Calling any KC DUers
I am flying in and out tomorrow for a site inspection. I land about 10 and my return flight is at 5. I should finish (I guestimate) by 1:30 or 2 so I have a couple of hours to kill. I have never been in KC but will be doing the same thing once a month for the next few months.

What sites can I see in a whirlwind tour that I should not miss??

Can anyone recommend a decent pub to kill a couple of hours and sample the local cusine?

Anyone want to meet for a cold one??

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!!

1. Arthur Bryants Barbeque
Trust me, it is the best. Try the burnt ends. President Carter and Clinton both loved it. One of those old places in the old part of town, but perfectly safe. Half the police force eats lunch there.

4. I envy you all.
Up north, I got nothing. Are you going to ferry this DUer? They need just a little more time to sample this fine town, and all its culinary offerings. Bryant's, yes. B.B's Lawnside Barbeque. Hayward's is good, Martin City Smokestack is fancy but the beans are great! Elastic is the answer. 18th and Vine for yer culture. The Phoenix...man I am out of the groovy scene. If the traveler is around much, they will find some things they like here.

Happy KC time for you!

6. My site visit is near I-435 and East front street
But my flight out of KC Int'l. is at 5 so I had better be damn close to Alamo by 3:30. Thanks for the interest though.

14. I have lunch at 1130
And I work at the Musician's Friend Distribution Center. Its on the west side of 435, just north of Front Street.

Great discounts!

Do you play any instruments?

15. Not me,
But I just dropped 8 bills for a flute for my daughter, new on ebay. OUCH!!

Double ouch, my client, from here in Chicago, is visiting the site tomorrow as well. He'll be expecting me about 11 on site. Probably not best to meet him, on his dime, at 12:30/1 with bbq sauce on my moustache. Learning what I have from you great KC DUers I ought to be out of the area headed for KCI by 3/3:30.

Next time I will have more advanced notice, let's see if we can set something up, lunch on me.

16. Instruments???
My daughter is 1st chair in 8th grade flute, despite still playing a beginner's flute. I just dropped $800 on an Armstrong 80B, new on ebay for her combined b-day/xmas gift (new years eve baby).

Do you carry intermediate flutes and could I have done any better?? Even if not much better I'd prefer giving the biz to a DUer.

17. We don't have any at the store there
But we would online. You wouldn't exactly be giving the business to a DUer though, its a pretty big company.

The company is an online music store. We have a store on front street, but all we sell there is returns, mostly guitars and basses.

8. I even messed up my edit.
I meant to say, eat much barbeque, wear elastic. Plan a nap. And I think landing at KCI makes it difficult to run through this town.

9. I was just thinking that
About KCI that is (barbeque too). I was looking on mapquest to find my way to the site from the airport and was dumbfounded as to why my etickets say KC International but on the map it is KC municipal. Even my cheap little Rand McNally atlas only showed the two ports adjacent to the river in the city.

Then I googled KCI and found that it is WAY out there and my commute was off the map. IKES!! How long a drive is it from KCI to say downtown??

11. Anyone else have encouraging words?
My unscientific estimate (how's that for hedging bets?) is in good traffic, 30 minutes; more to get to the east side or south. You just need to have some more time and some good KC hosts. But, hey, there are a couple of good dives on Front Street. I just can't remember the names (because they asked me to leave).

3. Whirlwind Tour
Edited on Tue Jan-06-04 07:58 PM by TheDeb
There's the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the Jazz Museum at 18th Street & Vine. You'd have to check for tour times, though. BTW, Arthur Bryant's is about 6 blocks east of Vine on 18th Street.

I don't know where you're coming from but be sure to dress warmly - it's been really cold here since Saturday.

KC will seem like Miami. I will be back in town periodically and on subsequent visits I expect to have maybe an entire afternoon to explore. I thank all for the input!!

on edit: Welcome to DU!!
