Amsterdam to get statue to honor prostitutes
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Amsterdam's red-light district will soon get a new attraction: a statue to honor prostitutes around the world.

The statue, designed by artist Els Rijerse, will likely be unveiled at the end of March, Dutch news agency ANP reported.

"In many countries, prostitutes struggle and people have no respect for them whatsoever. The statue is meant to give all those men and women strength," Mariska Majoor, a former prostitute who commissioned the statue, told ANP.

ANP said the statue, made of bronze, shows a woman who confidently looks out into the world.

1. wow.
I can't imagine what the world would be like if all of a sudden all the prostitutes and sex workers disappeared. We'd be nuked by tomorrow I bet.

3. Cool. I spent a lot of time in Amsterdam.
Many layovers there when I was a pilot.
Any time we had a new guy on the crew, the first thing he wanted to see was the red light district.
Once I had a 3 day layover, and Miz t. joined me.
The first thing she wanted to see was the red light district.

Had a surreal experience there one night.
We were strolling down a street in the district.
On the right were the 'cribs' with the ladies showing their wares in the big picture windows.
On the left was a big church.
There was a choir singing.
Weird juxtaposition.
