All right--computer geeks who know Windows XP Home, please help!

I tried to update Windows Media Player to Version 11, or whatever the latest is. It went through, said installation was complete, blah dee da de da. Then it tells me to restart the computer to finalize the update, which I did. So when the PC reboots, I go and click on the WMP icon, and a dialog box comes up that says "To finish installing Windows Media Player, please restart your computer and then log on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group."

Well, there's a problem here. My computer only has one log-on name, which I'll call "X." I have no idea how to log on as anything but "X," because when I go to "Switch Users" or "Log Off," no other option comes up except for "X."

So I Googled "windows XP administrators group," plus searched for it on the computer. It's supposed to exist under Control Panel--Administrative Tools--Computer Management--Local Groups (or some such thing), but under "Computer Management" there is no such submenu! Apparently that only exists on Windows XP Pro, but then why did it come up on my own computer's "Help" menu, when I don't have that?

Arggh! I guess what I want is for someone to either tell me how to log on as an administrator or to somehow "undo" the update on WMP, if that's even possible. Now I'm just afraid I've really fucked my music up, which I have on WMP and which I cannot access until I either undo or finish the installation!

ETA: NEVERMIND. I fixed the whole damn thing through going back to yesterday's system restore point. Didn't lose any files, either. Thank you, LM, for the suggestion. :hug:

click start, then click on control panel, click on "User Accounts" and see if one or more of those items can be changed to help.

14. Just to let you know

If you want to sign on as administrator you log off and then hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and it will bring up a box that you can type in "administrator" as the user. it should be a blank password unless someone changed it.
