WTF....I don't know if it's sour grapes or what (I know there's a lot of Patriots fans on here), but all I hear is hate, hate, hate. You sound like a bunch of freepers. I thought we here on DU are supposed to be the good guys. Even if a team we don't like wins, we still congratulate them on the win, and don't be bad losers. Freepers are the ones, who when they lose, say stuff like "this guy sucks."

Both Dungy and Manning (along with pretty much the rest of the Colts) go about their job humbly and respectfully. They don't talk shit, they don't brag, they don't go out and do dumb shit out in town....I just don't understand the hate for these two guys.

Look....I'm the guy who put up the "Jesus Saves" sticky that offended a lot of Christians on this board. Even though I'm a non-denominational Christian, I don't take religion too seriously. I am one of the most vocal people you will ever find on the separation between church and state. However, getting mad at Dungy because he thanked God is ridiculous. The guy's been through a lot....his son just committed suicide last year. After all he's been through, who cares if he's a little religious? You act like he's forcing his religion down your throat like some fundie....it's quite the opposite. He's just thanking God for his happy moment. There's nothing wrong with doing that in public. He's not putting up the 10 Commandments at the courthouse. He's just a happy, nice guy who's been through a lot, and he's thanking God for his brief happy moment. If Dungy had thanked Allah, all the freepers would have hated on him, just like a lot of you guys are hating on Dungy now. However, the same people on DU, who are excoriating him about thanking God, would have been backing him up if he thanked Allah.

Also, the hate on Manning is ridiculous, also. He's one of the nicest guys in the sport. He's quiet, he's humble, he's not afraid to make fun of himself, and he's very respectful. DU should love a guy like that, but surprisingly you hate on him. I don't get it.

1. I agree
I'm a pretty big atheist asshole a lot of the time, but I have no problem with that statement. Their attitude on the field is spectacular. They don't do all that TO/Chad Johnson showboating shit that just pisses me off. I don't know that I like their politics, but I also don't really frickin' care about it since they are there for my football entertainment.

2. I second
We aren't very religious, but I respect Tony Dungy's right to thank anyone he wants.

For me, Coach Dungy, Coach Lovey, Manning, and the rest of the Colts represent the best of professional sports. I have two sons (12 & 11) who are into many sports and I love having coaches and athletes like this that they can look up to. We work very hard to keep our kids' heads in the right place and with some of the crap that goes on in kids' sports these days, it can be very challenging. Just yesterday at a basketball game, a 12-year-old boy had a complete crying meltdown when my son evaded his block and scored. It didn't even change the outcome of the game, but that boy could not process the disappointment of one single play. Unfortunately, we see that at almost every game--basketball, baseball, soccer, floor hockey, you name it. The Ron Artests of the world get an awful lot of airtime and it's great to have the right behavior getting some airtime too.

Hate is the crack cocaine of emotions; for some, it's a high they know is distructive, but don't care, because the high feels so good.

...great line!

To add a simile to your metaphor (& I never metaphor I didn't like ;-) ), the hate/crack is like Lays Potato Chips -- you can't eat just one.

4. Maybe you should take your own advice
Isn't it more than a little hateful to call everyone freepers?

Just sayin'...before you go calling other people out on their anger, you might want to check your own.

5. You're right. I'm guilty as well.

However, I disagree with you on one point. I didn't call anybody a freeper. I said in this matter they are exhibiting freeper-like behavior. To me, that's a huge difference. Some people don't see any difference. I tried to make it constructive criticism, but failed miserably.

I think it's fairly typical frustrated-football-fan reactions, rather than freeper-like behavior, but that's just my opinion.

You're certainly entitled to yours, and I appreciate the clarification.

13. I don't feel any hate......but, I find it disturbing that exceptionally affluent entertainers
credit God for their success. I suppose they think it's witnessing. I think it is comparable to actors thanking Jesus at the Oscars. But Dungy and Manning present positive public personas and the Colts deserve their victory. But lay off the freep name calling, OK?

40. I think he credits God with his talent.
And if that is how he feels then who cares? I would feel the same way if I were him. Almost all of the teams say a prayer before the game. To keep them safe and to play to the best of their ability.

21. Well, I don't have any dog in this, but Peyton Manning is an asshole.
First, he moons a female trainer:

http://www.tennessean.com/sports/titans/archives/03/10/41915203.shtml?Element_ID=41915203

Yep, the lady was kneeling down behind him examining his injured foot, and he drops trou and shoves his rectum and gonads in her face. Now, THAT'S a classy, humble guy. :eyes: His college lost that lawsuit, big time.

Then, he goes on to defame her in a later book, for which he loses ANOTHER lawsuit! What an ignorant dumbass!

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/colts/2003-12-25-manning-lawsuit_x.htm

Sorry, Peyton Manning is anything but nice, quiet, humble and respectful - he's a jackass.

24. No, the hate on Peyton Manning is NOT ridiculous.
You obviously have not really followed him or his career. He's a whiny jackass that throws his team under a bus every time something goes wrong. It's never his fault - he always barks at his teammates or the refs. Plus, you can see the other posts where he's acted like much less than a gentleman.

The NFL has done a good job keeping his image clean because they want him to be the poster child, but quite frankly, he's a real asshole.

28. Could you save the the trouble and show me some of the "hate" you're talking about?
I saw Manning called a "jackass" and a "whiner" in this thread, and say Dungy called a "homophobe," but you had to see something in other threads to start this one. All I've seen so far is LynneSin's thread about religious references, and to be perfectly frank those make me roll my eyes too. It doesn't mean I "hate" two guys I've never met, it just means I'm tired of hearing that shit from athletes and coaches. Your mileage may differ.

If you're referring to something I missed, what is it? I have noted as of late that "hate" is a grossly overused word, often used by people any time you dare to disagree with them on anything. Are there actual examples of hate towards Manning and Dungy on this board, and if so, where?

30. It's not "hate"
Questioning someone's opinions regarding religion is not hate.

It's entirely possible to respect Dungy's ability as a football coach but still reserve the right to debate his and Irsay's post-game comments and their implications for the nature of God.

I, at least, would respond the same way whether he said "the Lord," "Allah," "Vishnu," or "Zeus." Crediting a supreme deity for success on the football field is the issue. The name of that deity isn't so important.

31. Thank you for your post
I've had a hard time understanding why people have this bug up their ass over Dungy giving credit to God.

Dungy's had a hellish past year with the death of his son and if his belief in a higher power gave him the strength to go on then more power to him. If he feels a need to acknowledge and thank God for bringing him to this point then he has every right to say it w/out people getting all bent out of shape.

I simply just don't understand this place (DU) at times.

The God issue is a big one- Don't you dare give any credit to your
higher power on the air! Exercising your 1st Amendment rights without
shoving it down anyone's throat? How dare you! :sarcasm:

And I understood perfectly your well worded term, "Freeper-like behavior".
Many here didn't.
It's the difference between called a misbehaving child a "bad" child
and telling him he's behaving badly.

You didn't call anyone a Freeper.

Dungy and Lovie are two of the nicest coaches in the NFL.

But, as was well stated earlier, hate is the crack cocaine of emotions.

I'm a Democrat because it's the party of acceptance, of love. You couldn't tell that from DU sometimes. Hatred of singers, actors, artists, athletes, coaches... People can't say "I don't really like listening to X," it's got to be "X is a talentless fuckwad who should die in a horrible car crash!"

I don't get it. I really don't. Dungy and Manning are good, deserving professionals. Makes me sick to read some of what I've read.

Now, if we're hating on Steely Dan, I can understand that.
