12. It really bothers me, too.
First, why the fuck do you care if it bothers someone a little more than another celebrity death might? What an odd thing to ask.

Here's why, for me: She was very beautiful (and successful as a result of that), but also very innocent in many ways. She was exploited and ridiculed her entire adult life, and by all accounts was tremendously unhappy. That she then suffered the loss of her son only made her life that much more tragic. A tragic life with little happiness ended by an untimely death is deeply sad to me. And much more sad than, say, Frankie Layne dying of old age.

30. I DID give you a serious answer.
And as I said, your question seemed odd to me (and not terribly respectful), hence my initial "wtf." I make no apologies for that, and am in no need of "settling the fuck down."

If I just wanted to hit you with attitude, I wouldn't have bothered giving you a serious answer.

I didn't realize that precluded my feeling sad about the tragic death of a young woman. I'll know better next time.

59. Okay. But I won't be sharing that grief with you.
She lived her life to be in the limelight, which is what I found sad. Really seemed tawdry and shallow. And the press love that, because it draws people's attention from the things the press report badly about.

Lots of young women will have died today. I'm afraid I'm more sad for those whose names I don't know.

i met her a couple years ago at my favorite haunt in West Hollywood - she was tending bar for charity. It was gay pride weekend. She was awesome, truly. I am infuriated by many of the responses in GD...it's disgusting, truly. But as we've learned in recent days, homophobia is not too uncommon on DU.

105. But today isn't their day. Nor are they important. Anna reigns supreme.
Don't worry, the way the media operates she'll be forgotten in a week. Though given how the media is using her in death as they were in life, what's truly changed? Nothing. Who needs television anymore to entertain us?

After all, regarding other media darlings, James Brown is forgotten and Mike Evans, who did far more for advancing real social causes than Anna or James, was barely mentioned as a blip on the far side of the radar screen. Quite probably because Mike Evans was a decent guy who couldn't get into a tabloid trash article if he tried!

103. Hollywood and the media... they are the biggest sleaze, by far.
For all the talk of Anna, one way or the other, Hollywood is the sleaziest of them all. Period. Incontrovertible.

The media loves to find something, anything, and make a circus out of it. And then dump the act the second it becomes unprofitable.

But the proverbial circus performers are not victims either. The tabloid trash media loves to stalk celebrities or even the questionable just for a story they think might sell. Sensationalist garbage. And thanks to all the tabloid trash, who the fuck knows where the truth re: Anna's life was? Unless she flaunted the parts of it the media would cling most to, and even the naive have to admit the media means big bucks. And the media will spin things when reality becomes inconvenient. Just ask the makers of the "bio-pic" "A Beautiful Mind". Can't have reality when that might reduce the audience viewing figures...

See why it's easier to stay out of something? It becomes way too easy to become one-sided, jaded, and in some posts outright vicious. From either point of view and there are times when the wishy-washy, oops I mean those who want to find the middle and the truth, are better to stay out.

Maybe her sons are the real filth.

Maybe the old guy she loved was filth.

Maybe she's filth.

Who the fuck knows?

At this point, as much as I loathe to say it, who the fuck cares anymore? Her life was trashed long ago BY the media that all sorts of societal problems are being overlooked. And we can only hope she didn't encourage the media along the way. That's like OJ Simpson selling a book telling us how he killed Ron and Nicole, if he really did do it despite not bothering to fulfill his promise of looking for 'the real killers'... oops, too late. No doubt he'll have a lot of people mourning him too. When his day comes, I can only be apathetic. The hard worker down the street, living the straight life, trying to do good for his family and dying due to overstress will still be ignored for some poodle dancing for his media friends.

But, as I said before, she died way too young and that's THE most tragic aspect of all this.

And no doubt I'll get fried for my Charles Manson comment by his fan base too... :eyes:

47. didn't she just have a baby, as well?
now this little one is gonna grow up without a mom. It bothers me because she is from a working class background. I always related to that for some reason. It also bothers me because she was portrayed as so mercenary for marrying J. Howard for his money, as if he didn't marry her for her youth. It think it was a business exchange, and yet she was the only one that was tainted by it. So strange the way that works.

or I could just do this, much as I don't particularly like this smiley: :eyes:

'Showing her stuff' is what she did a for a living. She did it for fun, too. She was a wild girl, in many ways. The only thing I know for sure is that you have no right, really, to judge her.

And, yes, she probably did enjoy that fame thing. Even though it probably did her more harm than anything else.

It sounds like you think she should've done the whole sackcloth and ashes thing, or worn a burkha, or maybe undergone female circumcision to cast out from her the evil urges to sexily strut and pose....

I repeat: :eyes:

41. It seemed there was no one to help her
After watching a few episodes of her reality TV show, I had to turn it off. I felt so sad for her. It seemed that she had been told all her life that she was nothing but a body, with no one encouraging her to develop her mind. She needed help and protection to learn how to stand on her own--which she never got. There never seemed to be anyone around her who genuinely cared about her other than her son. She was surrounded by pirahanas, all trying to make their buck. She didn't have friends, she had employees, her son and a dog.

It seems in this final act, she may have followed in the footsteps of Marilyn Monroe, who image Anna Nicole Smith's pictures often copied. Near the end of her life, Marilyn started taking acting lessons, and was showing promise as a real actress, not just a body and a breathy voice. But her addictions wiped that out. Who knows what Anna could have become if given time and the right mentors? And what will become of her little girl?

I'm guessing she would have had a community in her small hometown, but she gave that up to become a "star". Still, as an adult, she was responsible for caring for herself, or creating a community around her. It's what the rest of us are expected to do.

Most sweet, niave, uneducated people end up getting shit on for their entire lives, going from one bad situation to another, being taken advantage of, and they either die (be it natural, suicide, or murder) or become hardened and bitter, losing every bit of their sweetness and naivete by being ground under the bootheel of life.

107. So what about the soldiers in Iraq that we "aren't paying attention to"
Nobody forced them to join the army. They joined it..they knew what they were getting into. Most of them did nothing of importance (fighting a war in Iraq is the epitomy of useless).

Why the fuck should we care about them?

Answer: Because we are human beings with sympathy for people who have made bad decisions, and who have suffered. Well..most of us, anyways.

Had a reality show that was startlingly embarassing and hard to watch
Married a BILLIONAIRE and had to fight his kids all the way to the Supreme Court

24. I am not surprised she died.
If you have ever seen her in interviews and that dumb reality TV show she had, her speech was slurred and she just looked she was not all there. She was definately on something or some things. In fact, I am a part of a deadpool group and I put her name in the deadpool. Geez! What a bullseye that was!

All and all, it is sad. I feel sorry for her baby daughter.

39. I wonder how she died.
Now that she's gone, her daughter would likely take everything as her sole lineal heir. (unless she had a valid will). Her daughter's guardian could likely still seek whatever share of Howard Marshall's estate that Anna Nicole Smith was entitled to, with the daughter stepping into Anna Nicole's shoes.

If the Stern is the father, he controls that potential money. If the other guy is the father, then he controls what happens.

112. Neither will DUers who think she can do no wrong and blame everyone else...
And not say anything to help justify Anna's purported purity. They can say "Love --- blah blah blah" in a pithy way but they say nothing of substance. That doesn't add to their argument.

Either way, she died too young and unlike some people deserved to live. And my gripe is that the media never pays attention to the most noble people of them all... because it's not sensationalist enough. The media loves a slinging mud fight.

They'd love DU right now too.

From people on both sides.

There is no middle.

Mountains of tabloid trash prove that...

Maybe the Libertarian filth have a point; just stay out of things and live for one's own gain?

And that leads to a question I sure as hell refuse to ask... it's fairly obvious anyway.

98. What's her 'damned son' all about?
It's obvious I've not kept up with the whole story... so I did a quick search:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=anna+nicole+smith+gold+digger+son&btnG=Google+Search

So much tabloid "news" that I honestly don't know WHERE to look to find anything one way or another. Even of the time when the debate over whether it was love or 'gold digging' occurred. It makes finding something of value, then or now, nearly impossible, so I'm just going to stay out of this issue entirely, but refrain from taking sides - one way or the other.

She died way too young and that's the most tragic aspect of them all. She died. Too young. It's tragic. So is the fact she got more tabloid attention than real attention. That alone adds a negative stigma. But she, like most of us, deserved a full life. Charles Manson, on the other hand, should have died at 38 as far as I'm concerned; I don't care much for murderers...

And I solemnly promise to stay out of the eventual "Britney Spears has died" threads that will doubtlessly bloom like so many fields of goldenrod that induce hayfever when she croaks... I dunno if Anna was genuine with her desires and maybe she was, but Brit is all too obvious and with each passing day it becomes increasingly clear what she is... and it'd be all too easy to make extremely snide comments about her, now or ultimately.

You've been sincere in your response (as are the others). You've made me think about my own beliefs. Maybe that's why you did bother responding, even if I'm not ready to utterly believe her relationship was honest. In the end, it's none of my business, her personal life, and people will say what they will. It's up to others to change peoples' minds or take sides and do the dance they cajole you to do.

Please consider that.

We aren't good for anything else but our bodies right? Just a set of warm wet holes for men to enjoy and the only way we can succeed is to marry some man with money. I mean really. If this ex-boyfriend turns out to be her daughters father, I hope Howard K Stern doesn't fight for custody. Danielynn only has one parent now and she needs to be with him (whoever it is).

125. It says so much for our society
...and how celebs live here. So many of them nowadays look so lost and unhappy. This poor woman was used from the time she was a teenager and had to claw her way up so that she and her son could survive. I defy anyone to say that this isn't news, and isn't a commentary about our society today. Who is next...Brittany, Lindsey, Nicole Ritchie...most of these people aren't really on my radar screen, as Anna was not, however, I see them constantly chased by the media, with their every move recorded, and all I can think is that it's a matter of time before a tragedy happens.

Funny, I saw "The Queen" this past weekend, and I can't help but think about Diana now in terms of this current tragedy.

RIP, Anna
