Please HELP an ipod virgin!!! Where do YOU download music for your ipod??
Just got my first ipod, went online to see if there's a cheaper way to go than itunes, and got totally confused by the "free" services (which are all about $35-$40).

Are they legal, virusless, clean sounding, etc.?

Is itunes better?

Where do you get your music?

Any advice appreciated! :hi:

1. I really like iTunes.
.99 a song, but sometimes downloading whole cds is just 9.99 or less.

3. Limewire
http://www.limewire.com/english/content/home.shtml

Absolutely free, unless you upgrade. Good quality, click and drag to iTunes then onto the iPod.

4. Seconded!
Neat search options as well. For example, type in Hard Day's Night and you'll get the original Beatles tune, as well as perhaps some neat covers of the tune. Found a great acoustic live version of Billy Idol doing "Rebel Yell," etc etc. Your access to tunes will vary depending upon what other users are logged on at the time, so repeating unsuccessful searches can sometimes yield what you're looking for.

---One caveat: as it is file-sharing, and many users supply the info (ie title, artist) for selections, there are sometimes mis-attributions. Classical music is especially prone to this...some folks think that anything with violins and sans singers is by "Mozart" (or even "Motzart".) :)

5. I use iTunes only...
its pretty good to use to rip CD's you already have and download to your iPod. Plus easy for subscribing to podcasts.

7. I have a question for you: I too just got an iPod and am trying to
get my CDs (that I made) onto it. When I download the playlist, the songs are identified as Song#1, Song#2, etc., so I have to retype the track titles in. That's not the problem; I can't figure out how to rename the tracks. Double clicking doesn't work, and there's no 'rename' function when I right-click. Any suggestions?

11. I imagine, because I made the CD years ago, the tunes
aren't recognized. If I installed a store-bought CD, I suspect that would work. I think. I just got it today, a nano, and it comes w/absolutely NO instructions. Found some online in .pdf format so DH will be copying it Monday. I'm on my own til then.:(

15. You're close; don't double-click, though.
Highlight the song you want to rename, and then click once more (not a double click). That should make the field editable for you.

I. LOVE. My. iPod.

Now I've gotta check out LimeWire...how did I not know about this?

16. Thank you so much! I've been pulling my hair out!
That worked! One more question: I'm dragging the tunes into the library; does that mean they're getting transposed in there to an iPod format?
Again, thank you!

17. I don't think they go through a conversion process.
I think they're still mp3 files when you import them to iTunes. I think.

Glad that worked!

20. iTunes only finds the names of songs from commercial CDs
If you are loading in CDRs of compilations that you've made, there is no way for iTunes to know what the songs are.

When you put in a commercially manufactured disc, it will go online and search the CDDB (Compact Disc Data Base), and will pull in all of the song titles, artist name, and album title into the correct places in iTunes.

19. I use iTunes as well,
for the same purposes...it's the best one for me for all of those reasons. I was responding from the standpoint of acquiring new music selections. I agree though...iTunes is damned handy, one great system for me.

6. I use the Internet(s)

Actually, I use Limewire and bittorrents with the client, Azureus.

Torrent Search Engine: http://torrentscan.com/

Remember to only use this knowledge for good. I'm not telling you to download pirated music. Are we clear on how I'm not telling you to do that?

9. Please think twice before dowloading from music "sharing" sites...
As a working independant musician, I'd like to ask that you consider the plight of the musician before deciding to not pay for your music. Of course the major labels are screwing artists at every turn, but there are plenty of musicians out there who are just trying to make enough to pay for the cost of recording, touring, and promoting their music. Likewise, there are plenty of artists who are trying to prove their worth to labels that they have signed to, and sales is a major indicator of whether or not they will be dropped from the label that signed them.

If you like music, please support the musicians.

Thanks and have fun.

I'm not picky. I do have ITunes, but only to convert my files to my IPod's.
