Does anyone use a permanent coffee filter?
How do you like them? Pros? Cons?

1. My coffee-maker came with one. Works pretty good.
Although, in all seriousness, I don't make coffee that often. But when I do the perma-filter works just fine.

4. How easy is it to clean?
Do you just rinse it out?

35. Rinse?
That seems like too much extra work.

Dump old grounds. Put in new coffee. Cooking done.

And I like the users of permanent filters just fine, whether they are pros or cons. In fact, I applaud them for helping to save the environment.

11. You will notice, however, that I am the only one who actually answered your question.
:P

The others are merely answering what they THINK you asked.

You can't fool me into giving a wrong answer!

14. Strict grammarian - strict constitutionalist.
Both are code-speak for "douchebag".

37. Oh boy...

It is not immediately obvious to me that the lifecycle impact of a permanent filter is lower than using unbleached paper filters.

Permanent coffee filter are made of plastic and metal - nonrenewable resources. Paper is a renewable resource.

Permanent coffee filters require washing, which consumes fresh water and produces wastewater. If you use detergent to wash the permanent filter, then you are producing polluted wastewater. That would have to be compared with the water pollution attributable to the quantity of unbleached paper filters equivalent to the expected useful life of the permanent filter.

But, really, compared with the environmental and political impact of coffee growing, roasting and importation, the choice between a permanent filter and an unbleached paper filter is probably nibbling at the edges of the overall impact of coffee consumption.

(three cups a day, minimum here)

3. I've had one of those for many years.
It's still as good as new, and I haven't had to buy disposables in all this time. I love it.

21. No effect that I ever noticed, but...
...I put so much sugar in my coffee that I'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference. (A friend of mine says, "Would you like some coffee with your sugar?") I've heard it said that the gold filter actually improves the taste over the paper version, though.

22. No effect as far as I can tell.
I've had a thing about paper filters ever since I saw a co-worker use toilet paper (yes, clean) as filter.

And I wish we could find a replacement. We drink a lot of coffee, and the buildup gets pretty bad.
Also, I find that if we grind our coffee too fine, a lot gets through the filter and makes the coffee sort of sludgy. Not grinding it enough has it's own problems too :P

but we don't use it. Harleydad doesn't like something about it ... but I'm not sure what. (And it's not that he has to clean it.) Maybe he grinds his coffee too fine.

25. I have a French press.
I drink a LOT of coffee, however. I like the French press, but it's too strong for the amount of coffee that I normally consume. More than two cups give me the shakes.

26. i agree, i learned that the hard way when i got my french press
i drink a lot of coffee so after my usual 3 large morning cups of FP i could have cleaned every house in my neighborhood and still had time to repaint my living room all before noon.

IMO

I prefer a french press </coffee snob> but I'm usually in to much of a rush for that so I just use a paper filter and go.

substitute paper towels for one when I run out.

32. We use a plastic one
on our second in ten years or something. The holder is plastic and so it the whole coffee maker except for the carafe so as for taste...I have none when it comes to coffee so don't go by me, but everybody else in the house seems ok with it.

I have a french press too but it is more of a hassle to clean - and posters above..you don't have to make it that strong - try using less coffee, duh.

I throw the plastic perm filter right in the dishwasher - just watch out for the dishwasher rack's spines - they can poke a hole in the screen (that's why we are on our second filter) I got both of mine at Ace hardware.

36. Our coffeepot came with one
and my husband doesn't seem to have a problem with it. He's the coffee drinker in the house. I like that I'm using another wasteful consumable in the form of paper filters.
