What with the deal in Dreamgirls with Jamie Foxx's character?

One minute he was in love with Effie and the next he was in love with Deena with almost no explanation for how or why the change occurred.

Did I miss a scene?

1. I don't think he was ever in love with Effie.

He was attracted to Deena the whole time, but I'm not even sure he really loved her. He was in love with being powerful in the music industry. Effie was okay for a while, but Deena represented exactly what he needed to go mainstream.

2. they seemed to have something real

At least Effie thought so. She sings that song about how much she loves him. It just seemed like, yeah, he saw that Deena would be better for the act, but that he had a preference for the not-so-skinny type. It just never seemed like he had any romantic interest in Deena and then suddenly they are married and he is going on and on about how beautiful she is during the modelling sequence.

3. I think Effie really loved Curtis.

But I think he only loved himself.

(although he seemed touched to see his daughter at the end).
