Poll question: Red Heads
There is only a 3-5% of the population that has red hair. It is a recessive trait, and can only be manifested when both parents have red as a recessive gene.

Of course, that doesn't mean there aren't a lot more redheads than nature can account for!

In addition, it is a myth that Ireland produces the most redheads. The percentage from Scotland is far greater at 13%, while the percentage from Ireland is only 10%.

For detailed info, see the Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_hair

So this begs the question: who's a redhead around here?

I confess to being a natural redhead, however I've required a little help from science to keep it red because redheads tend to lose their color at a very young age--I was about 22 when I started getting grey!

6. My question: Where to the Ashkenazi Jewish Redheads come from?
You know, like Woody Allen (and a few friends of mine who are Ashkenazi Russian Jews with red hair)

Last I checked, Moscow was a long ways from Edinborough...

7. I was actually a redhead for awhile.
Boy, does it fade, though. Harder to keep up than blonde, and that's saying something. Hey, I have been every single color it's possible to be, other than green and the like. Ha!

10. I have natural reddish higlights in my hair...
I had strawberry blonde hair as a kid and it got browner as I got older. When I was in my 20s and 30s, it went back to more of a strawberry blonde but a little darker than when I was younger. As I've gotten gray hair, I've hidden it well, but the color I use is extremely close to my natural color. It's a golden reddish light brown. :D

So is my maternal grandfather, my aunt and 3 of her 4 kids. I'm not a redhead but if I dye my hair red it looks natural.

12. My hair is strawberry blonde
I was out-and-out red till I was two, then it changed a bit. It's golden red with the help of the colorist.

14. Lol, funny you should ask. My kid is a redhead. My wife and I aren't.

My wife and I were just talking about this last night. We both have LOTS of readheads in our families. Her dad is a German/Scot redhead, but she is brown eyed and black haired owing to her dominant Native American genes from her moms side. Likewise, I have blue eyes and light brown hair (with a bit of blonde tossed in for interest), but my mom is a fiery Irish redhead. We have three kids: #1 has brown eyes and black hair like mom. #2 has brown eyes and brown hair somewhere between hers and mine. #3 won the genetic lottery and has deep green eyes and red hair. We both had the recessive genes, and #3 just happened to get both of them. When people see my wife, with her black hair, brown eyes, and distinctly native complexion, out with our pasty white, redheaded green eyed son, some simply refuse to believe that he can be hers. We worked it out once, and the odds of it happening were about 4%...unbelievably slim.

15. Red head by choice.
Not ready to let my "natural grey" hair show. When I was younger, though, I had a lot of reddish highlights in my natural haircolor.

16. I'm a natural
redhead--and it has faded but people still have no trouble figuring out that I have red hair with very little grey in it.
Neither of my parents had red hair nor did my siblings. My only offspring doesn't have red hair either.
Supposedly there was red hair on my dad's side of the family.

17. Other: A natural brown but have gone red in the past
I LOVE red hair, but haven't really found the right red for me, if one exists. I'm fair-skinned and freckly, but I'm sorry to say, a bit too cool-toned to pull off most reds.

19. I've been a redhead all my life.
But as I've gotten older, my hair has gotten a shade darker. Or maybe it's because I don't spend so much time in the sun anymore.

21. As a kid I was
my colour was like a copper penny. I would classify that as red.

As a teenager, it became mud brown and my eyebrows turned black.

Now, my hair has a lot of red in it once again (I haven't dyed it in years). When I did dye, the vast majority of the time I chose red.

My grandmother was a redhead (light auburn) and though none of her kids inherited it, some of her grandkids and great grandkids did. My oldest sister had a most beautiful colour of auburn naturally, and two of my other sisters had kids with red hair.
