Until tonight, I have NEVER heard or seen Prince play.

And you know what? I kinda like his music. And that guy sure CAN play the gee-tar.

(I bet you thought I was going to say I hadn't regretted not hearing before. Didn't you?)

The doo-rag was a bit much, though.

2. doo-rag LOL
I have loved Prince since he was playing clubs in DT Minneapolis before he hit big.

One of my favorite nightclubs in Minneapolis is prominently featured in his movie, "Purple Rain". I used to hang out at First Avenue every weekend.

19. I went there too!
I wasn't a regular, but I was in many times in the mid 80s.

I used to go to Glam Slam too, in later years.

5. Is he still popular?
Serious question. I recall him from my late teens/early 20's. He is sort of a strange guy. He changed his name several times...Prince... the Man Formerly Known as Prince... now back to Prince.

Dh and I were laughing tonight over the Superbowl's choice of halftime entertainment. Not that I watched it, mind you. I had my nose buried in a book on US history.

7. The reason he changed his name
Prince's (his real name is Prince Rogers Nielson or Nelson) old record company screwed him over and he owed them some albums. So he dropped his real name and recorded some crappy albums under the symbol for the old company to get out of his contract. When he signed with a new company, he went back to using his real name again.

He really impressed me. I even liked the shadow effect of the billowing screen-thing.

13. I've never been a big fan of his music. There were several songs
of his that I thought were pretty good. I'll give props to anyone who can actually make you feel something through their guitar.

My three favorite sounds in the world:
A fine tuned blues guitar
A fine tuned Harley, and
Stevie Nicks' voice.... oh lawd does her voice do funny things to me!

BTW... how's the shoulder doing? Pain levels easing off any?

PEACE!

26. I was VERY diappointed with Ms Nicks tonight. I am cursed with a "perfect ear."
Edited on Sun Feb-04-07 11:25 PM by Redstone
I don't have Perfect Pitch (I can't hum a b-flat without hearing it, for example), but I ALWAYS know when an instrument is mistuned, or a wrong note is played, or someone sings off-key.

Like I said, it's a CURSE. So many recordings, especially live ones, and I KNOW I'm going to hear the ONE off note again, and it's NOT fun.

And I gotta tell you, little Stevie was singing flat at least eight times during that song.

Which is too bad. She was a damn good singer before.

Edit: Shoulder's not bad today, thank you so much for asking. Probably because for the last three days, I've been doing the kind of work (writing a magazine article) that I can do on a laptop, sitting on the couch with my arm on a pillow.

15. Prince is an amazing song writer and musician -- he wrote the hit for Sinead
O'Connor "Nothing Compares 2 U" and also wrote "Manic Monday" for the Bangles.

The guy can play!

You and Orrex are right: his talent is definitely overlooked a bit - the persona drowns out the skill for the casual viewer...

people understand the reference.

Not just good....amazing. They say that he can pick up almost any instrument and work wonders with it.

21. Prince may be the most underrated guitarist alive
It's a shame that his calculated and deliberate weirdness have distracted people from his actual talent over the years, because he sure as heck knows which string is which.

25. Oh, he's a great guitarist
He could have played Hendrix in a film when he was younger and actually played the guitar licks instead of synching them. Very underated. But I've listened to Prince since 1984 or so and heard several different styles from him.
