Poll question: Pictures in sig lines
Some of the pictures in the sig lines are getting entirely too big in my humble opinion. What's your take?

5. None of the above
I took advantage of the option to turn off signatures a long time ago. They were quite a distraction, and I don't need 'em. So they don't bother me one way or the other.

7. There are already guidelines in place
"Please try to include no more than one graphic in your signature line at any time. That graphic should be in either .jpg or .gif format, and should not exceed 500 pixels wide, 200 pixels tall, or 10 kilobytes."

http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/rules.html#signature

You should alert on any that are too large.

8. Rules: not increase the text size
You may change the color and font of your signature line text, but we would prefer that you not increase the text size.
Thanks for finding the rule page in question for us. "Prefer" is certainly a mild term and inexact. What is prohibited, then?

Lots of folks, of course, try to skirt the rules by not putting
the picture intotheir sig but, instead, pasting the link into
the body of every one of their postings.

This violates the spirit of the rule and also violates the
wishes of DU members who have turned off signature display.

I believe these postings should be alerted as well.

Edited on Wed Jan-07-04 12:10 PM by Melinda
It's 5 kilobytes bytes, and 200 wide and 75 pixels tall. The guidelines state pics are allowed that do not exceed:

"500 pixels wide, 200 pixels tall, or 10 kilobytes."

But I'll consider making it smaller.

I was always hesitant to post graphics because I didn't want to cause other people problems. But since you can turn off the sig, if your connection is really slow, maybe you should. Or just ban graphics altogether, then, if nothing is small enough. But if we do it within the rules, why not?

Although I admit, mine kinda pushes the limit (about 500x200).

But I've gotten a huge positive response for it.

I may try to reduce the resolution later with IrfanView.

Under 12kb by all means. If I make them too small they lose quality. And, well... I like them, I made them. ;) I never indulged myself like this before, hehe. You can turn off the sig line if it's really slowing you down, too.

27. That was my point about people who simply paste in the URL.
There are a set of folks here on DU who skirt the rule by putting
explicit links to their pictures in each and every posting and
not putting the pic link in their sig.

You CAN'T turn off these poeple's non-sig-sig pictures without
disabling all pictures by all posters.

Maybe we should have a more strict rule about non-sig graphics and try to educate everyone on their ability to turn off sigs, as well as the rules about them as they are now.

> Maybe we should have a more strict rule about non-sig graphics

I think Skinner said as much the other day (at least
in regards to non-sig sig images), but when I looked
in ATA, I couldn't find it just now.

In any case, I think it's worth alerting on obvious
non-sig sig images, especially if they violate the
filesize and/or image size constraints, especially
if they violate them by A LOT.

29. Width isn't a big problem. Height is. They can be wide, but not tall
Horizontal space is under utilized here. It's the vertical space that needs to be conserved. This is not a graphics- or memory heavy site. I like that about DU. But the picture files that all really tall don't do anything for me. A limit of 80 pixels in height would be good manners in my opinion

31. Mine's only 12K total...
I've been contacted by the mods previously about another sig graphic, so now I'm very careful about my graphics size. I had another graphic that caused another DUer to have seizures (it had a strobe effect and they PM'd me and asked me to change it - I, of course, did change it).

is put them on ignore. I miss the benefit of their opinion but I am sure tired of having someones picture shoved in my face several times in a thread. Also, the reason I put this in GD2004 is that is where I run into this problem

Edit: left out a point

when we would post a reply, the html code (for our sigs) used to be at the bottom of the reply window, so we could remove our sigs if we wanted to. We can't do it anymore, or I'd remove my sig on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc posts within the same thread...
