Mississippi Nights is closing in St Louis
Sadness...I saw Merle Saunders on his Rainforest tour and Phish at Mississippi Nights. It was a small venue on Laclede's Landing in St Louis. It is being torn down for a stupid casino, like St Louis needs another casino.

1. The last Uncle Tupelo show was there, too.
I would have loved to have been there.

All the good places are getting torn down.

2. Things that make places unique are being
torn asunder.

Why do we show our individuality by dressing alike or making our towns look like other towns?

3. That's why I detest suburbs.
They're called Generica for a reason.

5. Even cities are taking on a more suburban
appearance. Most of the new houses built in the city of St Louis could have been built in many of its suburbs.

6. I think that's a casualty of our mobile society.
People want what's familiar to them in their new home.

8. The Loop had character but now it's just another
destination for the suburbanites (I know technically University City IS a suburb but it's not suburban in the west county sense, which if you live in or around St Louis you will understand what I mean.)

Rents are too high for funky shops to last. More and more chain stores.

I remember going to the Burrito Brothers restaurant and hanging out there all day, talking politics and stuff.

He has the ‘Way Out Club” on Jefferson, at Gravois, has pretty good music their at times so I’ve heard, never been there hope to make it soon though.

12. He and his ex wife owned a book store
called 20th Century Books and Ephemera. I spent MANY a Sunday afternoon there. I bought a first edition of Steal This Book for $10 in the early 90s from them. I was sad to see them go.

Remember the guy who had the pet bird, I think the bird's name was catfood? He ran a store across the street from 20th Century Books.

As Archie and Edith used to sing, "those were the days"

10. Ug....Branson by the River
A hearty welcome to DU donco. There seems to be a regular St. Louis contingent here. Not that I'm really friends w/ anyone on-board or off (no internet for over a year; just back on in last 6-7 weeks; only moved to Belleville IL last spring).

Anyways, hope to see you around the joint.

:hi:

13. Tis true. I think the Pageant is owned in part
by Clear Channel or so I've heard.
