My cousin came out today.
The family's reaction has been pretty much "Meh. No shit."

Is it bad that no one was really that surprised to find out?

1. Hehehhe -- my family was like that, too
Except, my sister called and asked. I didn't tell HER.

6. I think he was expecting a few more gasps.
He's been away at college for a few years, and had been claiming that he was dating a lot of girls. We all just mostly just smiled and nodded, and thought "Yeah, right."

Let's just say he didn't strike us as a ladies man.

5. As long as they don't secretly despise his sexually, then all is well.
There are families that hold everything in until they just explode. Mine wasn't. They told me right to my face what they thought. And it wasn't pretty. 6 months later, everything was back to normal.

12. When my best friend in college came out to me...
I literally said...And? I really didn't care. I loved him no matter what. Although his other friends were complete bitches. One told him she was sorry. SORRY?! Who the hell says that when their friend tells them something like that?

13. That's like the convo that a friend and I had when he came out.
"xmas, I don't want to shock you but you need to sit down."

"Ok Mike, what's wrong?"

"Sweetie, I have some shocking news to tell you. I don't know how you'll take it but...I'm gay."

"Mike? I was pretty sure when you took that picture of Trent Reznor out of my locker. I was positive when I caught you making out w/ Tim in the closet at Sarah's Sweet 16. Can we go to Dairy Queen now?"

I still don't understand how he thought I'd be shocked and dismayed. I've known since the day we met.

17. my folks weren't at all shocked about me, either...
In high school, i asked my mom about having a female friend (who i was not romantically interested in) spend the weekend, since she and i were in drama club together, we had rehearsals for an upcoming musical, and her mom was going out of town (so her mom couldn't drive her back and forth to school all weekend).

Mom looked me dead in the eyes and, without a hint of sarcasm, said "I have to say no... because you have a little brother, and when he's 16 and wants to have HIS girlfriend spend the night, i have to tell him 'no' too."

We ended up just picking up/dropping off my friend all weekend, and it was never an issue after that.

18. This reminds me of when a dear online friend told a group of us...
"It's snowing outside. Everything is white, and I'm black!" All of us were saying things like that's cool. we won't lose you in the snow then.

19. I can't wait till my cousin comes out.
Edited on Wed Jan-24-07 08:04 AM by Bassic
I always figured that he was just waiting for my very old and conservative grandfather to die before he does it. Granpa died earlier this month, so maybe sometime this year.

I can't wait because it seems to be something he's scared of (duh!), and for most of the family, it's no big deal.

Edit: I should add that besides his father (my uncle) who may be in denial, and my father who is usually quite clueless about this kind of things, everybody knows. It's not bad, it often happens that way.

21. It was like when the SIL came out to me.
That was more like coming out of a plexiglass shower door than a closet.

Good for him, and good for your family!
