Arkansas rain, Oklahoma ice
I'm enroute to Tracy, CA from Columbus, GA. Yeah, the ole I 40.
Tonight, I'm holed up in Alma, AR. Raining like hell, but just
a few miles west----ice. A driver's worst nightmare. You're driving
along in rain, and suddenly, BAM, you routinely move the steering
wheel and the vehicle spins out of control. Black ice claims another
victim. I chose to ride out the storm here in AR. I may be here awhile,
but I'll live to tell about it. Hey, I got Net access, DirecTV, cell
phone, and (drum roll, please) it's a WET COUNTY!!!!!!! :toast:

1. Hey Liberal Trucker!
welcome to Arkansas

nasty night out there isn't it?

I'm in Ft. Smith

hope the ice stays west, but it may move this way as the night progresses. Supposed to get down to 31 tonight here.

2. You found a wet county in AR?
Edited on Sat Jan-13-07 02:28 AM by RoyGBiv
You're charmed. :-)

Do not ... I repeat ... do not drive west on I-40 from where you are. I know the news and everybody else, including your own good sense, is telling you that, but I'll repeat it for emphasis.

I watched in horror, in my rear-view mirror, as a truck slid and then rolled over down an embankment today, and this was before it got bad. Road crews were at least prepared for it, and salt and sand are being spread liberally, but the ice keeps falling. Not fit for man nor beast out there tonight ... or tomorrow. It's 19 in OKC right now, according to my thermometer outside, and it's not expected to get up out of the 20's until next week.

I'm just hoping the power lines hold out. Gotta give it to the power crews out today, though. They went into turbo mode with preventative maintenance. All the trees around where I live that typically take out power lines during ice storms got a crew cut yesterday and today.

8. Hehe ...

Most counties here are frozen. :-)

Guess it's been awhile since I did much searching for a drink in AR. Guess I should have realized it. I saw a liquor store in Eureka Springs last summer.

12. Sleet here so far ...

Sleet isn't quite as bad as the freezing rain as far as it breaking things is concerned. The worry is tomorrow, but at the moment, it looks like the freezing rain will go a bit south of where I am. People in my old home town are gonna get hammered, though.

Here's to hoping the freeze line stays away from you. Looks really close right now, but it seems to have hovered there most of the evening.

15. That's just bizarre to me ...

Thunder and lightning on the edge of an ice storm.

Did that earlier today in OKC also. I haven't seen that much.

10. I'll be good ...

I have candles, plenty of batteries, food I don't have to cook, and I dug out all the blankets.

Plus I have a 10,000 BTU cat who is doing his duty and keeping us both warm at the moment.

It'll just suck not being able to get online if the power goes.

Take care of yourself.

16. LT is safe and will remain so
There's a saying:
There are old truckers and there are bold truckers,
but there are no old, bold truckers. Hey, something,
sooner or later, is gonna make me tip over, but not
if I can help it!
