Well, apparently the Mr. and I screwed up.
TeenMidlo went on her Confirmation retreat this weekend and we had to write letters telling her how much we loved her, how proud we are of her, etc.

Last night she tells me that now that she knows how we really feel, she is going to blackmail us with the letters.

Wonder what she thinks we thought of her before the letters.

1. Hahahahahahahaha!

It must be a retreat program they have to follow...we had to do that with WannaBe.

I put goofy notes in her lunch all the time, just to make her smile.

The last one was "Clean your room"... ;)

2. It could be worse.
My mom only tells me how much she loves me when she's drunk. Unfortunately, she doesn't drink often.

I do commend her on blackmailing you. Every child should blackmail their parents at least once.

8. Yes. She's making her Confirmation this year.
It's one of the sacraments of the Catholic Church.

11. That is great Midlo...question....
When your 7 y/o calls bs on bible stories - what did you say? Little MB goes to Catholic School and will be doing first Communion in May. She told me yesterday, in a very squirmy way, that she doesn't really believe the stories they tell her at school. I told her it was okay to question - that is what learning is all about. Any other suggestions?

13. Catholics don't believe in the Fundamental literalism of the Bible
So, she doesn't have to believe the stories necessarily happened. Which ones doesn't she believe?

(I used to be a CCD teacher.)

15. She's on the fence on the Moses parting the Red Sea
and all the plagues. I told her that there are unexplainable things that happen all the time, and that people tend to attribute those sorts of things to religion. She was content with that answer.

18. Nah, it's okay if she doesn't believe that's the literal truth
Jesus rising form the dead? Yeah. Moses and the locusts, et al? No.

21. I know, and you should handle it how you think's best
Just for when she gets even older and more analytical -- she sounds like a smart kid, and as she gets older, she'll probably need to know that it's okay to not believe the OT stories. Hey, I WAS that kid, I understand.

Good luck!

16. As far as the OT goes, I always told the kids that it was
a story rather than the exact truth.

NT, I told them it was pretty much the truth. David and Goliath stuff, I said it was more of a metaphor. So far, so good.

Our church focuses very heavily on social justice and the corporal works of mercy, things near and dear to me.

Her communion class is doing several social justice programs as part of the prep. I was very pleased to hear that. One of the projects they are working on is this...

14. Hard to believe but apparently. And, she would tell me.
She's a hollow tube. I know which of her friends have had sex, drink, smoke pot.
Makes for some very interesting conversations.

Although when she declines to go somewhere because stuff is going to happen, the other kids' parents push for a reason why she didn't go. Gets a bit sticky at times.

20. At what age do they get Confirmed these days?
Back in the late 60s/early 70s, we did it in 7th or 8th grade (I think they only did it every other year in our parish, since my sister and I got Confirmed at the same time - she was in 7th, I was in 8th)

I hope these are older kids you're talking about or are 7th-8th graders really doing that much bad stuff these days??? Yikes.
