Anyone ever been to Great Basin National Park?
I saw an article in the paper about it this weekend, and it looked great - towering mountains, bristlecone pine forests, huge caves and a distinct lack of visitors, which sounds right up my alley.

Any input welcome - thanks! ;-)

1. One of my coworkers worked there as a plant biologist
He worked for the federal government doing tree surveys in many western locations. He was urging me to make a detour there while I was vacationing in Utah. The mountains are tall enough to get above the treeline and into alpine tundra, I understand.

Have you tried www.nps.gov ?

2. Take the Lehman Caves tour
The full version. Highly recommended. Often a waiting list on summer weekends.

If you go hiking, beware -- this is mondo rattlesnake country. But it's certainly not crowded.

Also, buy your goodies and gas long before you get there -- there's nothing except one small town for miles and miles in any direction. And the closest malls are clear back at I-15 way up in Provo.

3. Only the very outskirts of it during the winter when most of the park was
closed.

However, I would recommend it just because it is such a contrast to the desert landscape that surrounds it--the park seems to come out of nowhere.

4. Many times.

Damn darkest nights, and a hell of a long way from anywhere.

One of my favorite parks.

5. Sounds like my kind of place!
The only question is whether to first go there, or to Theodore Roosevelt National Park - another contender for the "least crowded" crown.
