Drunk Mail Carrier Crashes Mail Truck Into Street Sign

Waukesha - "Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night" will stop a mail carrier - but intoxication might.

A mail carrier has been taken off his route after he was accused of being drunk on the job - with nearly four times the legal blood-alcohol level - and crashing his postal delivery truck into a sign.

Thomas Lahiff, 46, was arrested Friday after he returned to the post office from delivering mail. He was incoherent, bleeding from his hands and at one point collapsed, police Capt. Mike Babe said. Police and an ambulance were called to the post office at 300 E. Broadway just before 1 p.m.

After failing a field sobriety test, a preliminary breath test was given and indicated Lahiff's blood-alcohol level was 0.31, well above the limit of 0.08 that's considered evidence of intoxication, Babe said. The Town of Waukesha man was taken to Waukesha Memorial Hospital, where a blood sample was taken. He was not seriously injured.

If convicted, this would be Lahiff's first drunken driving offense, according to the state Division of Motor Vehicles. He was involved in a property damage accident on March 10, 2006, and was given a ticket for speeding on July 4, 2006.
