I posted this in GD a couple days ago, but I know some of you don't get out much, so here's your chance. Northern Dynasty, a Canadian mining company, has been developing plans for a monstrous gold and copper strip mine (the Pebble Mine) in the headwaters of the streams that feed into Bristol Bay, one of Alaska's premier salmon spawning areas. Most people here are adamantly opposed to this, but rather than doing anything to stop the mine, the BLM is actually proposing leasing another 3.6 million acres in this very sensitive and pristine habitat to mining interests. "The proposed Pebble Mine would include the largest dam in the world, larger than Three Gorges Dam in China, and made of earth not concrete, to hold back toxic waste."

I'm on my knees pleading with all of you to sign this petition. This is much more dangerous to Alaska's ecology and environment than ANWR ever thought of being, but for some reason doesn't seem to be getting as much national attention.

4. This Pebble Mine scares the crap out of me honestly...

I can't imagine a worse place to put a mine. It's not that I'm completely against mining -- my brother is in charge of food services at a mine out by Aniak, and I certainly don't begrudge him his job -- but a mine of Pebble's scale in such a delicate area with these insanely huge dams they're talking about is just unthinkable. If they ever collapsed during an earthquake, it wouldn't be just the fish and wildlife in trouble, but all those people out there, too. It's just a crazy project.
