. . . when ah was a young'un! Now get yer ass in gear!"

Or . . . get a good book and crawl back in the sack . . . might be the sensible thing to do.;)

16. my parents didn't even have a mule
walked 10 miles to and from school, barefoot.

With an orange for lunch.

In their hand-me-down clothes, if not in potato sacks.

The oldest carried the youngest, piggyback.

In the winter, they took turns wearing the one pair of shoes.

Did homework by candle-light, after 4 hours of chores, after cornbread and buttermilk for dinner.

It made them STRONG and SELF RELIANT (and skinflints).....they think everyone else should suffer the same.

Sigh.

17. Mercy.
You're from some tough stock!

(My dad and his brother had some of the same kind of rural poverty in S. Iowa . . . but things improved, gradually, as they grew up a bit. Dad still doesn't mind milk and cornbread for dinner, though.)

5. Walking in the cold is good for you
bundle up well and get out there! Great! But then I LIKE walking in the cold, though only for, say, half and hour when it gets to be minus 60 degrees.

The air temperature is -3, the windchill is "Are you fucking kidding me?"

10. The first day of my junior semester at UWGB ...
... the wind chill was SEVENTY THREE BELOW.

The clutch fluid in my little Honda was almost frozen.
My car would hardly move.
But I made it to campus.
(Only to find out that classes had been cancelled due to the extreme cold.)

Get thy arse to class, young Paduan!! :)

11. I'm in the library now, where it's nice and almost warm, and
Edited on Mon Feb-05-07 09:21 AM by Skidmore
actively procrastinating with the remainder of the reading for my Torts class this afternoon. BTW, it was -10 on the way over with windchills of -32.

15. Are there underground connector tunnels
... between buildings ? UWGB does - that was a saving grace.

At least you're on campus, doing something for another class.
Disqualifies you from 'total slacker' status.

You have my permission to skip the upcoming one as long as you continue with your Tort reading :)

13. Enjoy it while you can!
...since with global warming, how much longer will you ever get the chance to see your breath freeze in midair and then shatter when it hits the ground?

14. they opened up Soldier Field for idiotic tail gaters yesterday
As I drove by the stadium during the game, I counted 7 cars of complete and total idiots.

Tailgating in an empty stadium? with -6F temps, and a heavy, wet, cold wind off the lake, blowing into your face? AND no heating tents permitted (Fire hazards)

Folks, the game was in Florida. How does tailgating on Chicago's lakefront make this somehow fun, especially in this weather?
