11. Hot flashes suck...
I've been having them for about 8-9 years now from early menopause due to chemo from breast cancer. The best thing I've tried for them is medicinal marijuana. Works like a charm. Helps the mood swings, and the insomnia, too.

Don't think I haven't considered it. Not being able to sleep is rather bad for one's general health.

It has never made me sweat. However, I tend to be colder than most folks I know.

10. Standard frames work
And you can even use a standard box spring.

My argument is that sometimes with Tempurpedic you can get locked into a sleeping position that causes pain later

9. We got a knockoff version and love it
My husband shopped online and found one for $600. We went from sleeping on a waterbed to this, and it does provide better support. But it isn't heated, and so we've had to go back to warming rice bags before we go to bed to keep feet warm. The memory foam on the knockoff isn't as thick, but it does still mold to the body--and tends to wrinkle around the small of the back after a while. But the top zips off so we can fix it.

12. I have the mattress topper
and it is great. Much cheaper than getting the whole mattress, seems to do the job. I got it at LinensnThings about 7yrs ago and it's still like new surprisingly, it's not like the foam ones at all that sort of disintegrate and flatten out over time.

13. I have the mattress topper
and I can assure you that without it, I would be the grumpiest, most sleep deprived person on this planet (next to the enemy combatant detainees) -- the femansion has a 4 inch foam mattress that is uncomfortable as hell, I found one of the toppers at WalMart (so sue me, I'm a bad liberal) and bought it and my back pains have diminished, I can get a full night's sleep and the thing I like the mostest -- dust mites are not supposed to like them.

So, if I can one day afford the full mattress, you can bet I will invest in one.

Sleep is so damned important to our mental and physical health. :hi:

Oh, that's right, we don't have one any where near us.

I love my mattress topper and I am so serious, if it weren't for that thing, I'd probably be doubled over with back problems and be committed because of lack of sleep.

I hope you are doing well :)

I used to wake up aching from pressure points. Not any more! It doesn't appear warm to me either. Also, the pillow is a must have. It is expensive, but worth it to us for a decent nights sleep.

15. I have one
I am paralyzed and my husband has serious joint issues after a near fatal car wreck about 5 years ago. We had a regular spring mattress and tried to augment it with various pads and foam tops. We had the change to try out the Tempur mattress at a family member's house for a whole week last year and decided to buy one. I can't tell you what a difference it has made for us both. We both have an additional 2 or 3 hours in the mornings where we can be physically more active because we aren't recovering from sleep. -- plus his mobility is better all the time.

I suspect a sleep number air bed would provide similar support - but the body warmth reflected by the foam bed is very helpful too. (it is not a "hot" bed in the summer however".

Just my 2 cents.

16. I bought a new one on Ebay. WAY cheaper than getting one directly
from TP. Not sure why, but the person sells a lot of them. They tell you to walk around on them with your knees to soften them up, but we didn't. It softens up on it's own. Definitely try one out before you buy. Not everyone likes them, and they are pretty different. There are a few different companies out there, but I liked TP the best. I am not a big fan of super soft beds, I like the firmness of TP.

21. We bought one on eBay for $220, and love it..
We love it, and would never go back to a "regular" bed.
Actual cost was $175 plus shipping or so for 2 pieces of foam and a cotton cover in a full size mattress.
Our young friends, just married and she pregnant, decided to buy one through us, and I ordered a queen size for them delivered to our remote town for grand total of $280, plus or minus $5.
You'd be amazed how small you can fold a 4" piece of memory foam. We bought the 4" foundation piece too, makes a great combo.
As cheap as you can get it, unless you have access to a wholesale foam distributor.
They'll bless you forever, and for this cost, how can you NOT do it?
PM me if you want the guy I went to, but there's lots of foam sellers out there on eBay.
You pay WAY too much for the name Tempur Pedic.
Good luck.

Bruce

22. Looked at them and went with the Select Comfort.
As reported elsewhere, the tempur-pedics get VERY warm (and I'm already a very warm person) and they are horrendously overpriced (so is the select comfort).

I've had mine for over 8 years and will never go back. The biggest advantage for me is that if/when my back hurts I can adjust the bed to whatever makes it feel better.

27. The pillows get too warm for me....
I have the mattress topper, mainly because I'm towards the end of lifespan of my Simmons BeautyRest and wanted to add a little oomph. In the summer, it sometimes felt too warm, so I ended up putting two cotton top mattress covers over it (the air pocketing disperses the warmth a bit).

I'm not totally sure I'd consider the actual $2000 plus mattress set, for me, anyway. However, I can certainly understand its benefit for others. As someone else mentioned, I think the equally espensive air chamber mattresses might be a better choice for those who are a bit more warm-natured...

They are great, I have not had a problem with pressure areas since we got it. I have been using the cushions for years now and they work wonders. Yes they are expensive, but they last a long time.

25. You may want to look into natural rubber...
Edited on Wed Jan-24-07 12:45 PM by RiverStone
...mattresses as an alternative. I compared the two and found the natural rubber to be slightly less form fitting then the TEMPUR, but still very comfortable and the material itself is all natural.

They are both on the spendy $$$ side - so I can't wait to sleep on it when I can afford it!

Natural rubber is typically made organic, with no synthetic materials or toxic chemicals and is 100% biodegradable---so it's a very eco-friendly choice compaired to the TEMPUR beds (which are made with 100% synthetic materials). It also breaths much better then the TEMPUR beds - which I know can get quite warm in the summer.

Google natural rubber mattress and you will get tons of examples.

Wishing you parents happy sleeping! :boring:

28. We just got a Costco/Novaform Mattress topper -
The Novaform Choice - 2" of memory foam and 2" of quilted padding. We have a queen-sized mattress that is still firm but starting was starting to get too stiff for my husband with psoriatic arthritis to sleep on; once we got the topper, he was able to get a full 7 - 8 hours of complete sleep and started waking up without the usual nagging pain! He loves it - and it was only $140. I told some of my co-workers about the topper and they have uniformly indicated that they sleep and wake up much better.
Novaform is a Select Comfort brand of memory foam that is comparable to Temperpedic. It's great if you have arthritis, pressure point problems (like Fibromyalgia or Lupus)and joint pain.
Costco did the opposite to Novaform that Walmart usually does to most of it's vendors; the version they buy from the vendor has a higher weight support per inch (4.1 lbs) than the same version that BB&B or other box stores sell (3.2 lbs).
Costco sells 8" and 10" Novaform mattresses for about 2/3 the price of Temperpedic in stores that have been found comparable.
If a memory foam mattress is being considered, your parents might want to try out how it feels at a regular mattress store before committing to purchasing for it.
The only things you need to remember with a memory foam mattress are these -
1) They get hot. You tend to sink into the foam because body heat triggers the compression, and that will hold your body heat in. (that's one of the reasons we got the foam topper with the quilted pad instead of a mattress.) Hot flashes and night sweats can be a bear.
2) You need a stiff surface to place it on to support the mattress itself. Either a hard box spring with more support than just the usual coils, a plywood board, or firm mattress.

Good luck, and good sleeping.
Haele

29. I don't have one, but have slept on my brother's
and they were some of the best night's sleep I've ever had. Fortunately, there are other reputable sources for memory foam mattresses that won't cost nearly as much as the "Swedish Sleep System".

Check Costco - the NovaForm mattress actually uses denser foam for parts of the structure than Tempur-Pedic does and they seem to be well reviewed (and the queen-sized mattress is only $899 for the Comfortluxe model. If you go to the store, you may be able to pick up a queen for just $499 (a lesser, but well-reviewed model).

31. Mixed feelings.
I had one at a stay at a hotel once. I first sat down on the bed and fell in love with it. I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. But then the first night came around and I tossed and turned and I couldn't get comfortable. I was miserable the next day and thought about getting a new hotel room. Then the second night, I ended up having the most comfortable, soundest sleep in my life. My wife had a similar experience.

So it's hard to say. You can't really get a good impression of how you'll like it just by sitting on it at the furniture store.

32. I have a latex foam mattress and love it
It differs from Tempur-pedic in that TP are slow release foam while the regular latex mattresses will not hold their shape (the way they conform to your body) when you move. TP mattress can create a rut that your body forms and it can be slow to return to its regular shape, especially in cold weather.

You can put a glass of wine on one side and jump up and down on the other. These mattresses do have different degrees of firmness. I have a 6" medium mattress with a 3" soft topper.

33. We've had one for three years
Edited on Wed Jan-24-07 01:56 PM by new_beawr
It takes a few nights to get used to.

It is, by far, the best mattress on which I've ever slept. When it's cold, the mattress is firmer. When it's warm, the mattress seems softer, but, you settle into your "cradle" and the bed feels firm thereafter. In my experience, the mattress does not trap heat and make you sweat, and I am a "hot" sleeper. The mattress looks and feels the exact same now as it did when it came out of the box. Also, you do not notice any movement from a sleep partner. When my wife was Pregnant, she really appreciated the cradling properties of the mattress.

A Downside is that it does not provide any "bounce" so it is not the best bed for certain conjugal activities....but, in our case, that pushed us into alternative methods of pneumatic exertion, which, in turn, has been beneficial. What this means to your 80 year old parents is not a subject on which I care to speculate.

Sought out a hotel that had them.

Not sold yet, however. I'd like to find a situation where I can sleep on one for at least a week.

36. Purchased one in Sept
My husband has a pain pump and we both had back pain in the mornings. After a two week break in period I don't have any back pain anymore. I also don't think it's any hotter then any other mattress. Due to my age (48) I was worried about sweating to death. I don't but I really don't know why. We had the pillow toppers for several years but after awhile that just didn't work for us anymore.

One of the best things we did was purchase this mattress. Remember the break in period and make sure you have extra pillows to assist your body during that time. After that the mattress and your body will fit to each other like a glove.

38. Have one, hated it, now I love it
It was too hot for me during the summer. When it's cold it is too firm when I first get in bed.

I ended up putting a feather bed on top of it. Now I love it. The support & comfort is still there but the feather bed took care of the temperature issues.
