Colorado Rockies To Hold "Faith Day" At Ballpark - ("Faith" = Christian)
<snip>

The Rev. George McHendry and 50 of his flock at the First Congregational Church of Eastlake plan to extend their worship at Coors Field one Sunday this summer.
The church is one of many across the Denver area invited to "Faith Day" at the ballpark.

The Colorado Rockies for the past two seasons have hosted "Christian Family Day," offering church groups discounted tickets and putting on post-game shows featuring Christian bands and testimonials from Christian players and coaches.

The team has not publicized the events beyond church circles, so most fans may not have noticed.

The Rockies have scheduled this year's promotion for the July 29 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers and have changed the name in an apparent effort to make it more inclusive. While the team has put a new label on the day, it's unclear whether it will alter the content. The Rockies are still ironing out the details.

Sports teams increasingly are using faith days - by faith, they usually mean Christian - as marketing tools to fill the seats.

The Rockies are not alone. The St. Louis Cardinals, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds and Texas Rangers are among the baseball clubs doing a variation on the theme, along with many minor-league teams.

1. That's just Wrong...
I have no problem with someone's faith but...I dunno. Rox are kinda hinky that way anyhow, though. There was some stink last year about the club's stance on the subject. Air Force Academy had a major stink with their baseball team, too...REQUIRING their players to be Christian, if I'm not mistaken. Gazette ran a feature on it not too long ago.

9. They did and no one came because...
...everyone realized that there is no reason to watch other people play ball.

14. But are they a come from behind team???
I'm an atheist, but you can be a Buddhist atheist, so I'd bring my mala (prayer beads) and start chanting mantras to annoy them.

3. A lot of teams do this sort of thing
Funny I just saw a banner for "Lesbian friendly getaways" from Orbitz. Disney, of course, has gay weekends at DisneyWorld.

Baseball teams do this for midweek games. It is a great way to make sure of selling seats.

4. Loved the old Businessmen's Special at the Vet in the 80's.
Usually a wednesday afternoon Phillies game. Practically the whole command would shut down and since the Vet was not far from the Navy Base we'd walk to the game. Military personnel could get into Phillies games for a buck (cheap seats.)

5. the Rockies (the worst-run franchise in baseball)
*need* to pray

They are a nest of bible-thumping idiots. O'Dowd's collection of reject "quadruple-A" utility players will need divine intervention to win 60 games this year.

11. Doesn't help
When the Giants had the "God Squad" in the late '70s, they also had a run of seasons like 70-92.

Clearly, Dog is a rugby fan.

16. Meh. Keeps them off the street, and away from my front door, for a day.
I got no problem with a team marketing to a specific group. They do it for the military, for various businesses and industries, to children, etc. As long as these teams are only welcoming these groups, and not providing a platform for them to preach from, more power to them. I'm sure Christian money spends as well as other people's money.

18. We heathen should invade their day. We could
Chant, burn incense, dress as Harry Potter characters, and other pagan type dress. We could really fuck them up. It could be a riot. :D

20. Yeah, but at least you'd get to watch
the Dodgers, too. So there is an upside.

Heh...whenever we go up to Coors, it ain't to watch the Rox, it's to watch the other team.
