The RetroLounge Daily Poem Thread (Sun 1/7/07)
Thirst

When the rain shies north
to nest among tulips and firs,
you may be sure it abhors
the gun and the gun emplacement,
the scarred soil, the lip of the exit,
the stone stairs going down.

Rain searches for a house
tilted only so much.
It will approach the eave and the gutter,
thinking its way forward, cones and leaves
twisting like coins in its fingers.

Rain is hardly the impartial
dew of justice. It chooses.
Now it is falling on you
because you are thirsty and for no other reason.
It has brought us together
under a low roof, the wind outside
to remind us of dusty places,
an orchard of withered oranges
and a soldier dead in the sand.

E. G. Burrows

3. I remember visiting
the beaches of Normandy. The gun emplacements and bunkers still there, after all these years.

That poem gave me a chill.

6. My dear Retro...........
Nice......vivid imagery!

I especially like how it starts in a more general way....

And then comes down to:

It has brought us together
under a low roof, the wind outside
to remind us of dusty places,
an orchard of withered oranges
and a soldier dead in the sand.

The particular......of us!

Beautiful, just beautiful!

Thank you......
