Grammar Rant: Can the pundits stop calling Pelosi the first WOMAN speaker?
She is the first FEMALE speaker.

WOMAN is a noun, not an adjective. It is a pet peeve of mine, like fingernails on a chalk board.

Thanks for listening.

2. Agreed.
The "she" does cover the gender, but does not get to the historic aspect of being the first "she."

McLaughlin just said "first woman speaker." That guy usually has decent grammar. Aargh! Stop it.

3. As a woman
part of me is okay with it even if it is grammatically incorrect. The word woman seems to give it more power than female would.

That being said, one wouldn't say Dennis Hastert is the last man Speaker of the House, would one?

4. Here's a great sentence I'd love to hear in say, 2030:
In 2007, Dennis Hastert stepped down as Speaker of the House. He was the last man, and the last Republican, to serve as Speaker of the House.

Yeah, I see what people are trying to do with the "woman Speaker" thing. But, as a woman myself, I am not afraid of the word female. And I do decry the dumbing down of the language. **Old Fogey Moment** We can and should learn the difference between nouns and adjectives.

5. Yes, they could just call Pelosi...
the first woman serving as Speaker of the House, or some variation of that.
