(NYC saavy DU-ers)I need to find a decent upper west side hotel
for the week of September 22nd...preferably below $140 a night.
Any recommendations?
Both the Empire on 63rd and Comfort Inn on 71st are suspiciously OFF the AAA list...if that is any indication.

1. You might look into
the Olcott @ 72th and Central Park West...I think it's just over $100 a night, and while a bit "lived in" it's apparently clean and cozy. An out-of-town friend stays there everytime he comes to NYC and he swears by it.

has some good bargains. I just stayed at the Gramercy Park Hotel for $89 and my room had high-speed internet. Also try http://www.express-res.com/

Did you check out the Lucerne? It's a cheapie on the UWS.

I usually don't stay on the Upper West Side-too far uptown for me. Are you doing business up there?

4. Stayed at the Comfort Inn last June
 It wasn't spectacular-but it was clean, newly furnished, well air conditioned, plenty of hot water, etc. Staff was pleasant. Parking was a block away in a lot-there was a discount with front desk validated receipt.

We were there overnight for a Lincoln Center affair.

Depends upon what your needs are.

5. On the Ave
I just left Manhattan after 13 years. Still go back monthly.
Stayed here in may and was fairly pleased.
Has kind of a "Metropolitan Home" look to it.
I really dig the location - good for wandering, late food, good grocery stores, H&H bagels, Central Park and so on.
Since it isnn't my home nabe it made NYC feel vacationy to me.

I got a great rate via travelocity but it varies.
You might try the hotel's corp site for better deals. Also be sure and call rezzies directly.
Ask 'em if they can't do any better than whatever they quote you.
That usually lands you an unpublished discount.

On the Ave
2178 Broadway at about 74th St
New York, NY 10024

6. My needs are few...
since it's just a tourist trip (Gothamites! are there any decent used bookstores left in Manhattan? Boston wonders?:)
Clean, quiet, "low maintenance"....cable teevee and hot water.
I'm sufficiently bourgeois to get suspicious when a hotel can't be founds in the AAA guide.
I'll look into all the above suggestions though...
Thanks!
Keep em' comin'!

7. Do you have to stay on the UWS?
I have stayed at many other hotels and can give you lots of suggestions in midtown and downtown.

I am a Boston person and love New York (except for the Yankees). There are some great bargain stores in NYC, so if you need any suggestions, let me know!

8. I've seen Empire rooms, and they seemed pretty nice to me.
One the Ave (recommended above) looks like a nice hotel from the outside. You could also try the Beacon, next to the Beacon theatre.

Here's an excellent Web page for your purposes:
