2. I don't know
WTF is going on.

I think they are all dead and in Purgatory, having to work out issues they had in their lives. Or not. Who knows anymore?

Love the show, but it stopped making sense ages ago.

40. That scene was right out of the Matrix - she's the Oracle
Offering the chestnut was like the Oracle offering NEO a cookie, or even more so in Matrix II - when they sit on a park bench just like the park bench in last night's Lost and she offers him candy.

The actress was also in the Others with Nicole Kidman - she was pretty creepy in that too.

Edited on Thu Feb-15-07 12:18 AM by GenDem
Just wondering when he will be checking out. I like his character. What about the storm in the flashback (on the street while C was singing Wonderwall) and the revelation at the very end about the lightening strike? Connection, or not?

The writers pull from a lot of literature and pop culture. It's difficult to keep up with all the hints and subliminal messages that they throw out.

I'll be watching closer tomorrow.

31. I am so clueless
missed that reference completely (although I got the Henry Gale one immediately, back then)

I was doing a cross-word during the commercials, and got caught up in it, and S.O. said "put that down! You're missing stuff! How can you not watch this?" (you know women and multi-tasking).

39. There's a couple more Wizard of Oz connections
When Desmond falls off the ladder and bumps his head and suffers from a concussion -- similar to Dorothy hitting her head during the tornado -- which resulted in her trip to Oz. Isn't that when all of the deja vu/time travel stuff started with him?

I will be watching it again tonight with Mr Gen and Young Gen

42. Interesting
I don't think they are just creating a pop-culture hodgepodge with these references. The Wizard of Oz was all about discovering one's potential and that seems to be a thread in Lost. But you probably already figured that out. I'm generally "late to the party" on these matters. ;-)

23. Possibly "Jumped the Shark'
There are already more than enough mysteries, characters with issues, moments of supernatural eeney-meeney chili beanie stuff....I'm just not sure we needed tonight's developments.

I watched the extras on the season two DVD and learned that the plot is really written week to week. And I've heard that the writers and producers read the "Lost" forums and sometimes change the show to fit popular sentiments (like which characters to kill off).

I like the show, but since it's very expensive to produce and losing viewership, I'd like to see them work on explaining what we've already seen. It would be awful if they kept introducing new twists and then the show was cancelled with no resolution, or a hastily conceived one.

24. There was an item recently
where the writers stated that they are coming up with an exit strategy for the show. I think they realize the jig is up. I'm thinking one or two more seasons, tops. Tonight was an excellent episode, though. I was just about tired of the Kate/Jack/Sawyer trinity nonsense.

46. It's not so much that "the jig is up"...
I heard them mention The X-Files in an interview (while discussing the fact that they're devising the exit strategy so to speak) saying that it would have been better had it ended a few seasons earlier, because there's only so much you can stretch a storyline. I think they realized this from the start.

32. I used to participate in a Buffy forum years ago on Salon
when the internets were relatively new (!), and two of the writers used to post sometimes. They also used to monitor and post on "The Bronze", which was the official forum. They would sometimes write shout-outs into the shows - not so much to specific posters, but to topics that had been bubbling up in the forums.

It's interesting -- writers no longer write in a vacuum; for better or worse, they now have places where they can get immediate feedback from the fan base.

29. Meh,
not too terribly impressed with this one. I flipped between this and Top Design because it couldn't keep my interest (though I loved seeing at least a little bit of Hurley, he's one of my favs). I got the overwhelming feeling that they were trying really hard to be all spooky, and mysterious and shit with this one, and I hate when I get that feeling, like they are trying too hard. Also, I think it would have been much more effective if the Desmond flashback had been about 1/2 the show as opposed to 90% of it. Hopefully the rest of the season doesn't play out the same, the first episode back was really good. I liked the Juliette backstory (and it didn't take the whole hour to do it!!).

They've raised some very interesting philosophical issues about time, and destiny and the importance of finding one's path in the whole scheme of things. Nonetheless, an odd episode to show on Valentine's Day of all days.

43. Bingo. My thoughts exactly
I know alot of people didn't like it.
I went to work today and 7 out of 8 watchers told me they thought it was boring.
I soooooooo disagreed!! The destiny/fate/kismet question is a big one.
Clearly all of the people on the island were meant to be there to fulfill some sort of destiny.

There WERE some things I had questions about.

For instance...

1. What was the signifigance of the color red? Claire wearing a red tank top (and pants to go swimming?!?!?! this seems odd), the label of the Whiskey was red, Desmonds red paint (With the can that read FUTU and the rest of the letters were obscured by red paint. The theory is that the can said FUTURE. Where can I get me some future paint?) and finally The man with the red shoes. Red seemed to be there for a reason.

2. How about that lady in the jewelry shop??? Will we see her again?

3. The painting in Widmores office. Not the one with the polar bear & the word namaste written backwards.. the one behind Desmonds head.

the same painting as in Claire's apartment that her boyfriend painted- is Claire's ex-boyfriend more important than we think??

Claire's apartment: look in the background-

http://gallery.lost-media.com/displayimage.php?album=237&pos=102

Mr.Widmore's office:

http://gallery.lost-media.com/displayimage.php?album=1250&pos=340

According to the producers alot was seen in last nights episode that would not be interpreted straight away as important- but will develop into something much bigger later.

Who knows with this show! Most Wednesdays I think it is just around to make me dumber.

47. Here's a wild-ass theory I just came up with
Edited on Fri Feb-16-07 09:01 AM by nuxvomica
What if the Dharma Initiative is an experiment in communal dreaming, the purpose being to acquire knowledge that would be unattainable otherwise. That would explain why the characters' lives are so haphazardly intertwined and there is so much symbolism with pop culture references. Some of the people who die are leaving the experiment on a certain schedule and you can't change the schedule. ;-) Other people die because they are just characters in the dream. The data entry is some means of keeping the experiment going and even if it's negelected, there's a failsafe, which Desmond used. It's no news to anyone that many of the elements of the story are very dreamlike: the polar bear, the smokey monster, what's-his-name's ability to walk, Hurley's girlfriend. The Others and the jewelry-store woman are sort of dream proctors, people employed to make sure things go smoothly. The Wizard of Oz was a dream, after all.

edit: maybe it's not an experiment. Maybe it's a form of therapy, like for drug addiction, depression, etc.

37. This was a very existential episode.
It reminds me of "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosencrantz_&_Guildenstern_Are_Dead

The play concerns the misadventures and musings of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two minor characters from William Shakespeare's Hamlet who are friends of the Prince, focusing on their actions while the events of Hamlet occur as background. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is structured as the inverse of Hamlet; the title characters are the leads, not minor players, and Hamlet himself has only a small part. The duo appears on stage here when they are off-stage in Shakespeare's play, with the exception of a few short scenes in which the dramatic events of both plays coincide. In Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are used by the king in an attempt to find out about Hamlet's motives and to plot against him. Hamlet, however, mocks them derisively and outwits them, so that they, rather than he, are killed in the end. Thus from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern's perspective, the action in Hamlet does not make much sense.

The two characters, brought into being within the puzzling universe of the play, by an act of the playwright's creation, and those they encounter, often confuse their names, as they have interchangeable yet periodically unique identities. They are portrayed as two clowns or fools in a world that is beyond their understanding; they cannot identify any reliable feature or the significance in words or events. Their own memories are not reliable or complete and they misunderstand each other as they stumble through philosophical arguments while not realizing the implications to themselves. They often state deep philosophical truths during their nonsensical ramblings, however they depart from these ideas as quickly as they come to them. At times one appears to be more enlightened than the other; however this position is traded off throughout the course of the drama.

45. Mind-blowing episode!!! Just absolutely fantastic.
My brains were sizzling from all the frying.

The scene in the jewelry store just left me a stuttering, stammering speechless mess. Still trying to wrap my brain around it! And the final scene too - wow! The spoilers were all pointing to Charlie, but I just was having a hard time believing it. I hope it doesn't happen.

I totally missed all the Wizard of Oz references until someone pointed them out - d'oh! I guess I was too busy trying to figure out all the other mind-blowing stuff to notice.

Very cool episode. I absolutely love LOST! :loveya: :loveya: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
