I LOVED Prince.......in 1985. Since then he has hit refresh dozens of times and had no luck.

For the US to pull a 20 years past it's prime act for the biggest media event of the year is just acceptance of total decay. We have no pride or willingness to take a risk in the US anymore. We're replaying the same old movie hoping it has a different ending.

So, so, sad.

8. I concur - Prince was da BOMB tonight
Remember that huge rivalry he and Michael Jackson had 20 years ago? How many people back then would have predicted that Prince would ultimately have a longer shelf life?

44. I definitely agree. I was pretty impressed.
It was way better than seeing tons of replays of Janet Jackson's nipple.

I'll even go so far as to say that the Prince halftime show was better than the Stones halftime show last year.

47. I was thinking the same exact thing - it was Prince and nobody but Prince
I hated those Super Bowls where they felt that they had to cram as many 'superstars' into a 15 minute show as possible.

Prince is amazingly talented, one of the best guitar players out there today - he doesn't need some teeny-bopper popstar of the moment honing in on his music.

Great job Prince - I am glad I stuck around to watch that show!

67. I agree wholeheartedly, and I'm not a real big Prince fan
But he was undeniably great. He showed more energy and technical skill in that performance than probably all the acts from the last five Super Bowls put together.

He raised the halftime-performance bar for all to follow. No longer can you just go out and slop through a set just because you're ultrafamous and you think you can.

66. I think he is an amazing performer.
It was all about Prince that night. Some like it , some don't . Some of his music is part of the soundtrack to my life. Especially the Purple Rain era because that's a time when I was really happy. I was 4 years old then but it mattered to me. The Purple Rain album was played all through my house - so when I hear " Baby I'm A Star " I got out of my seat and danced because damn it I need to feel good sometimes.

He was amazing. Twenty year old songs or no, they still sound fresh and relevant.

He still has more talent in his little finger than Britney/Alicia/Fergie/Justin or any others have in their entire bodies.

Heaven & Hell (aka Black Sabbath 2.0) - broke up 1983

The Police - broke up 1984

Van Halen - broke up 1985

And while I'm admittedly guilty of not paying much attention to Prince in recent years, I thought his halftime show was fucking outstanding.

Is that everything about THIS decade sucks ass, including most of the music??

If I had a choice of re-living the 80's or staying in this decade, I'd go back in a heartbeat. Even re-living puberty and tolerating Reagan again would be better than this fascist Chimpocracy, with corporate shit music.

There are a ton of indy stations, community stations and college stations playing new, exciting music. The Media Gods just aren't willing to take a risk. They demand a sure thing.

Demanding a sure thing is a path to decay.

36. New and exciting?
Most of the "indie rock" I hear sounds more or less the same (like the singer is doing his impersonation of Morrissey with a head cold...Death Cab For Cutie comes to mind), and most of it sounds vaguely derivative of stuff from 20 years ago...we already had the Smiths. Why do we need these guys? Please, tell me where this "new and exciting" music is, because I'm not hearing anything coming out of the "indie" scene.

Even the announcers sounded bored. "Purple Rain in the rain, how about that"

Oh, yeah they were exited. The idiots in the crowd at a Superbowl will cheer anything that moves. They'd cheer a high school garage band playing thrash. If they don't they have wasted the $4k per person it cost them to be there.

BTW, I live in Seattle. The person who said that Jimi Hendrix is no longer relevant? His music is still played here daily. It's been covered hundreds of times by other more "relevant" musicians. I seem to remember a blistering version of "Axis: Bold As Love" on the Katrina fundraiser by none other than John Mayer. I'm not necessarily a Mayer fan, but the man can play.

I didn't pay any attention to the Super Bowls or their halftimes until last year (I missed Janet Jackson's famous performance, blast it!)
I watched the Stones again on Youtube on a better stereo and they sounded just fine, Prince sounded great, but then I caught U2's 2002 9-11 tribute. So for me it's a 3 way tie.

56. roflmao
someone posted that skit here recently, it's hysterical.

I agree about Prince, he can play just about any instrument there is. What I object to is kicking artists to the curb like what has happened to the artists Gen X grew up with. The boomers got to keep their icons; The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, and all others left alive, and the dead ones are revered, too. But our generation's artists were shoved out the back door of the labels when they first started getting crows feet and frown lines, because apparently the belief is that they can never equal the contributions of those musicians that were around when rock was born. That gripes me to no end. It is so nice to see people like Stevie Nicks and Debbie Harry and Ann Wilson, and yes, Prince, being pulled back into the limelight while they still have something to contribute. The agism against that generation of musicians is just awful and I think it is getting worse. Now that there is a slew of franchise 'singers' like Paris Hilton and Lohan and all those others, will artist expire once they hit the ripe old age of 25?

Super Bowl halftime is actually a pretty thankless gig. Nobody wants to watch a musician, the show has to be larger than life to play in a stadium setting, and you only get 10 minutes or so to make it happen.

I thought Prince did a great job considering these factors and the crazy purple rain.

And at least it wasn't some Toby Keith Lee Greenwood jingopalooza...

58. It was a great performance. We LOVED it. Even my 10 year old son loved it.
I had to load his ipod with Prince tunes last night! (After I screened the lyrics...Prince can get pretty raunchy!)

61. Cirque du Soleil at the Super Bowl is a sad day for America
Not Prince.

64. Prince was great, as expected
It beat the hell out of the last two tame acts. I love the Stones. But last year was pretty sad.

My two favorite halftime shows were U2 and Prince.

68. Prince NEVER does the same thing twice
He has taken more risks, musically, than you can count.

I'm just sure that the producers of the half-time show wanted the Purple Rain stuff. That's the stuff that was his most popular.

69. I thought he gave a pretty good performance
Nothing great (and maybe a little rushed), but I enjoyed the show overall.

71. I have to ask
who you would have had as the Super Bowl half-time entertainer. Just curious. After all, it is easy to criticize the choice that was made. Might be a bit more difficult to offer a suggestion that has a broad appeal across the many, many segements of viewers.

73. I'm of the opinion that many live performers just get better with practice
I've never cared to listen to Prince's recordings, but he at definitely knows how to put on a show and work a crowd. It was nice to see somebody ad libbing rhythym guitar parts as well instead of some two bar solo in a rigidly orchestrated crafted tune.

Plus, I think there is about a twenty year lag between when an artist becomes popular and the time when his/her fans become wealthy enough to dictate that their tastes are catered to. A question could be who will be the half time show in 2026? Will eminem come out of retirement? Maybe Disturbed or System of a Down? I'm just throwin' out some names--these are necessarily acts I'd want to see, just illustratin' the point.
