But they have a better selection in Germany than they do in USA. Seems that they know Americans will eat just about anything, so they don't bother to send the good stuff over here.

12. I LOVE beets!
But they have to be fresh, not canned. Here's my most recent recipe. It's great and very easy, and of course very yummy.

Grated Beets with Shallots

3 T olive oil
½ teaspoon whole brown or yellow mustard seeds
2 large shallots, peeled and cut into fine slivers
1 fresh hot green chile, cut crosswise on a sharp diagonal into thin slices
1 pound beets, peeled and coarsely grated
1 teaspoon salt
1 T fresh lemon juice

Put the oil in a wide pan or a large frying pan and set over medium-high heat. When hot, put in the mustard seeds. As soon as the mustard seeds begin to pop, a matter of seconds put in the shallots and green chili. Stir and fry for 30 seconds. The shallots should turn a little brown. Now put in the beets and stir for a minute. Put in the sale and ½ cup of water. Bring to a boil. Cover, turn the heat to low, and cook gently for 10 minutes. Uncover, turn the heat up to medium, and add the lemon juice. Stir to mix and turn off the heat.

Serves four.

38. We might have to
pass on the key lime pie. We'll see how much we behave otherwise. The stew I made the other day is TOTALLY not fattening. You could eat the whole pot and not have to fast. Of course, if you decide to eat biscuits with it, that's another story.

Borscht is fattening? I'll have to look up the recipe. And the fondue would be fine if we did the boullion one. We have ways ... we will NOT gain weight this time! :D

41. I used to hate them
with the exception of borscht.

However, I did have a wonderful beet salad over the holidays, so I might rethink my position. It'll never be my favourite veggie by a longshot, but they could be pleasantly edible occasionally.

Pickled beets will ALWAYS be :puke: in my book.

This thread made me realize I had about a dozen beets in the fridge, so into the oven they went: beets, garlic, olive oil, fresh rosemary, salt, pepper. If I wasn't on a diet, I'd add a little panceta.
