Poll question: Do you eat raw fish?
Here in Hawaii, raw fish and seaweed are seen as delicacies. I find them refreshing for some reason. They seem to clear up my throat. People put seasonings on their fish as well to make it even more satisfying to the tongue. .

As for seaweed, people just eat it right on the spot. I like seaweed myself.

Would you or have you ever eaten 'raw fish'?

Some of the people I have met from the Continental US cannot even fathom the thought of eating raw fish or seaweed.

4. I've had raw fish...
... at what was, in the `60s, the Pearl City Tavern on Oahu. But, my concern these days has nothing to do with taste, but rather with preparation. In the past, there was some time taken to ensure that the fish was free of dormant parasites. Nowadays, I think, there is less care in bringing that fish to table, and that concerns me.

Cheers.

5. is that mainly where you are?
Edited on Tue Jan-06-04 05:30 AM by La_Serpiente
Most places in Hawaii still clean their fish with great care.

The fish at some supermarkets in Hawaii are in poor quality. However, an overwhelming majority make sure their fish is fresh and cleaned.

But the places with the best fish are the mom and pop stores. They have made a niche for themselves here in the islands by making the quality of their fish better than that of the major supermarkets.

7. No... I left Hawaii in 1970.
Elsewhere, there is a problem with parasites. And, for it to be served raw, the only way to find those parasites, is to shred the fish, since the parasites are embedded in the meat.

Truthfully, I never had a problem with fish I was served in Hawaii, in restaurants, but that was a long time ago. I can't speak to what's happening locally in restaurants there now. I just don't know.

Cheers.

26. Parasites are mostly a problem in freshwater fish
The Japanese, who have been eating raw fish for centuries, use only saltwater fish.

You don't get tapeworm from Saltwater fish, and Freshwater fish tastes fishy.

15. Know your sushi chef!
Proper preparation of raw fish is not for amateurs. Got some bad sushi in Little Japan (Los Angeles) & discovered just what can happen when sushi goes bad.

I've heard good things about the sushi sold out of little mom & pop stores in Hawaii. Local Houston varieties include the Cajun roll with soft-shelled crawfish. (The crawfish is cooked & chilled first; would not recommend raw crawfish.)

19. I love ahi tuna/poke....
Charlie Trotter's to go in Chicago has the best. They marinate it in sesame oil with scallions and a chili sauce. It's a delicacy, very rich--a little is satisfaying I have it once a week, too. I think I'll go there for lunch today. Yum.

22. Sushi is OK
I only realy like some of the firmer fish. I went out with my mother in law a few days ago and had a piece of of o-torro (super high quality fatty tuna) that made me gag. $6 for an ounce of fish and a smidge of rice. What a waste.

My son on the other hand in fact made my wife give up her veggie ways. While she was pregers she had such terrible cravings for the stuff that she caved and has pretty much given up on being veggie.

For my sons second birthday (the earliest we would allow him to eat raw fish) he was taken out and ate $80 worth of sushi. Afterward the chef at the bar says over the counter "You, expensive BABY!" and gave them a Dragon roll. When he goes to his favorite restaurant the whole staff knows him and he often draws a crowd as he scarfs sushi and sashimi with his chop sticks. Not bad for a seven year old (five when he started using the chopsticks).

31. Another use for seaweed: the SPAM musubi!
Edited on Tue Jan-06-04 01:12 PM by KamaAina
I kid you not. A popular snack hereabouts, widely available at 7-Eleven and whatnot, is the musubi: a block of sticky rice (you flatlanders have NO idea how to cook rice :-) ) topped with a slice of -- you got it -- SPAM! (We eat more canned pigmeat than any other state, tho' Guam's got us beat all hollow: Hormel even makes a garlic SPAM just for them!)

Nori seaweed comes in at the end of the process: something has to keep the SPAM on top of the rice, yah? So, a strip of nori is wrapped around the whole shebang a couple of times, and hey presto! Time fo' grind.

Recently there has been sort of a gourmet movement in musubi: the traditional SPAM has been joined atop the rice block by other local favorites such as teri chicken, split hot dogs and so on. People take their musubi seriously: it is even possible to purchase a musubi press, which takes a lot of the drudgery out of preparing a few dozen for a picnic!

In conclusion, we salute the SPAM musubi in haiku:

Where does East meet West?
Consider the musubi:
Seaweed, rice -- and SPAM!

Edit: How many is a "vfew" dozen?
