Windows® geeks — how do I change my e-mail default
so that when I click a "mail to" hyperlink it goes to G-mail and not fucking AOL?

I've tried to change it in Control Panel, but the only options are AOL and that dogawful Outlook. :puke:

10. how did you do that
did g mail give you the POP & SMTP addresses?

Unless you download Outlook again and put a default email addresses, it picks the last default you have selected.

4. What did you click on in the control panel?
Mail or Internet Options? Try Internet Options, Programs tab, e-mail drop down.

8. That's what I tried before
I was going on memory. There're more options than just the two, but none are G-mail — probably because it was introduced after this version of Windows.

5. Not possible.
When you click a hyperlink in the browser, IE needs to know what PROGRAM to launch to process the request. You get AOL & Outlook because those are the only two email programs installed on your computer. GMail is a website, not a program on your computer.

Complain to Google. If they'd release a GMail client for Windows, you could do what you're asking.

11. exactly
you need to know the POP & SMTP addresses.

example:

pop1.mail.com
smtp1.mail.com

AOL DOES not do that, and I gather g mail doesn't do it either, so you are limited to the gmail web browser in order to send & receive mail.

9. Suggestion ...

While the GMail notifier method will work, I will gently suggest you go another route and use an e-mail client -- something like Thunderbird -- and configure *it* to use GMail.

18. not to be confused with MS Exchange
Edited on Sat Jan-20-07 02:15 AM by smtpgirl
I am an Active Directory/Exchange girl

I know how internet mail works, POP/SMTP addresses

That was in the day of internet mail, hence my alias of smtpgirl

SMTP Standard Mail Transport Protocol (outgoing mail)

outgoing girl, now you know why I chose that alias: smtpgirl

old ISP stuff, worked for an ISP in the heyday of tech

Not to puff up, but my alias caught wind in the UK, so it took 6 years to copy my alias, oh well, need to find a better alias
