Creepy, majestic, bizarre, beautiful - and bare breasts, too! Spain's La Merce

Can you IMAGINE the caterwauling in the advanced nation of the United States if a half-naked female puppet was parading down one of our streets? :/

9. I'll bet it's the worst chicken in all of Spain
What a beautiful pageant they have, however!

Even the dull glow of Amerika(tm) can't obscure that.

7. What a delight to watch! So artistic. Sort of reminiscent of
Cirque de Soleil. (sp?) BTW, anyone know if the performer who fell recently is OK?

11. Pictures from the Guelaguetza in Oaxaca, Mexico
Edited on Sun Feb-04-07 02:54 AM by TlalocW
This is from when I was in college back in... Wow, 1994. My last class for a Spanish degree, I took through a program through my college where you go to Mexico and take the class (professor from the university goes as well to teach and show you the sights). The Guelaguetza technically is celebrated on two consecutive Mondays in late July, but there are things that go on the entire month to coincide. It wasn't unusual for us to leave class to go explore the city and run into a parade.

Anyway, here are some Mexican versions of these large puppets. It's amusing, what with the bare breasts, to recall that these are call "Titeres."

Pictures 1 and 2 are shots of them dancing around in a square close to a large church in Oaxaca, and in the third, you can see fellow students Jacinta and Jennifer and then that's me holding the puppets hand. You can see the guy wearing the costume peaking out.

14. Very cool parade
The fundies would have a hissy over that.

They opened a church, not far from here, in an old movie theater. The theater had these great plaster reliefs on the walls -- they were these wonderful mermaids. I heard recently that the church covered the breastage areas of the mermaids with drapes. Those breasts have been there for decades, and as a kid I don't think I ever paid any attention to them. Now, as an adult, I remember them as being beautiful.

Not the fundies! "Cover those breasts up!", they must have shouted. The congregation will be full of temptation and evil thoughts if they are viewing pornography on the walls, while the word of God is being given to them.

They have a problem with the human body...even the artistic expression of the human body gives them the:scared: heeby jeebies.
