16. I nominate this, because the band was formed for the song...
"Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" was a song written and recorded by Gary DeCarlo, Dale Frashuer, and Paul Leka; attributed to a then fictitious band "Steam," it was released under the Mercury subsidiary label Fontana. It became the number one pop single on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1969. Although subsequent recordings and a quickly assembled touring band Steam met with little success, "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" remains a perennial favorite.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=dZBRTDuWH1c

I believe that the video clip above actually uses the original studio recording for the audio, because you hear more instruments than you see being played.

49. The original is still fun to listen to
I listen to the 60's on XM a lot. What I hate is the way hockey fans like to sing it when the visiting team is losing during the playoffs. It's gotten so hackneyed that way.

Say, may I ask why you have the pic of Peyto Lake?

50. Kyu Sakamoto was NOT a 1-hit wonder in Japan
Edited on Wed Feb-14-07 05:09 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
"Sukiyaki" was not the actual title of the song. It was just that a DJ who had somehow gotten a hold of a copy of the japanese release played it on the radio and called it "Sukiyaki," which was about the only Japanese word most Americans knew at the time (1963).

When I was a student in Japan in the late 1970s, Sakamoto was on TV variety shows all the time.

Sadly, he was one of the victims of the August 1985 mountainside crash of a Japan Airlines plane that killed 495 people traveling between Tokyo and Osaka.

The song is actually called "Ue o Muite" or "Looking Upward."

"I will walk looking upward so that my tears do not spill. I remember spring days, nights all alone..."
