Mom cat adopts rejected Rottweiler pup By STEPHEN SINGER, Associated Press Writer
Wed Feb 14, 11:10 PM ET

Who says cats and dogs don't get along? Workers at the Meriden Humane Society are marveling at a short-haired mother cat who has willingly adopted a six-day-old Rottweiler puppy that was rejected by its mother.

The tiny pup, named Charlie by Humane Society volunteers, nurses alongside a jumble of black and gray kittens recently born to Satin, who was surrendered to the shelter by an owner unable to care for her.

Charlie's mother was found by the side of the road in Meriden a couple of months ago. She gave birth to two puppies, but one was stillborn. As sometimes happens with a stillborn in the litter, the mother dog refused to accept Charlie.

Volunteers bottle-fed him every two hours, but the effort was both exhausting to humans and insufficient for the puppy, who needs to feed when he wants, said volunteer Chris Chorney.

Research indicated that a suitable substitute could be Satin, who had given birth to four kittens that have quickly warmed to Charlie.

"The kittens scrum up with him and the kittens treat him like one of their own," Chorney said. "There's a certain social benefit of small animals being with each other."

6. I once had a cat named Satin
two of my human female friends at the time were named Velvet (really) and Terri (think terry cloth). So, when I finally enticed the stray up the long metal back staircase, I decided she needed a fabric name, too. And what could be more natural for a black cat (mine had white socks) than Satin, one letter off from Satan?

Turned out my Satin was pregnant, too. Alas, she'd spent too much time on the street; first she kept moving the kitties around the house (right next to the doorbell turned out not to be such a good move!), then they started dying. :( Hmmm... that was 16 years ago; maybe she came back and wound up in Meriden! I did, after all, grow up in Conn....

9. thank God, all the animals were rescued
so they can all be properly spayed and neutered and sent to loving homes. My doggies and kitties absolutely adore each other.

10. Awwww
I love how mothers of different species will sometimes (often?) do that for babies that so obviously are not theirs.

Love love love...

14. I live in CT and this has been in the news
a lot this week. They are asking for anyone who has a Rottweiler mom who just gave birth to nurse the dog. They said the puppy needs to be socialized with dogs in the first 8 weeks of life and that this is very important. The story is awfully cute though.
