All right--computer geeks who know Windows XP Home, please help!
Edited on Fri Dec-29-06 09:38 PM by WritingIsMyReligion
I tried to update Windows Media Player to Version 11, or whatever the latest is. It went through, said installation was complete, blah dee da de da. Then it tells me to restart the computer to finalize the update, which I did. So when the PC reboots, I go and click on the WMP icon, and a dialog box comes up that says "To finish installing Windows Media Player, please restart your computer and then log on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group."

Well, there's a problem here. My computer only has one log-on name, which I'll call "X." I have no idea how to log on as anything but "X," because when I go to "Switch Users" or "Log Off," no other option comes up except for "X."

So I Googled "windows XP administrators group," plus searched for it on the computer. It's supposed to exist under Control Panel--Administrative Tools--Computer Management--Local Groups (or some such thing), but under "Computer Management" there is no such submenu! Apparently that only exists on Windows XP Pro, but then why did it come up on my own computer's "Help" menu, when I don't have that?

Arggh! I guess what I want is for someone to either tell me how to log on as an administrator or to somehow "undo" the update on WMP, if that's even possible. Now I'm just afraid I've really fucked my music up, which I have on WMP and which I cannot access until I either undo or finish the installation!

Help! Please!

TYVVVMIA....

WIMR

ETA: NEVERMIND. I fixed the whole damn thing through going back to yesterday's system restore point. Didn't lose any files, either. Thank you, LM, for the suggestion.

1. Just go Apple because they wash your dishes, blow you,

solve your soduko, keep your breath minty fresh, give you superpowers (!), and never, ever, ever crash, fail, lose data, or need any kind of hardware or software work whatsoever and they last an inifinity amount of time plus one year beyond that. Oh, they don't even need electricity or a connection to the Internet, because apples ARE the Internet. An iMac (blueberry candy cane color) once saved me from a burning bus while a Windows machine just sat around diddling itself with a fractal virus.

2. Have you tried using system restore to go back to yesterday's saved settings?
That might work.

4. Does the PC automatically make saved settings points?
Because I don't think I've manually made one in, well, forever.

6. Can I check sys restore points before doing sys restore?
I want to make sure it's doing that before I really blow the computer all to hell.

7. Yeah, you pick which one to revert to
and you can undo it if it's problematic.

10. Try this...
click start, then click on control panel, click on "User Accounts" and see if one or more of those items can be changed to help.

14. Just to let you know
If you want to sign on as administrator you log off and then hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and it will bring up a box that you can type in "administrator" as the user. it should be a blank password unless someone changed it.
