1. If you've got a Volkswagen now, don't do it!
They weren't kidding about this. Those cars were sealed unbelievably well. They were sealed SO well that if you didn't keep at least one window open a crack, slamming a door would cause a piece of glass to pop out...which is why in 1970, Volkswagen added the little black vents behind the back side windows to vent the interior and keep the glass in.

These days, most Volkswagens are "ventilated" via holes in the floorpans.

there was an incident at university of richmond a while back.
a girl tried to drive through a flooded creek and got washed into
the lake. her vw floated across the lake, under the commons and
over a banked/damn where it finally stopped.
