This is the aspect of New Years that cracks me up.

4. Lol! No kidding.
It took me forever to get a key for my locker because there were so many people in line signing up for memberships. It'll slow down in a few weeks. In the meantime, I may have to take a karate class to poise myself to defend *my* elliptical.

just stay away from that shower... you know, the one w/ the best water pressure.... that one is MINE!

16. I don't have a particular treadmill I use - any will do - but stay away from my locker!
I can't stand it when someone else is using "my" locker.

I don't worry about ellipticals. I have a pretty darn nice one at home. :)

23. I am a fatty that runs down the street every day
Screw what other people think. If you are overweight and you are spotted running/working out...at least you are doing something about it.

I would be more embarrassed being fat and eating at the all-you-can-eat than working out.

28. Oh absolutely, that's my thought when I see someone out there
doing something about it. They're much further along than the rest of the majority.

I wanna get back into the minority of Americans again

7. That's what I'm figuring.
If it's that busy at 9:45 in the morning, on a Wednesday, I'd hate to see it in the evening!

13. Our latest exercise routine
I'm glad I'm married to a sensible woman.

For the longest time we've been meaning to exercise more, and we've finally started. A few weeks ago we began a tradition called the "Oyster Walk". There are restaurants in our neighborhood, and we've always talked about walking to them, rather than driving. Well, now we're doing it. Once per week, we walk to a restaurant, and stop in for a dozen oysters and a couple of beers (or wine). Then we walk home. It's about a one mile round trip.

Like I said... sensible!

Now what will we do when oysters are out of season?

15. Work was *brutal* today.
We had so many kids it was crazy. And so many of them were unhappy, too - not having been there in a while, or new to the gym altogether.

It'll slow down again after a couple of months when trial memberships start to expire.

25. We don't have "Trial Memberships" at my athletic club in Philly.
We, however, do have a Membership Review Board. They "check you out" pretty well, indeed.

26. My gym offers memberships of one month, three months, six months....
one year, and two years.

I'm betting that many of the newbies are one-monthers and three-monthers.

I did know one woman who had signed up a two-year membership plus two years' worth of unlimited daycare, came for a few weeks, and never showed up again.

18. The funny thing is
I live in southern Louisiana, and after the Holiday season ends for the rest of the county we go into Maris Gras. No one really stars their "New Year" resolutions until Ash Wednesday. So We get another month and a half to be bad!

19. Arrghh! Gym newbies!!! A big pet peeve!!!
They're okay if they stick around, but I can spot who won't (and it's got nothing to do with weight or appearance). You can see it in their faces - are they really interested, asking questions, trying things out, or are they Going Through the Motions? 95% of them are Going Through the Motions.

Look - here's the deal. You don't want to be here. I don't want you to be here. So let's just both agree (without the pain of you coming in cluttering up the gym in January) that you tried it, it's not your thing. That doesn't make you less of a person. In fact, I so much more respect that you had enough self-awareness not to put us all through the charade.

Come to think of it, 82% of my pet peeves are gym related (the other are supermarket related), including
- people who sit on the aerobic equipment and TALK rather than working out
- grunters
- sweaters who don't clean up after themselves
- the one big guy with long greasy hair who wears a leather cap and a heavy black fisherman's sweater (yes, to work out in) and sits on the equipment READING between reps
- groups of self-conscious high school boys who hog the Smith Press
- guys who do situps while wearing shorts that show off way more than I want to see
- the retired guy who comes in 2-3 times a day, and uses the elliptical every damned time, even at peak hours

The New Year Resolution people better not be playin' on my elliptical tonight or I'm gonna hafta choke a bitch. I'm in JUST that kind of mood!

But my buddies on my health board says the gym is always packed after new years. That also goes for around spring break. I work out at home, so I don't have to worry about it.

24. Please don't begrudge others their attempt at a "Fresh Start"
I've belonged to my Athletic Club in Philly since 1982, we always get a "New Class for the New Year". It's great to see all the New Folks and Faces. Fresh energy.

The great thing is this- if they've got the checkbook it's as much their club as yours, now.

27. Who's begrudging?
I just can't help but chuckle at the stampede. I know what goes through people's minds upon the cusp of a new year (and following the holidays). I'm not mocking them, just amused by the commonality of the "oh shit, I HAVE to get off my ass," sentiment of this time of the year.

With a much more positive attitude.

I should reiterate that just because I look like this

that's not why I get frustrated with the going-though-the-motions crowd

But, SURPRISE, it was just the regulars. I guess 6:00 is too early for the New Years resolution crowd. :D
