

2. That is one thing I can't do. If it is set to expire tomorrow, I will not eat it.

3. Grated parmesan cheese

It officially expired about two years before I ate it, but it actually tasted better than "fresh" grated Parmesan.

4. Most packaged dried food is pretty shelf stable

It might lose its freshness, but being dry and in a sealed package under normal home storage conditions assure that it won't be filled with any more bacteria than were there when it was originally packaged.
A couple weeks ago, I had a hanburger helper that expired 2 years ago. I didn't tell my husband , but he commented that it seemed blander than usual.

8. Cake mixes

The only thing you need to know is that your cake isn't going to rise very well unless you add some additional baking soda. It's the one ingredient which "dies" over a period of time.

If it's something like au gratin or scalloped potatoes, with dried out potatoes, they're pretty safe, too. Usually, however, it's the high amount of salt which will kill you in real time.

lots of things in the freezer - they say you should throw them out after x-months - the hell with that!

12. I have heard that in the 1950's Antarctic explorers ate food left behind by

the Scott party - many of whom died - at the beginning of the century.

I have eaten desicated muskrat liver stored under a mud mound by the original California gold rush explorers in the nineteenth century, explorers who, as it were, were trapped in blizzards, driven insane by months of white out conditions, and who were not necessarily intent on using FDA approved food storage safety procedures.

I was mighty bad eating but I have to confess, I palliated the desperate condition of this food inasmuch as I sauteed it with delicous wild scallions and fresh dog jaw, beaver lungs, and soft boiled foot pads of bear and deep fried fresh whole chipmunk.
