I need to stay up all night tonight
I'm trying to get a 3rd shift sleep pattern down for when I start my new 3rd shift job on Monday night. Last night I was able to make it to 3AM before I crashed. I also took some wicked cold medicine last night and that probably got the better of me. I'm feeling better now. I slept until 2PM today. No cold medicine tonight. I need to stay up until about 7AM EST. Who's going to stay up with me and help me make it until dawn? :donut:

2. Alright
I'll try to come up with some good threads tonight.

I know for certain that lack of sleep will catch up to you, though, unless you are suffering from long term insomnia. If I've not been getting enough sleep I'll have a night where I'll sleep 12 hours eventually.

3. Maybe you need
something to...tire you out, this late at night. Might work off any extra ENERGY you have. Maybe a little PHYSICAL ACTIVITY would assist you.

What? Jeez.

5. Hey, Droopy.......
I won't be up till dawn, but I will be up for the next 5 to 6 hours....

It's the best I can do!

Later on, if you really need to be awake, you can call me......

Or I can call you, if you prefer!

Good luck staying awake!

6. Thanks, Peggy
I really do need to stay up. As you know I drive for a living. I won't drive when I'm too tired, but I'd really hate to be late getting to where I need to go on my first night on the job.

8. Oh man, I remember working third shift hours. My sleep patterns got so messed up, I'd get home a
little before 8am and then I'd want to be normal and stuff, so I'd end up staying up with my wife and do errands and such. It would kill me after a few days of that routine. Although I really loved working the third shift, it was so quiet and peaceful, no office politics or anything like that. *sigh*

10. I hear you
It's really important for me to get enough rest and to get rest at the right time seeing as how I drive for a living. I'm single with no kids so I don't have other obligations.

12. Yeah, but part of you is going to want to stick to a "normal" schedule, something inside
you just refuses to go to sleep while it's sunny out. I'm pretty much an insomniac, so I have a hard time sleeping anyways. I do miss making my 2am Dunkin Donut runs for the department!

16. One hint for your new schedule: buy and use a Sleep Mask.

I'm serious. A good one will keep out that nasty daylight that is the enemy of night shift workers' attempts to sleep diurnally.

This is a comfortable and durable one I've used with great success:

I never travel without it.

17. Thanks for the tip
I'll look into that. I do have some blinds in my bedroom that are pretty effective in keeping out the light, but the sun still creeps in a little bit.

11. Not that kind of "up"!
:D

I think you have to go see a doctor if you stay up for more than four hours with that kind of "up."

15. Normal 3rd shift hours are 11pm to 7am
There are some variations, but it is usually the "graveyard" shift where people work through the wee hours of the morning.

Do you work nights or do you just enjoy staying up?

20. Have you worked graveyards before?
I'm always curious how people do it - I work at a 24 hour store and there are people there who've worked graves for years - I don't know how they do it.

I worked 'em for about a year at one time and I NEVER got used to it. I couldn't sleep for more than a couple of hours at a time during the day and I always felt brain-dead and sleep-deprived. On my off days, I'd get a good night's sleep but that would throw me off all over again.

But some people adapt to them really well. Good luck to you. :hi:

21. Sort of
I just quit a job team driving cross country. That required some night driving. I would usually have to stop for an hour or two, though, and get a nap.
