Schoolyard politics
I hardly talk politics in school, since we dont have young dems, and my only class where we have political discussion really is philosophy. In English today, I struck up a conversation or maybe vice versa with a kid who is in that philosophy class with me, I know hes a right winger but I like him as a person, nice kid and doesnt give me shit for being liberal, so we're talking, and I told him how I suprised I was that 13 people in our class after learning the case of Tim McVeigh were against excuting him, I was one of them, I opposed on my grounds on opposing the death penalty 100%, he was for it, then he said something like Texas is where I wanna be, hes in ROTC I know, he said was an NRA conservative Methodist, I chuckled I am a future member of the ACLU liberal Catholic and I wanted to live in New England or a city. I am gonna have to debate people like this in government I bet next year. People appreciate my insights, and they know, I generally know my shit, so that was a neat part of my day. Politics or Philosophy in general in school is pretty interesting stuff,

1. Ugh...let him come to Texas...
Thanks to the crappy Bushconomy, college tuitions are now unregulated, and therefore will go through the roof.

We have a fine state school for young conservatives like him (I know - I went there): www.tamu.edu

3. Hes a nice kid but Ive found him very conservative
Which is fine. He also said like Bush and Heston I answer to. I was troubled by it but if he doesnt want to raise hell because I am a liberal, its cool. Neat little ancedote for y'all, is all this is.

6. Well, hopefully you can educate him a little.
A lot of conservatives are the way they are because that's the only message they receive. Just tell him that thanks to one of his heroes, Texas isn't exactly paradise. ;-)

12. Oh yeah...ROTC...tell him to come to A&M then...
FULL-TIME ROTC - uniforms EVERY DAY!!! Just like the service academies. In fact, A&M turnes out more officers than any schools but the academies.

Ours is Navy. Ya know funny thing is, way long ago in 8th grade when the ROTC visited our middle school, many of the kids laughed and shit at them, I enter my first period class well more so my second one, and so many kids in ROTC uniforms. My best friend's ex girlfriend is now in.

A&M has Air Force, Army and Navy/Marine Corps ROTC. :-)

Oh, it has the Bush41 Library, too. How can a young Republican resist?

College Station is a cultural black hole, but when you're Republican, you don't care.

17. You don't have to convert zealots
they convert themselves given time and truth.

But you can learn, and teach in appropriate turn.
If he is a friend, cool. There are really very few actual stereotypes
once you know a person. and Conservatives, are sometimes complex beings, irresistibly drawn toward simplicity. Conversely, there are quite a few Democrats addicted to conventional wisdom in lieu of analysis as well.

2. You do indeed know your stuff
And being in the minority, it's good that you know your stuff so well.

Scary to think that someone wants to move to Texas because it fits with their ideology, though. :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:

5. Especially on history
:) I know my stuff
I was suprised though that most of the class opposed excuting McVeigh. Suprising because the liberals who do support the death penalty likely would have supported it in his case. I think that class has a good mix of people but I think I am the only semi socialist :).

9. And I was opposed to executing Tim McVeigh because I'm sure he
had a lot more info he could have offered. But then, some of that info might have been damning to certain administration officials, which is why, perhaps, they were so quick to execute him.

But big major terrorists like him should be kept alive, so we can always drill their brains for more info.

Though I am also anti-death penalty, in McVeigh's case my objection was purely pragmatic, not ethical or moral. :-)

It is surprising that you had so many who didn't want him executed.

13. It was very suprising
Especially after you see McVeigh showing no remorse what we he done. McVeigh sounded to me to be an ultra libertarian. I havent read about him really.

4. that's wonderful
that young people are learning to think and debate each other. I was on the debating team in High School and it was great fun and I learned an awful lot about a variety of subjects. I'm sure you'll do well and will hold your own in any debate on politics.

Damn I can't wait till high school so I can be in a class with people who actually know their stuff. Ask any of my conservative friends why they like Bush, they always say, "Cause he's a Republican."
