Song or song lyrics that have deep personal meaning to you...
Edited on Wed Jan-17-07 02:46 AM by idgiehkt
This song is like the story of my flaws, lol. I hear it as the singer having a dialogue with him/herself, or the bad side vs. the good side, even thought that may not be the way the singer intended it. But if I had to pick one song that most accurately described my internal workings, this one would be it. What is yours?

Blues Traveler - Look Around

You'll get no answer from me
About what I want or what I get
Brave enough to speak afraid to see
Confuse the issue til you forget
And I've tried
To finally decide
Why
I'm in your face

And if you can't already tell
I am unable to let things go
I'm told I do it very well
But more important you should know
That all the same
You've got no one to blame
But yourself
If you call that a waste

Cause it ain't me
That's been hurting you inside
And if you've learned
You'll know much more than I
That you're gonna have to go and find it
You'll have to dig beneath the ground
You'll have to unearth every ugly stone
That kept you on your own
And simply put them down
You're gonna have to look around

You'll get no answer from me
About what I get or want I want
That was enough to make her leave
She's not the first one come and gone
And I don't care
Buyer beware
Of me
Cause it might get rough

If you want peace then live alone
If you wanna hide then find a stage
Each a brief but perfect home
To accomodate your rage
And sometimes
In the midst of all my crimes
I feel lost
Or have I lost enough?

Remaining friends
Remind me as they say
It's up to you
The things you throw away
And still you're gonna have to go and find it
You'll have to dig beneath the ground
You'll have to unearth every ugly stone
That's kept you on your own
And simply put them down
You're gonna have to look around

You're gonna have to look around

--------------------------

sorry I can't post a video or performance, I have never been able to find one online. But it's worth listening to, Popper really tears this one up, and the whole CD "Four" is full of insights like this.

1. It's A Fire....
Edited on Wed Jan-17-07 02:39 AM by Southpawkicker
Portishead deep meaning to me! The idea of "I can' breathe through this mask" describes me in my life up to this point in time. This life is a farce. Not anymore. I can breathe. It isn't easy to change your frickin' life, but it's better than living a farce. It's better than breathing through a mask. It's better than being sucked up by things that don't let you be free. It's better than not having a path with heart!

http://play.rhapsody.com/portishead/dummy/itsafire

It's a fire
These dreams they pass me by
This salvation I desire
Keeps getting me down
Cos we need to
Recognise mistakes
For time and again
So let it be known for what we believe in
I can see no reason for it to fail.... ...
Cos this life is a farce
I can't breathe through this mask
Like a fool
So breathe on, sister breathe on
INSTRUMENTAL
From this oneself
Testify or tell
Its fooling us now
So let it be known for what we believe in
I can see no reason for it to fail...
Cos this life is a farce
I can't breathe through this mask
Like a fool
So breathe on, little sister, breathe on
Ohh so breathe on, little sister, like a fool

2. "Anthem" | Leonard Cohen
"Anthem"

The birds they sang
at the break of day
Start again
I heard them say
Don't dwell on what
has passed away
or what is yet to be.
Ah the wars they will
be fought again
The holy dove
She will be caught again
bought and sold
and bought again
the dove is never free.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

We asked for signs
the signs were sent:
the birth betrayed
the marriage spent
Yeah the widowhood
of every government --
signs for all to see.

I can't run no more
with that lawless crowd
while the killers in high places
say their prayers out loud.
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
a thundercloud
and they're going to hear from me.

Ring the bells that still can ring ...

You can add up the parts
but you won't have the sum
You can strike up the march,
there is no drum
Every heart, every heart
to love will come
but like a refugee.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.
That's how the light gets in.
That's how the light gets in.

3. just about anything by woody guthrie
but especially 'ramblin around'

"ramblin round your city,
ramblin round your town,
i never see a face I know
as I go ramblin around boys,
as I go ramblin around

I wish that I could marry,
so I could settle down,
but I can't save a penny
as I go a ramblin around boys,
as I go a ramblin around

my mother prayed that I would be
a man of some renown,
but I am just a railroad bum
as I go a ramblin around boys,
as I go a ramblin around

my sister and my brother
would both be mighty proud
if I could get a job of work
and quit this ramblin around boys,
and quit this ramblin around"

4. And oldie
Simon and Garfunkle's "Patterns". Probably on my mind because I am considering certain patterns in my life that probably need to be broken or at least shaken up a bit.

The night sets softly
With the hush of falling leaves,
Casting shivering shadows
On the houses through the trees,
And the light from a street lamp
Paints a pattern on my wall,
Like the pieces of a puzzle
Or a child's uneven scrawl.

Up a narrow flight of stairs
In a narrow little room,
As I lie upon my bed
In the early evening gloom.
Impaled on my wall
My eyes can dimly see
The pattern of my life
And the puzzle that is me.

From the moment of my birth
To the instant of my death,
There are patterns I must follow
Just as I must breathe each breath.
Like a rat in a maze
The path before me lies,
And the pattern never alters
Until the rat dies.

And the pattern still remains
On the wall where darkness fell,
And it's fitting that it should,
For in darkness I must dwell.
Like the color of my skin,
Or the day that I grow old,
My life is made of patterns
That can scarcely be controlled.

5. I think this song was written for/about me!
Bob Seger's "Beautiful Loser"

He wants to dream like a young man
With the wisdom of an old man
He wants his home and security
He wants to live like a sailor at sea

Beautiful loser
Where you gonna fall?
When you realize, you just can't have it all

He's your oldest and your best friend
If you need him, he'll be there again
He's always willing to be second-best
A perfect lodger, a perfect guest

Beautiful loser
Read it on the wall
And realize
You just can't have it all

You just can't have it all
You just can't have it all
Ohh, ohh, can't have it all

You can try, you can try, but you can't have it all
oh yeah

He'll never make any enemies, enemies, no
He won't complain if he's caught in a freeze
He'll always ask, he'll always say please

Beautiful loser
Never take it all
'Cause it's easier
And faster when you fall

You just don't need it all
You just don't need it all
You just don't need it all
Just don't need it all

6. this has been the song for my life
these last few years, this is my song for my 'crew.' i would not have made it through without them.

'fall back down'
rancid

Don't worry about me, I'm gonna make it alright
Got my enemies crossed out in my sight
I take a bad situation gonna make it right
In the shadows of darkness I stand in the light

You see it's our style to keep it true
I've had a bad year, a lot to go through
I've been knocked out, beat down, black and blue
She's not the one coming back for you
She's not the one coming back for you

If I fall back down, you're gonna help me back up again
If I fall back down, you're gonna be my friend

It takes disaster to learn a lesson
You're gonna make it through the darkest night
Some people betray one and cause treason
We're gonna make everything alright

Well the worst of times, now, they don't phase me
Even if I look and act really crazy
I went way down, she betrayed me
Now my vision is no longer hazy

I'm very lucky to have my crew
They stood by me when she flew
I've been knocked out, beat down, black and blue
She's not the one coming back for you
She's not the one coming back for you

If I fall back down, you're gonna help me back up again
If I fall back down, you're gonna be my friend

7. My dear idg!
This song by Billy Joel has special meaning to me......

I had a lover once who spoke like this to me......

To this day, I cannot hear this song without weeping........

He lives inside me still......

Goodnight my angel
Time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what you've been asking me
I think you know what I've been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Wherever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away

Goodnight my angel
Now its time to sleep
And still so many things I want to say
Remember all the songs you sang for me
When we went sailing out on an emerald bay
And like a boat out on the ocean
I'm rocking you to sleep
The water's dark
And deep inside this ancient heart
You'll always be a part of me

Goodnight my angel
Now it's time to dream
And dream how wonderful your life will be
Someday your child may cry
And if you sing this lullabye
Then in your heart
There will always be a part of me

Someday we'll all be gone
But lullabyes go on and on...
They never die
That's how you
And I
Will be

9. "I See A Darkness"- Wil Oldham
When I'm quietly howling at the moon, this is one song I always play:

Well, you're my friend
And can you see
Many times we've been out drinking
Many times we've shared our thoughts
Did you ever, ever notice, the kind of thoughts I got
Well you know I have a love, for everyone I know
And you know I have a drive, for life I won't let go
But sometimes this opposition, comes rising up in me
This terrible imposition, comes blacking through my mind

And then I see a darkness
Oh no, I see a darkness
Do you know how much I love you
Cause I'm hoping some day soon
You'll save me from this darkness

Well I hope that someday buddy
We'll find peace in our lives
Together or apart
Alone or with our wives
And we can stop our whoring
And pull the smiles inside
And light it up forever
And never go to sleep
My best unbeaten brother
That isn't all I see

And then I see a darkness
Oh no, I see a darkness
Do you know how much I love you
Cause I'm hoping some day soon
You'll save me from this darkness..

17. A New Name For Everything
The Weakerthans

When the bus shelter windows and napkin dispensers suprise,
with distorted reflections it's never the someone you're hoping to recognize,
and the rent is too high living here bewtween reasons to live,
where you can't sleep alone and your memories grown and the borders of night start to give,
when you can't save cash or conviction you're broken you're breaking a tired shoelace or a wave,
so long past past-due, a new name for everything

When the one-ways collude with the map that you folded wrong,
and the route you abandoned is always the path that you probably should be upon,
when the bottle-cap-ashtrays and intimate sears are all full,
with results of your breath and the threads of your fear are unfurled with the tiniest pull
one more time try
stand with your hands and your pockets and stare at the smudge on a newspaper sky
and ask it to rain a new name for everything

Fire every phrase
they don't wanna work
for us anymore
dot and dash our days
make your face the flag
of a semaphore

All you won't show
the boxes you brought here and never unpacked are still patiently waiting to go
So put on those clothes you never grew into
and smile like you mean it for once
If you come back bring a new name for everything

18. When I was a single mom with two small children,
I thought Helen Reddy sang this song just for me and my kids.

You and me against the world
Sometimes it feels like you and me against the world
When all the others turn their back and walk away
You can count on me to stay

Remember when the circus came to town
And you were frightened by the clown?
Wasn't it nice to be around someone that you knew?
Someone who was big and strong and looking out for

You and me against the world
Sometimes it feels like you and me against the world
And for all the times we've cried I always felt that
The odds were on our side

And when one of us is gone
And one of us is left to carry on
Then remembering will have to do
Our memories alone will get us through
Think about the days of me and you
Of you and me against the world

19. "The Living Years", Mike and The Mechanics.
This is essentially the story of me and my dad, though I was fortunate, in that he and I got to make our peace with each other before he passed away. To this day, nearly 30 years after he died, this song brings me to tears.

Mike & The Mechanics - The Living Years

Every generation
Blames the one before
And all of their frustrations
Come beating on your door

I know that i'm a prisoner
To all my father held so dear
I know that i'm a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
I just wish i could have told him in the living years

Crumpled bits of paper
Filled with imperfect thought
Stilted conversations
I'm afraid that's all we've got

You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement
In this present tense
We all talk a different language
Talking in defence

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye

So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
It's the bitterness that lasts

So don't yield to the fortunes
You sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective
On a different day
And if you don't give up, and don't give in
You may just be o.k.

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye

I wasn't there that morning
When my father passed away
I didn't get to tell him
All the things i had to say

I think i caught his spirit
Later that same year
I'm sure i heard his echo
In my baby's new born tears
I just wish i could have told him in the living years

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye

20. "Joey" by Concrete Blonde
This song reminds me of my fathers own battle with alcohol- but from my mothers perspective. To this day, I can't listen to this song without getting choked up.

Joey, baby - don't get crazy
Detours. Fences... I get defensive
I know you've heard it all before -
so I don't say it anymore
I just stand by and let you
fight your secret war.
And though I used to wonder why -
I used to cry till I was dry.
Still sometimes I get a strange pain
inside
Oh, Joey, if you're hurting so am I.

Joey, honey - I've got the money
All is forgiven. Listen, listen
And if I seem to be confused
I didn't mean to be with you.
And when you said I scared you,
well I guess you scared me too.
But we got lucky once before
And I don't wanna close the door
And if you're somewhere out there
passed out on the floor.
Oh Joey, I'm not angry anymore.
<bridge>

and if I seem to be confused
I didn't mean to be with you.
but when you said I scared you,
well I guess you scared me too.
But if its love you're looking for
well i can give a whole lot more
And if you're somewhere out there,
passed out on the floor.
Oh Joey, I'm not angry anymore.

21. it's a perfect song about codependency
I know a lot of people hear it as a love song but you are so right it is about the pain of addiction and how it deforms the people around the addicted person. I think it's one of the most brilliant songs ever written, because it is so sparse; just enough info is given for the listener (or at least someone who has been in that situation) to understand exactly what the situation is, but it manages not to lecture or judge either party. You just feel the hopelessness and desperation. And even though I have been in the 'Joey' role, myself, I can also see that the woman is having both sides of this relationship emotionally as well, because the alcoholic is numbed out. The line that gets to me the most is "All is forgiven. Listen, listen." I feel like I've spent my whole life post-active addiction saying that.

Sorry about your Dad.

23. Someday Never Comes
First thing I remember was askin' papa, "Why?",
For there were many things I didn't know.
And Daddy always smiled; took me by the hand,
Sayin', "Someday you'll understand."

Well, I'm here to tell you now each and ev'ry mother's son
You better learn it fast; you better learn it young,
'Cause, "Someday" Never Comes."

Well, time and tears went by and I collected dust,
For there were many things I didn't know.
When Daddy went away, he said, "Try to be a man,
And, Someday you'll understand."

Well, I'm here to tell you now each and ev'ry mother's son
You better learn it fast; you better learn it young,
'Cause, "Someday" Never Comes."

And then, one day in April, I wasn't even there,
For there were many things I didn't know.
A son was born to me; Mama held his hand,
Sayin' "Someday you'll understand."

Well, I'm here to tell you now each and ev'ry mother's son
You better learn it fast; you better learn it young,
'Cause, "Someday" Never Comes."

Think it was September, the year I went away,
For there were many things I didn't know.
And I still see him standing, try'n' to be a man;
I said, "Someday you'll understand."

Well, I'm here to tell you now each and ev'ry mother's son
You better learn it fast; you better learn it young,
'Cause, "Someday" Never Comes."

24. The Rose by Bette Midler
I see myself in that song.

Some say love it is a river
that drowns the tender reed
Some say love it is a razer
that leaves your soul to blead

Some say love it is a hunger
an endless aching need
I say love it is a flower
and you it's only seed

It's the heart afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance
It's the dream afraid of wakingthat never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken
who cannot seem to give
and the soul afraid of dyingthat never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been too long
and you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winterfar beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed
that with the sun's love
in the spring
becomes the rose

25. I Never Cry | Alice Cooper
If there is a tear on my face
It makes me shiver to the bones
It shakes me, Babe
It's just a heartache that got in my eye
And you know I never cry ,I never cry
Sometimes I drink more than I need
Until the TV's dead and gone
I may be lonely
But I'm never alone
And the night may pass me bay
But I'm never alone
And the night may pass me by
But I'll never cry
Take away, take away my eyes
Sometimes I'd rather be blind
Break a heart, break a heart of stone
Open it up but don't you leave it alone
'Cuz that's all I got to give you
Believe me Babe, it ain't been used
My heart's a virgin, it never been tried
And you know I'll never cry
And you know I'll never cry
And you know I'll never cry
Never cry, I'll never cry
Break a heart, break a heart of stone
Open it up but don't you leave it alone
'Cuz that's all I got to give you
Believe me Babe, it ain't been used
My heart's a virgin, it never been tried
And you know I'll never cry
Never cry

26. Oh No - Gogol Bordello
Sometimes when facing common trouble
When whole town is screwed
We become actually human
Act like prometheus would
Suddenly there is more humor
And a party tabor style
People ringing one another
"Yo man, how was your blackout?"
Suddenly there is more music
Made with the buckets in the park
Girls are dancing with the flashlights
I got only one guitar!
And you see brothers and sisters
All engaged in sport of help
Making merry out of nothing
Like in refugee camp

Oh yeah oh no, it doesn't have to be so
It is possible any time anywhere
Even without any dough
Oh yeah oh no, it doesn't have to be so
Forces of the creative mind are unstoppable!

And you think, all right, now people
They have finally woked up
But as soon as the trouble over
Watch them take another nap
Nobody is making merry
Only trotting scared of boss
Everybody's making hurry
For some old forgotten cause
But one thing is surely eternal
It's condition of a man
Who don't know where he is going
Who don't know where does he stand
Who's dream power is corked bottle
Put away in dry dark place
Who's youth power is well buried
Under propaganda waves
Who's dream life is in opposition
With the life he leads today
Who's beaten down in believing
It just kinda goes this way!
Oh no, it doesn't have to be so
Forces of the creative mind are unstoppable!

27. MacArthur Park
Greatest song ever written, with the most touching and profound lyrics imaginable...

................................................

Spring was never waiting for us, girl
It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance
Between the parted pages and were pressed
In love's hot, fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants

MacArthur Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

I recall the yellow cotton dress
Foaming like a wave
On the ground around your knees
The birds, like tender babies in your hands
And the old men playing checkers by the trees

MacArthur Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

There will be another song for me
For I will sing it
There will be another dream for me
Someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warm
And never let you catch me looking at the sun
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
You'll still be the one

I will take my life into my hands and I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes and I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire
And my passion flow like rivers through the sky
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
I'll be thinking of you
And wondering why

MacArthur Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!
Oh, no
No, no
Oh no!!

28. Okey dokey...for today
Stellar - Incubus

Meet me in outerspace
We could spend the night, watch the earth come up
I've grown tired of that place, wont you come with me
We could start again
How do you do it, make me feel like I do
How do you do it, its better than I ever knew
Meet me in outerspace
I will hold you close, If your afraid of heights
I need you to see this place, It might be the only way
That I can show you how, it feels to be inside of you
How do you it, make me feel like I do
How do you do it, its better than I ever knew
How do you do it, make me feel like I do
Do oh oh oh oh oh
You are stellar
You are stellar
How do you it, make me feel like I do
How do you do it, its better than I ever knew
How do you do it, make me feel like I do
How do you do it, make me feel like I do, Yeah.

I Miss You - Incubus

To see you when I wake up
is a gift I didn't think could be real.
To know that you feel the same as I do
is a three-fold, utopian dream.
You do something to me that I can't explain.
So would I be out of line if I said,
I miss you.
I see your picture, I smell your skin on the empty pillow next to mine.
You have only been gone ten days, but already I'm wasting away.
I know I'll see you again
whether far or soon.
But I need you to know that I care
and I miss you.

Here Without You - 3 Doors Down

A hundred days had made me older
since the last time that I've saw your pretty face

A thousand lights had made me colder and I don’t think I can look at this the same

But all the miles had separate
They disappear now when I’m dreaming of your face

I’m here without you baby
but your still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby
and I dream about you all the time
I’m here without you baby
but your still with me in my dreams
And tonight it’s only you and me

The miles just keep rollin
as the people either way to say hello
I've heard this life is overrated
but I hope that it gets better as we go

I’m here without you baby
but your still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby
and I dream about you all the time
I’m here without you baby
but your still with me in my dreams
And tonight girl it’s only you and me

Everything I know,
and anywhere I go
it gets hard but it won’t take away my love
And when the last one falls,
when it’s all said and done
it get hard but it won’t take away my love

I’m here without you baby
but your still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby
and I dream about you all the time
I’m here without you baby
but your still with me in my dreams
And tonight girl it’s only you and me

29. Two songs for me. today:
White Flag - by Dido

I know you think that I shouldn't still love you
Or tell you that
But if I didn't say it, well I'd still have felt it
Where's the sense in that?

I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder
Or return to where we were

But I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up in surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

I know I left too much mess and destruction
To come back again
And I caused nothing but trouble
I understand if you can't talk to me again
And if you live by the rules of "It's over"
Then I'm sure that that makes sense

But I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up in surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

And when we meet
Which I'm sure we will
All that was there
Will be there still
I'll let it pass
And hold my tongue
And you will think
That I've moved on

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up in surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be...

Everybody's Fool, by Evanescence

Perfect by nature
Icons of self-indulgence
Just what we all need
More lies about a world that

Never was and never will be
Have you no shame? Don't you see me?
You know you've got everybody fooled

Look--here she comes now
Bow down and stare in wonder
Oh, how we love you
No flaws when you're pretending
But now I know she

Never was and never will be
You don't know how you've betrayed me
And somehow you've got everybody fooled

Without the mask
Where will you hide?
You can't find yourself
Lost in your lie
I know the truth now
I know who you are
And I don't love you anymore

It never was and never will be
You don't know how you've betrayed me
And somehow you've got everybody fooled
It never was and never will be
You're not real and you can't save me
And somehow now you're everybody's fool

30. "Ain't Got No" by Nina Simone (my song, mine and mine only :)
I ain't got no home, ain't got no shoes
Ain't got no money, ain't got no class
Ain't got no skirts, ain't got no sweater
Ain't got no perfume, ain't got no bed
Ain't got no mind

Ain't got no mother, ain't got no culture
Ain't got no friends, ain't got no schoolin’
Ain't got no love, ain't got no name
Ain't got no ticket, I ain't got no token
Ain't got no God

And what have I got?
Why am I alive anyway?
Yeah, what have I got?
Nobody can take away.

Got my hair, Got my head
Got my brains, Got my ears
Got my eyes, Got my nose
Got my mouth, I got my smile
I got my tongue, Got my chin
Got my neck, Got my boobs
Got my heart, Got my soul
Got my back, I got my sex

I got my arms, Got my hands
Got my fingers, Got my legs
Got my feet, Got my toes
Got my liver, Got my blood

I've got life
I got my freedom
I've got life

I've got my life
And I'm gonna keep it
I've got my life
And nobody's gonna take it away
I've got life!

31. here are a few
Butterfly .. Weezer
Yesterday I went outside
With my momma's mason jar
Caught a lovely Butterfly
When I woke up today
And looked in on my fairy pet
She had withered all away
No more sighing in her breast
I'm sorry for what I did
I did what my body told me to
I didn't mean to do you harm
But everytime I pin down what I think I want
it slips away - the ghost slips away
I smell you on my hand for days
I can't wash away your scent
if I'm a dog then you're a bitch
I guess you're as real as me
maybe I can live with that
maybe I need fantasy
a life of chasing Butterfly
I told you I would return
When the robin makes his nest
but I ain't never comin' back
I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry
********************************************************

Guitar... Cake

I'm sitting by the,
Window of your,
Thirty-second,
Floor apartment,

Waiting,
For your,
Phone calls,
All to End,

I'm sitting,
watching, wind blow,Watching time go,
Watching cars go by,

I'm,
Waiting for these,
Memories to,
Begin,

If I,
Threw my guitar,
Out the window,
So far down,

Would I,
Start to regret it,
Or would I smile,
And watch it slowly fall, fall, fall,

Garbage trucks,
And taxi cabs,
Don't seem like they can,
Reach me here,

The clammer,
Of jackhammers,
Seems so faint,

Well, the way you treat me,
Like the only,
Slightly brings me down,
Alot

I don't think that I'll,
Ever be the same,

Yeah, If I,
Threw my guitar,
Out the window,
So far down,

Would I,
Start to regret it,
Or would I smile,
And watch it slowly fall, fall, fall,

Fall, fall, fall,
Fall, fall, fall,
Fall, fall, fall...

32. "Bring Me to Life" by Evanescence
My feelings for my husband of 2-1/2 years. He has brought me to higher enlightenments and achievements that I had never reached before, just with him loving and believing in me.
The first man I had been with after 6 years of it just being my daughter and I. Had a terrifying relationship with my daughter's bio father, left him when she was 4 months after he tried to kill me.
My husband has been my rock, my shoulder to cry on, my best friend and lover. Stuck with me through thick and thin with my 9 year old daughter's sudden illness that took her 200 miles away from me, miscarriages, the birth of our son in June and the surprise discovery of being pregnant once again and due in May. He is the best thing that has happened to me and my daughter.

"Bring Me to Life"

How can you see into my eyes like open doors
Leading you down into my core
where I’ve become so numb without a soul my spirit sleeping somewhere cold
until you find it there and lead it back home

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become

now that I know what I’m without
you can't just leave me
breathe into me and make me real
bring me to life

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become

Bring me to life
(I've been living a lie, there's nothing inside)
Bring me to life

frozen inside without your touch without your love darling only you are the life among the dead

all this time I can't believe I couldn't see
kept in the dark but you were there in front of me
I’ve been sleeping a thousand years it seems
got to open my eyes to everything
without a thought without a voice without a soul
don't let me die here
there must be something more
bring me to life

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become

(Bring me to life)
I’ve been living a lie, there’s nothing inside
(Bring me to life)

33. "I am Somebody" by Glenn Jones
Edited on Wed Jan-17-07 12:46 PM by Lurking_Argyle
(Radio edit)

I am Somebody, somebody

1) I woke up one morning
And saw the handwriting on the wall
Time was passing me by so fast
I wasn't moving at all
So I looked in the mirror
And said to myself
"To live in this world,
You've got to believe in yourself." (believe in yourself)

Chorus:
I am Somebody, somebody
And the Universe is mine
I am Somebody, somebody
And the world belongs to me

I am Somebody, (somebody)
And the Universe is mine
I am Somebody, (somebody)
And the world belongs to me.

(Repeat)

2) When I realized
That it was me
My life began to change
There was nothing I couldn't be
If you're listening to this song
And your life is going wrong
Just look in the mirror
And sing this magic song

Chorus:

Bridge: Life is a mystery
Oh, a game to be played, yeah
But if I'm to win at all, my friend
It's only for me to say...

Chorus:

A really great song. This is the first of my personal anthems. I still have the 12" single.

34. Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell
Rows and Flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And ribbon canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way

but now they only block the sun
they rain and they snow on everyone
so many things I could have done
but clouds got in the way

I've looked at clouds, from both sides now
from up and down, and still somehow
it's cloud's illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way that you feel
as every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way

but now it's just another show
you leave them laughing when you go
and if you care, don't let them know
don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
from give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
to say I love you right out loud
schemes and dreams and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They turn their heads, they say I've changed
but something's lost and something's gained
in living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now
from up and down, and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all.

35. Birches
Edited on Wed Jan-17-07 02:11 PM by Dyedinthewoolliberal
by Bill Morrisey- brings a tear to my eye every damn time I hear it!

Birches

Birches
(Bill Morrissey)

They sat at each end of the couch, watched as the fire burned down,
So quiet on this winter's night, not a house light on for miles around.
Then he said, "I think I'll fill the stove. it's getting time for bed."
She looked up, "I think I'll have some wine. how 'bout you?" She asked and he de
clined.

"Warren," she said, "maybe just for tonight,
Let's fill the stove with birches and watch as the fire burns bright.
How long has it been? I know it's quite a while.
Pour yourself half a glass. Stay with me a little while."

And Warren, he shook his head, as if she'd made some kind of joke.
"Birches on a winter night? no, we'll fill the stove with oak.
Oak will burn as long and hot as a July afternoon,
And birch will burn itself out by the rising of the moon.

"And you hate a cold house, same as me. Am I right or not?"
"All right, all right, that's true," she said. "It was just a thought,
'Cause," she said, "Warren, you do look tired. Maybe you should go up to bed.
I'll look after the fire tonight." "Oak," he told her. "Oak," she said.

She listened to his footsteps as he climbed up the stairs,
And she pulled a sweater on her, set her wineglass on a chair.
She walked down cellar to the wood box -- it was as cold as an ice chest --
And climbed back up with four logs, each as white as a wedding dress.

And she filled the stove and poured the wine and then she sat down on the floor.
She curled her legs beneath her as the fire sprang to life once more.
And it filled the room with a hungry light and it cracked as it drew air,
And the shadows danced a jittery waltz like no one else was there.

And she stood up in the heat. She twirled around the room.
And the shadows they saw nothing but a young girl on her honeymoon.
And she knew the time it would be short; the fire would start to fade.
She thought of heat. She thought of time.
And called it an even trade...........
Sung by Bill Morrissey on "Night Train," Philo, PH 1154, 1993.

37. Ellis Paul's "Last Call"
Last Call
from the album Stories

You said, "Don't wait up, don't count the minutes."
So here I am watching paint fade from the walls.
On the TV, planes are dancing to the national anthem,
So the whole world knows it's long past last call.
I sat through Tarzan swinging through the jungle,
And Godzilla crushing buildings and all.
The light from this TV can make it all look so easy.
It makes this room feel incredibly small.

Last call, last call.
Now I've heard it all.
The excuses get weaker as the stories get tall.
You step off with the wrong foot, the drunk fool at the ball.
Well, I'm not up for dancing.
I'm up past last call.

Clock keeps on talkin'.
It says, "Fool go to bed --
Why waste the words, they've already been said."
But I can't shut my eyes with this face in my head,
So tonight I plan on clearing my mind.

I could lay my head in the arms of the sofa,
And wait for headlights to roll across these walls.
But when your key finds the door, your feet find the floor,
They'll be greeted by empty rooms and empty halls.

41. Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce and White Flag by Dido
Edited on Thu Jan-18-07 03:23 AM by QMPMom
Makes me wonder what could have been if a certain event hadn't happened. I remember the exact day, moment and place when "he" went over to the jukebox and played that song and then just stood there and stared at me. But, we were 17 and, well, he died. ;(

Jim Croce
Time In A Bottle

If I could save Time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save every day
'Til Eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I'd save every day like a treasure and then,
Again, I would spend them with you

CHORUS:
But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go
Through time with

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty
Except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you

And then there's White Flag by Dido

It is sort of myhusband's and my song. We were in Skagway, Alaska and had taken off from the motel to get away from our kids and my parents. We needed some alone time so we used the excuse of needing to gas up the van and headed for the Red Onion Saloon - an old Goldrush Brothel that has been turned into a bar/museum. We shared a pizza and had some wine and this song was playing. We've weathered some rough times in our almost 22 year long marriage and this song is our survival song.

White Flag
by Dido

I know you think that I shouldn't still love you
Or tell you that
But if I didn't say it, well I'd still have felt it
Where's the sense in that?

I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder
Or return to where we were

But I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up in surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

I know I left too much mess and destruction
To come back again
And I caused nothing but trouble
I understand if you can't talk to me again
And if you live by the rules of "It's over"
Then I'm sure that that makes sense

But I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up in surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

And when we meet
Which I'm sure we will
All that was there
Will be there still
I'll let it pass
And hold my tongue
And you will think
That I've moved on

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up in surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be...

42. Not A Pretty Girl- Ani Difranco
I am not a pretty girl
that is not what I do
I ain't no damsel in distess
and I don't need to be rescued
so put me down punk
maybe you'd prefer a maiden fair
isn't there a kitten stuck up a tree somewhere

I am not an angry girl
but it seems like I've got everyone fooled
every time I say something they find hard to hear
they chalk it up to my anger
and never to their own fear
and imagine you're a girl
just trying to finally come clean
knowing full well they'd prefer you
were dirty and smiling

and I am sorry
I am not a maiden fair
and I am not a kitten stuck up a tree somewhere

and generally my generation
wouldn't be caught dead working for the man
and generally I agree with them
trouble is you gotta have youself an alternate plan
and I have earned my disillusionment
I have been working all of my life
and I am a patriot
I have been fighting the good fight
and what if there are no damsels in distress
what if I knew that and I called your bluff?
don't you think every kitten figures out how to get down
whether or not you ever show up

I am not a pretty girl
I don't want to be a pretty girl
no I want to be more than a pretty girl

43. Hurt, by Johnny Cash.
I seem to be getting more and more sad lately.... and this song just shows how I feel.

I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
upon my liar's chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stains of time
the feelings disappear
you are someone else
I am still right here

what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

if I could start again
a million miles away

44. This one hit me like a ton of bricks
ftp://209.94.123.199/Audio/Donna/20030919/2-08ConsciousEvolution.mp3

Chorus:
Conscious evolution in front of your eyes
Conscious evolution in the back of your mind
Conscious evolution go on spread the word
We're all busy learning on a learning curve

Wounded in the battle lying in the weeds
Immersed in contemplation of history's evil deeds
He offered up to free will, free will flatly replied
Conscious evolution's all there is on your side

Conscious evolution its what turns me on
There's got to be a difference between right & wrong
All down through the ages struggling with the same thing
With a vision bold as love won't you help me sing

Man is just an animal the scientists say
For the sins of the father the son must pay
Jesus said to Buddha give Mohammed a call
Conscious evolution is the writing on the wall

Changed my life,this song did.

45. Pearl Jam - "Better Man"
Especially the live version when Eddie says "This song goes out the the bastard who married my momma"....

Waitin, watchin the clock, its four oclock, its got to stop
Tell him, take no more, she practices her speech
As he opens the door, she rolls over...
Pretends to sleep as he looks her over
She lies and says shes in love with him, cant find a better man...
She dreams in color, she dreams in red, cant find a better man...
Cant find a better man (2x)
Ohh...

Talkin to herself, theres no one else who needs to know...
She tells herself, oh...
Memories back when she was bold and strong
And waiting for the world to come along...
Swears she knew it, now she swears hes gone
She lies and says shes in love with him, cant find a better man...
She dreams in color, she dreams in red, cant find a better man...
She lies and says she still loves him, cant find a better man...
She dreams in color, she dreams in red, cant find a better man...
Cant find a better man (2x)
Yeah...

She loved him, yeah...she dont want to leave this way
She feeds him, yeah...thats why shell be back again
Cant find a better man (3x)
Cant find a better...man...
Ohh...ohh...
Uh huh... (5x)
Ohh...

48. Here are two that always seems to haunt me...
Especially recently dealing with some inner demons of my own.

Twisted Sister - "I Believe In You"

Why does no one seem to understand
That it's more than love i need
It's so hard to keep your faith alive
When nobody else believes
Oh i need someone there for me
Need someone who can see
Need someone to show me
Ohhhh, that they are there to help me fight
If i fall, to set me right
Someone there to hold the light
Won't someone say

I believe in you
I believe in you
I believe in you
I believe in you

It's so hard to do it all yourself
Fighting for your dreams alone
When the toy's upon the highest shelf
A child's tears soon become stone
Oh why does no one lend a hand
Why does no one understand
Why i need to make a stand
Ohhhh,it's so hard to carry on
When all your hope is gone
All your dreams have come undone
I need to hear

I believe in you
I believe in you
I believe in you
I believe in you

Why won't someone say these words
Are they really so absurd?
Must they always go unheard?
Ohhhh, if someone needed the light
I'd be there to help them fight
If they fell, i'd set them right
And then i'd say

I believe in you
I believe in you
I believe in you
I believe in you
I believe in you
Won't someone say i believe in you
I believe in you
Won't someone say i believe in you
I need to hear i believe in you
I believe in you

Poe - "Spanish Doll"

This place feels so unfamiliar
And yet I know it well
I think I used to belong here
But the only way I can tell
Is that I miss you still
And I cannot find you here
You left me tattered and torn
Just like that spanish doll

(sweet spanish sweet spanish... doll)

I went down to the alley way
(sierra la bonita)
And found that you were gone
Spanish doll: si nunca tes fueres (if you had never left)
You left no word no message
I still dont know what went wrong
Spanish doll: la grima (tears)
But now no matter where I go
I always seem to return
Spanish doll: busca me (find me)
To where you left me tattered and torn
Spanish doll: you so rompido mi muneca (I am torn my sweet doll)

Just like that sweet spanish doll

(sweet spanish sweet spanish...doll)

A memory guilded in red and gold
Spanish doll: del oro (of gold also pain)
Beauty guarded and never sold
Spanish doll: cuida me (protect me)
I keep it with me wherever I go
And I love you still
No matter how a story will unfold
Spanish doll: requerda me (remember me)
You know I always will
Have part of you here
In this souvenir
This sweet spanish doll

A stranger in this world without you
Is all that I can ever be
All I know thats pure and clear
You left it with me here
In this souvenir
This sweet spanish doll

49. A few of mine ...
Windmills -- Toad the Wet Sprocket

I spend too much time raiding windmills
We go side by side
Laughing until its right

Theres something that you wont show
Waiting where the light goes
Take the darkest hour-break it open
Water to repair what we have broken

Theres something that you wont show
Waiting where the light goes
And anyway the wind blows
Its all worth waiting for

Pull on the borders to lighten the load
Tell all the passengers were going home

I spend too much time seeking shelter
World without end couldnt hold her

Theres something that you wont show
Waiting where the light goes
And anyway the wind blows
Its all worth waiting for
Anyway the wind blows

Take This Longing -- Leonard Cohen

Many men have loved the bells
you fastened to the rein,
and everyone who wanted you
they found what they will always want again.
Your beauty lost to you yourself
just as it was lost to them.
Oh take this longing from my tongue,
whatever useless things these hands have done.
Let me see your beauty broken down
like you would do for one you love.

Your body like a searchlight
my poverty revealed,
I would like to try your charity
until you cry, "Now you must try my greed."
And everything depends upon
how near you sleep to me

Just take this longing from my tongue
all the lonely things my hands have done.
Let me see your beauty broken down
like you would do for one your love.

Hungry as an archway
through which the troops have passed,
I stand in ruins behind you,
with your winter clothes, your broken sandal straps.
I love to see you naked over there
especially from the back.

Oh take this longing from my tongue,
all the useless things my hands have done,
untie for me your hired blue gown,
like you would do for one that you love.

You're faithful to the better man,
I'm afraid that he left.
So let me judge your love affair
in this very room where I have sentenced
mine to death.
I'll even wear these old laurel leaves
that he's shaken from his head.

Just take this longing from my tongue,
all the useless things my hands have done,
let me see your beauty broken down,
like you would do for one you love.

Like you would do for one you love.
