1. Mmmm...better living through chemicals!
Now the question is, will those chemically created "flavors" make Dr. Pepper taste any different, or will it all end up just like that same, odd, unidentifiable "original" flavor?

:scared:

Glad I hardly ever drink soda these days...scary stuff...

5. Here's something:
Edited on Mon Jan-01-07 02:05 PM by Drum
I wondered about this and checked Wikipedia. My real query is answered in the latter part of this paragraph, and your point is addressed in the earlier part. Enclosing the link just as trivia.

"Unlike Coca-Cola and Pepsi, Dr Pepper is not marketed as a cola. Dr Pepper's flavor is allegedly derived from a mixture of soda fountain flavors popular when the drink was first devised. A partial list of these flavors can be seen at the bottling plant in Dublin, Texas, although the formula itself (with its twenty-three ingredients) is a closely guarded secret. Contrary to a popular urban legend, Dr Pepper does not and never has contained prune juice. <1> In Texas, Dr Pepper is extremely competitive in the soft drink market, regularly outselling Pepsi and Coca-Cola."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Pepper

...Now as for the many "varieties" of Dr. Peppers, they can keep 'em. I like the orig and the diet versions exclusively when I do take soft drinks (rarely.)
And am I alone in thinking that Dr. Pepper tasted differently in the 1970? I recall it as tasting LESS like other sodas, really different, but nowadays not-so-much.

:hi:

15. Dr Pepper was a rare treat for me back then
It wasn't sold anyplace nearby. I think it has changed, the first time I tried the cherry-vanilla flavor I thought, this is what the regular stuff used to taste like.

26. Nope, you're not alone...
The mass market version of Dr. Pepper does taste different from what we got in the 70's. The reason is the same reason Coca Cola went to a new formula in the 80's - they began using cheaper high fructose corn syrup rather than real refined sugar.

Also, aluminum cans were being more often used by the 80's as opposed to the traditional glass bottles. The cans hold more product (~12 fl ounces to the 8 ounces of the bottles), therefore the formula had to be adjusted to accomodate the new sweener and the larger cans... Result - a somewhat different, and to my mind weaker, taste.

If you still want to try the original formula, go the the Dublin, TX Dr. Pepper bottler's web site and you can order them online... In fact, that was one of my Christmas presents! A case of Dulin Dr. Pepper!! :D Very yummy, intense flavor that's so richly sweet that I can barely finish off one bottle...

9. It has always been 23 flavors.
In 1885, a kid created it right here in Waco, Texas using a bunch of different soda fountain flavors.

17. We called that kind of soda a "suicide" when I was growing up
We always had to cut back on the orange because that dominated the taste of the whole mix.

23. Them's fightin' words
Dr. Pepper is a Texas soda, native to Waco and Dublin. We're right proud of it.

That's El Diablo's home state, not Texas. Apologies to all the Lamont DUers...

18. There used to be a similar, but even SWEETER soda in N'Awlins.
It was called Dr. Nutt or Doctor Nutt, I can't visualize the bottle anymore.

You'll still see people down there now and again drinking a glass of Dr Pepper with half-a-dozen maraschino cherries in the glass. They say that's what Dr. Nutt tasted like.
