God won the Super Bowl!!
According to Irsay, Dungy, and Manning.

Why even play the fucking game?

Just ask the Mysterious One who He is pulling for.

Probably avoid a lot of injuries and DUIs.

Dungy and Smith would have gotten to the Super Bowl this year even if they were white. Their color wasn't responsible for the teams's success.

29. there's nothing significant about a Christian coach
I'm not aware of any NFL coaches who practice a religion other than Christianity. Are you?

Since the vast majority of NFL coaches are Christian, it's not noteworthy that a Christian-coached team won the Super Bowl. Dungy and Irsay are just shoving their religion in our faces.

And if their religion includes a being who influences football games but can't do anything about world hunger, they deserve to be asked whether that being is real or just a product of their egos and imaginations.

Coughlin is another example.

But still, if you got any NFL coach to say what religion he is, he'd probably list some variety of Christianity. Some are just more in-your-face about it than others.

The DU religious forum has stopped being atheist evangelist in your face 100% of the time trying shore up their self esteem and get a conversion (amusingly called "growth" by the portion of the atheist crowd that thinks that the word is a cute insult), and it now has occasional reasonable discussions between those with faith in God and those with faith that there is no God.

Just do not expect to get such a discussion from these folks. I do not think giving credit to others for what happens in your life is a popular idea here(God or no God involved in that credit giving).

Why shouldn't they acknowledge it with thanks.

Thousands of people play college sports of which only a select few move on to professional level and of which very few of those attain any significant long-lasting success.

If those successful few think it was a divine hand that set their talent apart why should anyone get a bug up their ass about it?

First - I think Irsay is a fucking asshole. I was living in Harrisburg when he pulled the Colts out of Baltimore many many years ago and didn't even have the decency to let Baltimore keep their team title of the Colts. So as far as I'm concerned - this is the INDIANAPOLIS Colts first Super Bowl win - that other one belongs to Baltimore

Second - that God crap gets annoying. I mean with all the horror going on in this world do you think God gives a rat's ass about who won the game?

Which God told Irsay to move the Colts from Baltimore to Indianapolis in the middle of the night? Did God recommend they sneak out of Baltimore like bandits? God must be the ultimate bandwagon jumping fan if a few years ago he wanted Kurt Warner and the Rams to win the Super Bowl. Now he wanted Peyton Manning and the Colts to win this Super Bowl.

37. Christians and the NFL are the ultimate hypocrites
I'm not religious. Yet the NFL allows drunks to gather in bars to watch their games but they won't allow families to take their children to churches to watch games. Where kids can watch the games and not have to be around drunks.

Then they get on there and claim God was on their side. Ultimate hypocrisy.

52. for anyone to claim God is on their side in sports is ridiculous
Sports means nothing on the grand scale of the universe, especially to a supreme being. One group of millionaires on a football field isn't any better than the other group of millionaires, when there are far more important issues going on in the world.

But yes, most Christians are hypocrites to begin with. I've known very very few who do not pick and choose verses from the bible to justify whatever they need to justify their desires at any particular moment, whether it's hate, need or convenience that they are desiring.

I thank God every day that my family and I are safe. Do you have a problem with that? Are we at the point where anyone who mentions God is going to be bashed by DU? (Don't answer that -- I already know.) Leave them alone with their beliefs. That's what you would want them to do with you, after all. Is there a problem with someone expressing gratitude?

No, I don't believe God gives a damn who wins a sporting game. I could be wrong, but I won't know in this life. But bashing people for giving thanks just because YOU don't believe in God is wrong and makes you look as intolerant as the ones who want want to turn the country into a theocracy. Just two sides of the same coin. From what I've seen, some DUers don't want religious freedom in this country -- they want no religion at all. There's tolerance for you. :eyes:

46. the OP doesn't say anything about his own religious beliefs
You don't have to be an atheist to think that crediting God for a Super Bowl victory is silly. Many of the progressive, open-minded Christians who post on DU probably agree.

It doesn't take an advanced degree in theology to note the irony of a God who meddles in football games but doesn't intervene to solve world hunger or rebuild New Orleans.

Why don't you show more tolerance toward people who expect more out of God than that?

Perhaps you missed where I said I don't believe God cares who wins a football game. Sure, it might be silly, but it's even sillier to post several threads that make fun of someone who is simply expressing gratitude, however misguided you might think it is.

Have I indicated that I missed any irony? No! I don't pretend to know how God works.

It's not a matter of people expecting more from God. It's a matter of ridiculing someone for being thankful, for whatever reason that doesn't pass your judgment. That's what's going on in this thread and others. Why should I be tolerant of people ridiculing others?
