When was the last time you moved?
I mean from one residence to another, not just physically.

Did you go from a bigger place to smaller, or smaller to bigger, or same to same? Did you move in with someone or ditch a roommate, get a divorce...?

I'm at the end of my move. It's been hell.

6. OMG. Our last move was H-E-L-L!
We moved in early December of 2005, so a little over a year ago. The rent in our last place went up just once too often and we'd had it. We found this new place, quite a bit bigger and a bit cheaper and jumped on it. We gave notice and the next day, they had found a renter. We literally had four days to move. Granted, we were only moving two miles east, literally just down the same street, but my God, it was awful. We couldn't find enough boxes, so we had to load boxes, run them down to the new place, unload, run back to the old place, reload, rinse, later and repeat. One night, we were moving furniture at 2:00 am. It was crazy. We only had one friend who was able to drop everything and help, and I think she dropped and misplaced more than she moved. It was crazy.

I will never move again. I plan on dying in this little apartment I'm in right now.

Well, Mr. kt says next time, we're hiring movers and allowing ourselves more time. But I still plan on dying right here in this apartment.

I've move SO many times in my life ..... I'm done with it. Unless we win the lottery and get a second place in NYC .... my ass is staying put!

63. 4 days was C-R-A-Z-Y!
But we just had to get out while we could.

Funny story. While we were moving, many of our neighbors who came walking by offered to help carry items to the cars and the rental U-Haul truck. They, down the very last one, confessed jealousy that we were able to find a place and get out. The owners hiked the rent whenever they could legally by the amount they could legally. Our rent was skyrocketing. We were fortunate to get out when we did. If we'd stayed there, we'd had to either rob a bank or live in a tent on the street, the rent was climbing so high!

10. April 2006.
I moved from a 1,300-square-foot apartment to one of similar size, but I was moving from an apartment in which I lived alone into an apartment I was to share with another adult and a pre-schooler. So, we had a moving truck and two strong movers, and we stopped at my place and loaded my crap in the truck, then to my SO's place and loaded his and his daughter's stuff into the car, then stopped at Casa de Dolo/Hedges to pick up a bed frame and box spring they generously gave us...then, finally, into the new place.

There is a LOT of crap in our basement right now. Eventually, we'll move into an actual house and have space to put it.

We did that as the young un went off to college, and now our house is WAY too much for the two of us.

I think we will spend the next year here then build, somthing a bit smaller.

23. 2000
moved from an unbelievable shit hole into my first home...

I didn't even have one full bathroom. My shower was in the greenhouse (I kid you not) and showering out there in the winter, well, I don't think you could even imagine it. My toilet was in a small closet off of the kitchen. The septic leaked into the basement, along with a couple feet of rain water, and knocked the oil tank off of it's cement pad. THEN the landlord (who lived in New York) sold the place to a real dink, who had the nuts to raise our rent before even fixing any of the shit in the place. We left a couple of months after that.

I now live in a 3 bedroom ranch, on one acre of land (with new septic btw) that I bought in 2001 for 85k. LOL, the place is now worth 135k. Made out like a bandit. Taxes are only 1k per year. Some cosmetic stuff needs to get done, but that's because it was built in 1974. Slowly, things are getting done. Last year we put on a new roof, which took our savings. But with tax returns coming in, we'll get back on track soon.

24. I hate moving
In the last 16 years, I have lived in 7 apartments in Boston, plus my job requires me to relocate during the summer months, and in the last 14 years, I have lived in 4 houses at our off-site location.

1990 - moved from hometown to Boston for grad school - nice apartment, great roommate, not-so-good location
1992 - got a job - moved to temp apartment in Boston, while I moved to the summer location (house #1)
1992 - moved from temp apartment to real apartment - ok apartment, great landlords, horrible location
1993 - moved to summer location for 2 months (house #2)
1993 - got a better job with the parent company
1993 - moved from apartment to rental house - dirtbag landlord rented us a house on which he had defaulted. Bank evicted us. Lawyers were involved.
1994 - moved to summer location for 2 months (house #2)
1994 - moved to a triple decker a few blocks away - more dirtbag landlords
1995 - moved to summer location for 2 months (house #2)
1996 - moved to summer location for 2 months (house #2)
1996 - moved to triple decker in a new neighborhood - great location, so-so apartment that deteriorated quickly, another dirtbag landlord.
1997 - moved to summer location for 2 months (house #2)
1998 - moved to summer location for 2 months (house #3)
1998 - moved to high rise in town - LOVE IT! - GREAT location (I walk to work - no car), great rent, superb management company

My job changed, and I no longer have to relocate for the summer, the work is divided up amongst my department, and I only have to go out for 2 5-day weeks - we rent one house for our team, and move in and out over the weekend, so it's kind of like going out of town on business, rather than a relocation.

2006 - spent 2 weeks at summer location (house #4)
2007 - will spend 2 weeks at summer location (house #5) - we weren't all that fond of the landlord, but the location was great.

I don't intend to move again (within Boston), unless it's to a bigger unit in the same building.
The next time I move out of this building, it will be feet first, under a sheet. Unless I leave Boston altogether, but that's not very likely - this place is home now.

27. End of April, 2006.
I had been living with my elderly mother, who died in late December of 2005. I cleared out more than 50 years of packrat-ism from that house, gave away tons of stuff, donated hundreds of books to the library and friends beyond belief, tossed outdated travel guides. And brought hundreds of books with me.

The house was on the market less than a week. I signed the contract the day before St. Patrick's Day and moved six weeks later. Took a lot of the furniture with me when I moved from an 8-room house into a 5-room (but spacious) condominium.

I don't know how I made it through that move. But I moved four months to the day after my mother died. And yes, I had professional movers.

Ironically, the people who bought the house got transferred recently. So it has now passed hands another time, which (in my old neighborhood) means the house will be referred to as "The ***** (my surname) house" for about 10 years longer than if the original purchasers had stayed. I guess it is my legacy. I miss that house and the neighbors like hell.

Moved to be closer to spouse's job. This house is about the same size as the house we left.

Moving was easy because we didn't sell our former home, we kept it as a rental house. We were able to take our time getting moved, doing it all on weekends. We took about 2 months to get moved completely.

52. hmm, April of 2004
from my inlaws house, into our current home. My wife and I (before marriage) lived with her parents for about 4 months, and it caused some strain. Especially between her, and her father. I actually got along with her parents rather well...and my wife got tired of living at home, so we looked for a house of our own. We found our house in March, and it took a strong 6 weeks to get everything taken care of, and we moved in in mid April of 2004.

About three weeks later, we got married in our yard.....:) The move itself was physically draining on me. I moved 99.9% of our stuff, and everyone and their mom was giving us free stuff constantly...here's a couch, here's a table, here's a night stand, etc, etc....My wife works full time, and I was just a part timer, so I did all the moving...it took me three strong days to do it, and after I was done...I melted/bonded with our couch, and didn't move for two whole days....:)

I also had to do a lot of cleaning, in our new home to boot...shampooing floors, and all that jazz....

We moved into a bigger place. We were in a two bedroom house, in town, and we moved into a 3 bedroom house, with 5 acres of land...a good improvement imo....:D

I helped move my inlaws out onto our property this past July...it was utter hell, and the temps were over 100 most of the time...thank god for water, and AC.

I moved from my parents' house to Quincy to live with Sniffa and the Mrs. Moved from a large ranch house w/ 1.5 acres and a kick-ass swamp, to a decent 2 bedroom apt. surrounded by pavement and concrete. sigh...

's ok though, really :P

It sucks. Big time.

Especially moving the week between Christmas and New Years. Nothing is open. It's near impossible to get the cable, electricity and gas turned on/off.

I went from a one bedroom apartment to a two-bedroom with a roommate. We both decided that paying well over $1000/month was getting unmanageable.

I've moved basically yearly for the past, oh, 7 or so years. I refuse to move again anytime soon.

61. Last June.
From owning an immaculate home in FL to renting a filthy small house in TN while we build. Most of our stuff is still in boxes until we move again ... hopefully before June. Took us until just last week to get the moving company to send someone to fix the damage to the piano and china cabinet. Landlord still hasn't fixed the cracked window we reported in June. Dinosaur of a refrigerator leaks on the floor if the ice maker is on -- "fixed" twice but still broken. Wood stove is a hazard because of a cracked flu liner. We had to pay money out of our own pocket to find that out. Owner doesn't seem to care if we burn the place down by using the wood stove anyway and won't pay to fix it. (No, we're not using it -- but what about the next tenants?)

No change in living arrangements, unless you count the cat we acquired when we got here.

Yep, it's been hell ... and still is sometimes. We clear brush on the property where we're building, just to relieve the stress.

I hope you get settled down soon. Moving is hell.

62. Last July
I moved an hour away to be close to my new job. We moved into a house over twice the size of our duplex, which I know makes us bad people (according to some people who posted on the Edward's house thread). It is an older home though and we hope to start our family there.
I hated moving. We still have a lot of reorganization to do and will probably be having a garage sale in the spring.

65. I bought this house in 1990
Edited on Wed Feb-07-07 11:09 PM by Blue_In_AK
and I don't plan to leave. Too much of my heart and soul in it (not to mention money).

I was living in a rental at the time. My landlady got foreclosed on and I was forced to move. There was a big real estate crash here at the time, so I got into this HUD house for relatively little (even though it had an undisclosed bad roof that I had to replace soon after moving in). It has appreciated by about 2-1/2 times in the intervening years. Buying this place was one of the best decisions anyone else ever made for me. :)

66. In August 2003 from a tiny town in Florida,
to a University Campus on Arabia, United Arab Emirates to be exact. I like it here, but I've never lived anywhere more than four years, so a part of me would like to move again. There are too many things keeping us here, though, so we are probably here for a long while.
